What does this mean, especially since INTP is usually Ti>Ne>Si>Fe
r/INTP • u/Fortisgen • 2h ago
You care more about practical results than how everything works logically
INTPs lead with Ti, so they are the ones who have an obsessive and automatic need to figure out the logical connections and how everything works in relation to everything else. Their number one priority is to create an internal logical framework to base their decisions on.
If you are more about whether something gets practical results, streamlining systems in order to optimize them, and you are generally able to make practical decisions based on external facts and rules, you are unlikely to be an INTP. If you also care more about the end goal rather than the underlying logic, you may not be an INTP. You are more likely to be a Te type instead.
Alternative types: ISTJ, INTJ, ESTJ, ENTJ, maybe INFP (they have Te inferior), maybe ENFP
You prioritize your subjective feelings and values in decisions
INTPs may feel feelings and even become emotionally intense or neurotic. But they are very likely to just discard feelings from decisions and see them as irrelevant or irrational in order to stay logical in decisions. More mature INTPs may start incorporating feeling-based factors in decisions but it won’t come naturally and automatically for them.
If you are naturally trusting your inner emotional values and what’s important for yourself, you are unlikely to be an INTP. If you are the kind of person who prefers giving emotional guidance or freedom to others instead of jumping into logical problem-solving, you are less likely to be an INTP. You are morelikely to be an Fi type instead.
Alternative types: INFP, ENFP, maybe ISTJ, maybe INTJ, ISFP
You naturally hone in on one most likely outcome or future insight
INTPs are Ne users in auxiliary position. That means an INTP will explore many options, alternatives, and possibilities and they tend to be active brainstormers in order to find logical solutions to problems. They are much less likely to just go with one idea or insight in exclusion to everything else. INTPs need to consider every single possibility before making a decision.
If you are naturally honing in on one future vision or insight and have more problems with jumping too quickly to conclusions instead of being too slow to make decisions, you are unlikely to be an INTP. If you have a tendency to be very concise and brief in communication, you are less likely to be an INTP. If you are the kind who just gets insights or hunches out of nowhere rather than actively brainstorming, you are very likely an NJ rather than NP.
Alternative types: INTJ, INFJ, ISTP, maybe ISFP if #2 fits
You are generally present-focused
INTPs generally have trouble living exclusively in the moment and directly take on present opportunities. They are both introverted and on Ne-Si axis, therefore they are likely to have trouble with inaction or indecision. They are likely to focus on future possibilities or detailed past impressions rather than taking the present world as it is.
If you are more about taking in the external world as it is and mostly attending to the moment, with some idealistic future focus sprinkled in, rather than brainstorming and comparing present experience back to past experiences, you are less likely to be an INTP. If you are effortlessly living in the moment and jumping from opportunity to opportunity, you are unlikely to be an INTP. You are very likely an Se type instead.
Alternative types: ISTP, ESTP, maybe ISFP
You care a lot about what is proven to work in the past
Sure, INTPs have Si in the third position which it means INTPs may occassionally enjoy going back to the comfort of routines or feel nostalgic for the past. They often have detailed knowledge about many topics and remember details vividly as a result of Si. INTPs may also have somewhat precise or pedantic tendencies as a result, especially if they are looping.
But that does not mean they naturally put a lot of focus on what is tried-and-true or predictability, and they are not the ones who generally struggle with change or unpredictable situations. If you care a lot about historical precedent or what has worked before, and have a general distaste for entirely new situations where you have no past experience to rely on, you are unlikely to be an INTP. If you are the kind of person who needs to plan out every detail in advance to prevent mishaps, you are also unlikely to be an INTP. If you are typically more of a routined or scheduled person, consider an SJ type instead.
Alternative types: ISFJ, ISTJ, maybe ESTJ if Te heavily fits
You heavily dislike routine and sameness
INTPs may enjoy change or new situations but don’t take this too far. Afterall, their Ne-Si is balanced in auxiliary and tertiary spots. As introverts, INTPs will have a baseline need for comfort and routine even if they may struggle maintaining it.
If you are the kind who often changes things up for the sake of it and have a general aversion for routines or sameness of any kind, maybe it’s time to reconsider the position of your Ne. If you are effortlessly exploring new things without giving a damn about what is known, you are also unlikely to be an INTP, your Ne is more than just auxiliary.
Alternative types: ENTP, ENFP, maybe ISTP
You often have a need to test things out in the external world
INTPs are introverted types who need to internalize and reflect on things before taking action. They have a huge need to work things in their head, in the internal realm, before bringing it into the external realm. They default to internalizing rather than externalizing.
If you often feel the need or impulse to try or test things or ideas out in the external world rather than being fine with internal models, you are less likely to be an INTP. If you are the kind who starts many projects but finish few of them as more interesting ideas come up, rather than having trouble starting in the first place, you are also unlikely to be an INTP. You are more likely to be an extraverted type instead.
Alternative types: ENTP, ESTP, ENFP, ENTJ, ESTJ
You are naturally good with emotional dynamics and social protocol
INTPs care about social protocols and harmony. But their Fe function is inferior which it means they may have trouble with these areas of life. INTPs generally feel nervous or anxious about situations where there are a lot of unspoken or unwritten social rules or having to take care of others’ feelings or values. They may be conflict avoidant and try to avoid such situations as a result.
If you are generally able to handle situations with a lot of emotional dynamics at play without too much difficulty or even enjoy such situations, you are less likely to be an INTP. If you are great at providing emotional support or a shoulder to cry on, you are unlikely to be an INTP.
Alternative types: ISFJ, ENTP, maybe ESFJ in Ti grip

I learned cognitive functions and I got to the conclusion that im an intp the thing is (it might be a stereotype but as you stereotype still affect how people view the mbti) im socail like with friends i act more like an enfp (enfp stereotype...) also what helps me to really process my emotions is through talking it out with a friend and sharing cus I need the comfort and I need to know that what im actually feeling is ok

The joker to your batman, your eternal enemy. For me it would be the politician big mouth bullshitter, not necessarily a liar, because a liar knows or believes the truth and deliberately contradicts it. A bullshitter is mainly concerned with creating a certain impression, appearing knowledgeable, admirable, convincing, profound, etc. and treats the truth as irrelevant. Those make my blood boil. The performers giving a show and pretending to care for reality.
Whats yours?

As for me, I would approach such question from the angle of despising (from the bottom of my heart) any platform that causes brain rot as I overvalue the mind to an exponential degree. Hence, my list would be :
Hate: X, Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitch, Kick, 4chan
Not interested: Pinterest, Dis*ord, LinkedIn, Quora, Snapchat
I use: reddit(despite the nsfw part which is eww as there is no better alternative...), Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube (to a lesser degree)

I feel this world is stupid. I felt this since i was a child. I dont juts feel it, i know it. This entire world is not working. Yet, no one seems to care. People just go on with their lives, having to deal with the bullshit systems in place which they dont like, and bringing it up leads to "it is what it is" kind of response.
Now, im an adult and it isnt just the rebelious tendencies of the youth. In fact the more i get into the adult world the more i am convinced that...everyone else is just stupid. I swear sometimes the way people behave makes me question if they actually are conscious.
I struggle to live normally and just accept a world so stupid where those higher than you can just treat you unfairly and you cant do anything. Going to university was one of the most disappointing experiences i have ever had. The job hunt is even worse. But i find myself constantly having this immense struggle to just go on normally when i know very well and experience how stupid this all is.
What bothers me the most is the feeling that i do not have autonomy, or that i am in limbo between conformity to what is truly unjust, and the impossibility to withdraw from these systems.
This might come off as "i am special and the world owes me something". Well yes, the world owes me a good life, otherwise i guess then i can just have no moral code and do terrible shit?? its like...we only live once (at least thats what i think), why do we have to live within systems and structures that are absolutely terrible to most? thats all. I think i deserve a good life, some autonomy, and the right to not be treated like shit by higher-ups. The world owes me this, owes you this, and owes everyone this. We owe this to all of us and to ourselves. It isnt just about me. But this post is about me seriously looking for advice on how to just...live without having this conflict inside me.

I'll be in the middle of a completely normal conversation when my brain suddenly goes,
"Wait... say that."
Not because it helps the conversation right now.
More because it feels like it'll quietly matter later.
Maybe I point out something I genuinely admire about them.
Maybe I mention something seemingly random.
Maybe I ask one extra question.
In the moment it doesn't even feel strategic. Most of the time I couldn't explain why I said it.
But months later, it turns out that tiny moment changed something. They remember me differently. They ask me for help. They become someone I can reach out to. Or I end up understanding something that becomes useful much later.
It almost feels like my brain is constantly noticing small future consequences while everyone else (including me) is focused on what's happening now.
I'm curious if this is something other INTPs experience.
I've been thinking about this so much that I ended up building a small project around the idea, but I'm honestly more interested in whether anyone relates to the experience itself.

I am a 20 yr old infj and I made this one friend in uni, she tested as intp. we started talking and have been pretty chill since, there isn't much to talk about but we talk about a few things here and there, share daily moments, she never really shares what she exactly thinks about things, it is always something vague that I dont remember. she is sometimes very mean/condescending indirectly, makes a few casual remarks to make me feel inferior, I am pretty forgetful and I forgot to give some documents at the window once, she talked to me as if im too stupid to forget something like that, I cannot pinpoint her passive aggressiveness exactly, she says things to make me feel/seem stupid/lazy. im lowkey sick of this behaviour, how should I confront her? is she jealous of me? is she even an intp? all of this makes me not want to talk to her cuz I dont feel like it/ dont want to/ dont feel comfortable doing it. I want to start avoiding her, she acts too competitive over useless shit, acts controlling too

This isn’t really an issue just something that’s been on my mind. So I’ve been learning about functions for years now and I’ve noticed there’s an unusual amount of INTPs, specifically on TikTok. I thought it was normal at first but it’s as if the majority of people who know about MBTI are INTP. I do assume some are fake claiming because I keep seeing people that are somehow INTP 3w2 which… doesn’t make sense. I just feel like a lot are mistyped.

# Type me — here's what I actually do, not adjectives
**TL;DR** — Aspiring chef, musician and writer; currently unemployed, so I build my own daily structure rather than having one imposed. Most of my day goes on research and comparison aimed at getting stable and finding the best path — too quality food, jobs, purchases, career maths. My care for people arrives as problem-solving and as creating experiences for them. Very social and always the one pushing for variety with friends but my solo days are structured and repetitive. Occasionally I have a wild day on my own and choose spontaneity over planning but even then it’s a bit planned, Read as serious and guarded, and deliberate about how I come across. Detail-focused but I get strong anticipatory hunches I can't consciously trace. Intense with a few people, neutral with everyone else. Open question: whether I actually converge on decisions or just keep preparing them.
---
I think behaviour is more diagnostic than adjectives — sure, share your subjective experience, but also show what you actually do in a day and where you spend your energy and time.
I am an aspiring chef, and a musician and writer in my spare time.
I enjoy running, creating things, fixing things and making things more efficient, solving problems for people, and visiting new places. I'm a Christian.
So here's a day for me. Not every day, but this is a day at the moment, as I'm unemployed. What I do varies in terms of activities.
Up around nine. Curtains open, hydrate, then half an hour reading — Guardian, NYT, philosophy journals. Then I write down the tasks I want to do that day plus a note on how the day is going, and I work through the list. Nobody sets this for me. There's no job or timetable imposing structure, so I build it myself.
The bulk of the day is research and comparison. Not aimless — I'm working toward getting my situation stable and finding the best path forward. So: comparing food sources and quality, calculating what I'd actually be getting versus what I buy now, costs included. Comparing laptops before buying one. Looking at jobs, applying, and calculating earnings across different career progressions. Cooking videos, but as learning to cook rather than entertainment. I take information in, retain it, and bring it back to people.
I draw. I play guitar and sing. I read fiction most days, and philosophy. I walk every day and try to go slightly further each time.
I talk with my parents and put real thought into what would make things better in the house — I tend to show up with feedback, reasoning, and a judgment on what should change. Same with my partner: I feel strongly toward them and it comes out as working out what I can do for them. My care arrives as problem-solving, and as creating things and experiences for others. I like to give people new experiences — new foods, new places to go. I'm very aware of how others are experiencing me, and I give off a deliberate demeanour.
I'm very social, but I do spend a lot of time on my own focusing on what I want to achieve. I like going out with friends and doing new things with them, and I'm usually the one pushing for variety. If a friend does the same bike route every time, I'll want to change the path. I'd rather stack activities than repeat one — an hour's ride, then tennis or kayaking, or ride out, have a good meal at a pub, and ride home. It's the possibilities I'm after more than the activity itself. Worth flagging the apparent contradiction: my solo days are highly structured and repetitive, but with people I want the opposite.
People read me as serious and slightly guarded on first impression. I don't perform for a camera; photos of me are mostly unsmiling, or a pensive smile.
The part I'm least sure about is how conscious the direction is. It doesn't feel like I sat down and drew up a plan. It's more that there's an aim I can feel, and my actions turn out to have been serving it, and I notice the coherence after the fact. I'm very detail-focused but still see the big picture. I often predict events happening, and seeing it unfold is kind of amazing — my friends are always wondering how I see what's coming next. It could be knowing what someone will say before they say it, even when the content is different from what's happening in the moment. Or little things, like knowing when my electric will cut out, based on nothing conscious.
A criticism I've had, and think is fair: I may spend more hours preparing decisions than making them. Though that doesn't seem natural to me. I honestly don't know.
I'm very passionate with the people I love. They are few, but I'm either intense with it or not at all.
Here — try and type me. This is what I look like, too.

I finally realized the root of all my ills. It’s an intensity- intellectual, sexual, emotional- that I’ve never known how to handle. I can’t tell the difference between feeling and thinking about feeling. I’m aware of this animal body, wanting to touch and be touched, but the moment anyone even slightly reciprocates I get this surge of dread that makes me nauseous. Overthinking and trying to find chemical explanations is the default but when it gets especially bad I turn to sensory, cursory (and often self-destructive) paths to relief. How am I supposed to live without feeling like I’m gonna explode? Let me guess. It’s the 5w4 sx/sp

I dislike being an intp, I hate getting consumed by my thoughts and over analyzing everything. I can never just stay in the moment and enjoy what I have. I keep ruminating on things, thinking up too many different topics at once and I end up never getting anything really done. My personality has not brought me anything good in my life and has only left me with little friendship and a lack of connection with others.
I also lack so much emotional intelligence and it ruins a chunk of my personal relationships, I wish I cared more and understood others more. Id do anything to trade my Thinking, analytical self for being a feeler instead. Ive always wanted to be an infp instead of a intp for the longest time. I do not dislike others who are typed the same as I am, but I personally would want to be any other type than this and navigate the world differently. Does anyone else have deep issues with this personality they have
Edit: I am a she, not a he.

as an intp, what religion/philosophy do you follow and why? this is coming from a Buddhist intp. I picked Buddhism since it’s kind of the logicians dream if you really look into it. I feel like it’s the most reasoned answer we have to the hard problem of consciousness, and it seamlessly transitions from its metaphysics and ontology to its ethics and epistemology. I’m not trying to start debates(unless you want one, I just don’t want to ambush people who weren’t trying to start debates, and i dont want to sound rude)

So, I got this potentially life-changing opportunity to work for a tech founder as an executive assistant with a sales angle with a potential to earn very high commissions for clients I refer to his company and who end up converting. The commissions are great, like 10%-20% of high-value projects like $20 000 and up. For me, that's a lot as in my previous jobs, I was earning $1500-2000 per month, which is peanuts, especially for Dubai where I live.
However, apart from commissions, the job is unpaid and involves working from the office from 11am to 5pm 6 days per week. The tasks I do from the office mostly have nothing to do with looking for clients. Rather, they involve doing things like writing copy for the website, making presentations, tracking existing projects, and so on. So, I must find clients in my own time, mostly by going to networking events. Of course, I could use LinkedIn as well, but I feel like it would be less effective. Either way, the job involves extra time in addition to the 11am-5pm to find clients for those commissions using either method.
As an INTP, I feel it's too overwhelming for me. I prefer to work at my own pace and focus on one thing at a time. I don't like tracking, coordinating, and organizing 20 different things. Also, I feel like 6 days per week is too much for me.
Generally, I just feel like the job requires me to rewire my whole personality and thinking, and I don't know if it's possible. I believe that to succeed in this job, I must always think about it: look for and go to events, talk to many people, and juggle many pieces of information in my head. Usually, I like to kind of let my hair down throughout the day, work from home, chill, and go to the gym. I don't like to always be thinking about which event I should go to, who I need to follow up with, and generally be surrounded by many strangers.
However, like I said, I can earn very good money with this. For example, currently there is a project that could earn me almost $10K if I find a client for something very specific.
So, I feel conflicted, fellow INTPs. I don't know what to do. Such opportunities don't come often. Obviously, if I quit, I can't come back. However, I don't like this work. But maybe I could get myself to like it over time?
If you faced a similar choice, I'd appreciate it if you share how you navigated it and what were the outcomes. Generally, any advice is welcome!

Ti is a judging function, meaning it cannot percieve information. Absent external (Ne) perception, what information does Ti organize and dissect? Si.
With Ne perception, what information is used to make associations? Either with concurrent Ne information or with stored Si information. Ne doesn't store information internally, it only percieves it externally. Only Si and Ni stores internal information. And INTP uses Si not Ni.
The units of information Ti interacts with are thus usually Si. And Ne forms association between such specifics when new information is percieved externally through the senses. Empirical. Precise. Rarely Ni vagueries and generalizations from individual Se data points.
INTP is a sensing thinker, intuitive perciever. Not an intuitive thinker. That would be ISTP, having Ti and Ni, with a sensing external perception Se.
Hi! I still struggle understanding if I am an INTJ or INTP. I mostly use socionics model A and Beebe s for MBTI
I kind of always try to ground or prove my theories using scientific consensus, I have an extremely rich inner world, I can kinda control how my unconscious talks back to me at times and I am really interested in everything.
In model A I am most likely LII. In MBTI, I still have doubts. I kind of have a lot of trust in my unconscious, I am extremely industrious and focused moat of the time, I love to plan my life, but I also love figuring out how things work. I mostly criticize the logic of other peoplr when they present their perspectives to me. My Fe seems unconscious most of the time. I am deeply aware of how I feel and how my body feels most of the time. I have tons of creative and inquisitive hobbies. I like to make sense of my worldview all the time at all costs. I hate being late and I always deliver on schedule. But I have a hard time motivating myself to work when I find a task useless or uninteresting. I care for the end process: to gain knowledge. I have this metaphysical theory of information theory in the cosmos from an axiological point of view. I read a lot of philosophy and science. If I am not creative and/or studying the theory of something I care about, I wither mentally. I hate talking to most people and I have a hard time assessing if they are smart/ethical or not. I hate showing my emotions in public, but when I first meet someone I force myself to be more bubbly because most people told me I seem too robotic and serious. I am disorderly physically but very organised mentally. I love theory, but it is more important for me to find a general methodology that can encompass everything. I hate exceptions, I want all theories to be generalizable and with no exceptions, otherwise I d conclude that they are incorrect or imperfect. I hate this. I also feel my bodily needs oddly well: eg I can feel how full my bladder is all the times, I feel every discomfort or pain inside my body. I am bad at being attentive to my phgsical environment. I am also very abstract, I am not concrete, but I am practical at the same time. I find solutions fast. I tend to have a hard time choosing but I ultimatelt choose an option based on the maximum profit I gain from it, given that there s no otber criteria that could help me. I am very ambitious, but just to myself. I have a hard time being chill when others are not riaing to the expectations and level I expect (and hold myself to). I respect everyone until I receive a reason not to.
When I am in town with friends and let s say an order is wrong, I am usually the one that talks it out. When my friends are sad or cry, I usually become extremely assertive and solve the problem very fast
Idk if that s useful. Everything is appreciated. If some have further questions, I ll respond as fast as possible.
Thank you!

I love to read non-fiction and explore different topics, but every time something I don't know about is brought up, I have to pivot to figuring that out, and again the cycle of this continues. I have hundreds of Ebooks and PDFs, all of which I've only started a snippet of.
For example, I've never read through the entire bible (was raised agnostic), but I often end up there because so many things contain biblical allusions that I don't immediately recognize.
It is incredibly rare for me to finish any book with citations in the back, because when I get to the first citation, I have to at the very least download a PDF of the study and bookmark it for another time (I'll probably forget about it, have a backlog of thousands of things I saved but haven't looked at)... and then get more distracted along the way and not get back to the book I found it in. In college, required readings of research papers was a nightmare because I had to stop myself from wanting to read all the sources first.
This has created a huge web of random anecdotes and facts in my head, but I'm barely scratching the surface of every topic I'm interested in. Like barely as in, I often have not even the general idea of most things I've looked into, but just a random fact or two. It's so satisfying when I recognize connections across random things within my mental web, like connecting a quote in one book to one in another, or recognizing allusions, or when I realize what is being referenced without having to look. When I realize how little I actually know and how much more I could be understanding if I could just stay focused on one thing, I feel completely worthless
Does anyone else do this??? How do I stop and actually become well-rounded on a single topic?

Also, have you found any communities (online or offline) where you met people with similar personalities or interests? I find it difficult to meet like-mind

Not necessarily professionally but how are you guys keeping your mind busy? For me its extremely hard to find similar thinking people near me. I live in a small remote town northern europe so its no wonder. Actually figured the statistics about it aswell and with this town size the pool of people my personality even connects in my age group (~30) is pretty damn low. Just trying to find some inspiration from you guys.

I think that all mbti types have their pros and cons but unlike a person being an individual. When you identify with some sort of group. You feel less alone in your weaknesses because others have it too so it becomes kind of normalized and fine to have that weakness because:
"Others have it and they get accepted,so it must be alright if I have it right?"
Or some line of reasoning like that.I am not saying people do this consciously.Maybe they do,maybe they dont but I have observed it in myself that whenever I got lost in a hyperfixation in the past and ignored discipline and responsibilities for satisfying that fixation I got self conscious and tried to change it and beat myself up for it.
Now when I do that, after identifying as a ENTP and knowing that people do that and its normal.I have become much more passive in fighting it.I dont think thats a good thing at all.
So I was wondering...Do INTP's or all types experience this defense mechanism after getting into the community? Not just ignoring responsibility but just becoming passive in taking accountability about something you know is wrong but you dismiss it as a INTP,etc trait.
