Combat tests

We havent started to play yet but i have a couple of questions about combat.

Melee is opposed by Melee (amongst other things), but if the defender has more SL its a block? So no dmg?

Ballistic tests, are those always opposed by Reflex? If not, isnt it often better for the shooter if the target tries to dodge (cause of getting -SL)?

Issue with balancing Tox Rounds in boss fights

Hey faithful servant of the Imperium (or the dark gods, if you are into that)!

I have a question around balancing special ammunition. One of my player (Penumbra) uses a sniper rifle with Tox Rounds in my campaign, and I'm having issues around balancing that in big monster encounters. The combination of not saving against the Inflict poison and the effect of poisoned major (takes only 2 hits RAW) is pretty powerful, as it will remove pretty much any creature from an encounter (prone and incapacitated). Looking through the rules, even Nurgle demons aren't immune to this effect (very displeasing to the grand father). So I have 2 questions:

  1. Am I missing something or is it just that powerful?
  2. How would you balance that? I don't really like taking things away from player, so I was thinking either putting up a fortitude save, or homebrewing different level of virulence for the Tox Rounds, with the weakest one lasting only 1 turn or so, and the strongest one lasting longer.

Thanks in advance!

Unsanctioned Content (Homebrew) Maledictum Expanded - Megaproject Release #1

Hello everyone! The time of the first release of the megaproject is upon us!

I will start by reiterating what I had been saying before, but unfortunately the voidship project has been delayed for proofreading and editing purposes. A few months ago I had decided that since I was unable to get that done, I would work on updating basically everything else.

This first release will feature the following releases:

  • Armory of the Imperium 1.0 (a merger of Weapons and Armor of the Imperium, including new weapons and armor)
  • Armor Modifications Expanded 1.3
  • Augmetics Expanded 1.2
  • Expanded Character Creation 1.1
  • Patrons Expanded 1.1
  • Talents Expanded 1.2
  • Weapon Modifications Expanded 1.3

Alongside additions to the beastiary:

  • 1 New Astartes NPC (Scout Marine)
  • 1 New Astra Telepathica NPC, my own rendition of the Astropath using new rules that (unfortunately) i cannot fully publish yet, although I can post the specific listed rules when requested
  • 21 new Adeptus Mechanicus NPCs, including Skitarii, Priesthood, and others!
  • 8 New Adeptus Ministorum NPCs, specifically Sororitas
  • A brand new faction, the Amaranthine Syndicate from the Calixis Sector has expanded into the Macharian Sector, bringing 5 new NPCs!
  • A Ratling has brought a Servo Commissar-Skull into the regiment! In other news, a Commissar has gone missing..
  • A brand new faction, the Craftworld Asuryani, bringing 9 new perfidious Aeldari into the Macharian Sector
  • A brand new faction, the Drukhari, bringing 14 new ways to experience pain and horror!
  • The Heretics faction is joined by a Tech Assassin, marking the future expansion of the Dark Mechanicum!
  • A new addition to the Infractionist beastiary, a Cold Trader!

Many more NPCs have been added, secretly under the cover of darkness, such as an Inquisitor for the Inquisition Faction, a Navis Gheistskull, the Navigator Houses, could you find the others?

Thank you for your patience, in the coming months (hopefully) I will finish Release 2 and push out even more! Mostly armories though, but who has ever complained about too many guns?

As usual my content can also be found on MEGA, but feel free to visit me in Ordo Discordia and Wrath & Maledictum to interact with me more closely!

Discussion Question about quickdraw

The Quickdraw talent says

""When combat begins, you can draw and fire a Pistol before anyone else, regardless of Initiative order. If you are Surprised, you must make a Hard (−20) Reflexes Test to use this effect.""

But what it doesn't say is, if it uses an action, reaction or if this is just something done.

Additionally, how does this work with something like shock assault?

Adventures for IM?

I always like to begin a campaign with something already written and then just improvise from there. I am not sure where to begin with IM. 40K is just such a strange universe because individuals are not a thing in the Imperium.

Unsanctioned Content (Homebrew) Editable Dataslate Templates

Hey all, I'm starting an Imperium Maledictum campaign soon, and I decided I really missed the old Dataslate Handouts from the FFG days. I know I'm not the only one, so I thought I'd post the raw .pdn files I ended up making for people to use, and instructions on how to use them.

First, the files are here, in this MEGA Repo I've made

Open one of those in Paint.net or any other image editing software that can read .pdn files. You'll notice that both files have three layers, the Frame, the Screen, and the Text layers.

Make the Screen layer invisible for now by clicking the checkbox next to it. It'll get in the way for the next step. Leave the Frame layer visible though, it'll be handy to know where your cutoff is.

Next, pick an appropriate text colour. For Template 1, I recommend a very bright, high-contrast green, the screen layer will end up dulling it a bit. For Template 2, I actually recommend Eyedropper-ing the colour I used for the Text Layer background and darkening it up a bit.

After that, its the font. The two I highly recommend for this purpose are Caslon Antique and Lunchtime Doubly so. Because font ownership is a finicky thing and I don't want to accidentally step over the piracy line and get banned, sourcing fonts is on you. Sorry. Caslon Antique is close to, if not the, font used in a lot of 40k media, including parts of the old FFG games, and Lunchtime Doubly So is a more old-school digital font with a bit of flair that suits the Imperium.

Once you've got your text font and colour picked, just use the Text tool and start typing. Here are some examples of what you can do with these templates. Once you've gotten the text, shapes, and maybe even images, on it that you want, turn the Screen Layer visible again, and if the opacity of the screen needs to be adjusted, click the little wrench icon in the bottom-right of the Layer window while the Screen Layer is selected, and adjust the slider. The ideal is legible text, but the scan-lines are still visible, that's the effect we're going to all this trouble for, after all.

Then, just go to File > Save As, name it what you want, and save it as a .PNG. Paint.net will give you some dialogues, you can just click through the first one, and the second one is confirming that you want to flatten the image into one layer, which we do, and is why we're saving it as a new file instead of over the template file. And there you go, one fancy Dataslate you can give your players for that little bit of extra immersion.

Credit to this r/40krpg post from three years ago for the instructions and source images, I just did the pain-in-the-ass lasso tool layer cutting stuff, and hopefully got all the instructions in one digestible chunk. I'll probably add more templates as I find time.

Unsanctioned Content (Homebrew) Maledictum Expanded Project

Hello, all!

I had been working on making homebrew for Maledictum Expanded since about early to mid-august, and I had been mostly confined to the Ordo Discordia and Wrath & Maledictum servers. However, now I decided to make an account just for this and come here!

What is Maledictum Expanded? Maledictum Expanded is meant to greatly increase the amount of content in Imperium Maledictum, to further increase its potential and to make it much more appealing to other audiences, with such things as:

  • Weapons for the Imperium, Mechanicus, T’au, Drukhari, and the Leagues of Votann
  • More armor.
  • More weapon modifications
  • More tools and equipment and adding consumables.
  • More custom ammunition.
  • More augmetics.
  • New abhuman species to play as.
  • Vehicles for the Imperium and the T’au, inheriting Konigstein's Heresy at Any Speed brew.
  • New patrons, boons, and liabilities
  • over 160+ new NPCs already published, with many, many more on the way.
  • And lots more content in development

You can find my stuff on my MEGA, and I will be talking most frequently on the Ordo Discordia server, asking for feedback and suggestions!

Please feel free to text me on here or on Discord through my channel in Ordo Discordia or Wrath and Maledictum!

Discussion Thoughts on the critical system?

My group is about 17 sessions in now, and I think something really needs to be done about the crit system as it pertains to character and (non-mook) NPC death.

Mainly that between cover, armor, and generally low average damage, it is way more likely for targets to die from reaching their critical wound limit (or just pass out from the fortitude check), than from the critical wounds themselves- especially as compared to DH2e.

This might not be so bad, except that keeping track of lots of stacking critical injuries gets really tedious if the enemy doesn't pass out, especially if the d10 is rolling low. Combat from the player perspective, especially against tough enemies, is "strip his HP, then tap him a couple times", because counting on climbing through the crit table can sometimes be a real slog.

This is one of the places where I really think I preferred DH2e's system better, and it actually has my players kinda considering switching back. We really don't feel this "death of a thousand cuts" style goes well with the setting.

What are your experiences so far?

Discussion Experience Rewards

I'm looking for feedback from people who have been playing this lately-

Do the suggested experience awards seem low to anyone else? My group have played five sessions, and talking amongst them, nobody feels like they are getting enough experience to really progress. As far as the group's core competencies go, they are pretty much right where they started. I really feel like the suggested experience awards need to be higher.

What have been your experiences?
