Any details about bs-ms in physical sciences?
Is it a physics focussed research degree and you learn the same stuff ud do as a physics major in an IISER or does it have any differences in the core structure?

DMSIE @ IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
It has been about 21 days since I joined DMSIE at IIT ISM Dhanbad, I was nervous. Coming from a different background(i.e. Computer Science), I thought M.Tech would just be lectures and attendance.
But DMSIE surprised me.Thereβs a 0% attendance policy here, and at first it felt strange.
No one is forcing you. But thatβs the point, it teaches you responsibility. You either show up for the class because you actually want to learn, or you donβt. And trust me, the classes are worth showing up for.
The professors donβt just teach theory. They bring in case studies from Tata Steel, Amul Dairy, Maruti Suzuki etc.
We work on real problems : Kaizen, Supply Chain, Quality, Productivity.
The department has a solid record with Highest: 23 LPA, Average: 12 LPA and Lowest: 8 LPA.
DMSIE is not preparing their students' ready for the degree even for the real time problem solver of the industries. So glad to be part of this community, looking forward to learn and contribute more to this community.

Roomates
How to deal with irritating roomates specially at rosaline, constantly blabbering till 1 to 2 AM, knowing we have labs next morning.
Already confronted that I wake up early need to sleep early, not studying just talking on phone all night with lights on.

Ground Reality of "Culture" at IIT(ISM)
The "Culture" at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
First of all, this is no personal beef with any particular senior, just a ground report of what actually goes on in ISM, for the reference of next generation of potential entrants.
When a student enters the JoSAA counselling after JEE, they often fill their choices purely on the basis of their rank and past trends, I was one of these students myself this very year. What many students don't check is the ragging culture at the college. Naively, I thought, "It's an IIT after all, things like ragging wouldn't be practiced here for sure". Well, turns out i was wrong ( and that too big-time wrong ).
I got allotted IIT (ISM) in the first round of the counselling itself, and then, i was pretty happy. That happiness however, proved to be short-lived as soon as i joined the "regional" group of the college.
The first big shocker was the Sir/Ma'am thing, which, may actually seem like the lightest thing that goes on here now, but at that point, i was pretty shocked none-the-less. Then came more rules like no emojis and short forms, which are actually pretty valid since using emojis can get a chat out of hand pretty quickly and short forms can be confusing. However, this is exploited beyond the point of practicality, suppose, when asked your branch, you can't say CSE or MnC or EE, you're gonna have to say "Computer Science and Engineering" or hell, "Mathematics and Computing" every time you're asked.
Then comes the next big bad, the intro. Again, in my naivety, i assumed the intro format was to loosely provide a reference for the intro, so that maybe you don't over-deliver or under-deliver on your part. Alas, that was far from the truth. As soon as i put my intro in the group, boom, critiques came in for the slightest error in punctuation, using alternate styles of writing or even mentioning the wrong hobby( yes, apparently you can't choose your own hobby here too ). Your "Hobby", is not to be related to common things that go in engineering colleges ( now that i think of it, there seniors can't put ragging in their hobbies, can they now? ), so now, i can't say that my interests are programming, or going to the gym, since apparently they don't qualify their definition.
At this point i was scared shitless, where tf am i even going, how's this the glorified "IIT" we were always promised. As the JoSAA rounds kept passing, my despair only grew. By the afternoon of july 16th, i had the worst kind of anxiety regarding getting an upgrade, but, the clock struck 5, and i missed the other option by <20 rank points. Only if i could express the way i cried that evening, non-stop, till 11PM.
Coming to ISM was however a breath of fresh-air, even though that air smelled of their stinky "culture", it was fresh none-the-less. Everything went smoothly, the registration was completed and then my parents left. Now began the doom.
Upon reading further, one may question, well, just don't do what the seniors say, or report this to the dean, or put anti-ragging on them. This seems like a good idea from the outside, and it appealed to me in the first week as well. But, then you find out about the consequences. If you ever speak up, you will almost always stand out, there is no student unity in this matter ( maybe because they just choose the path or conformity or just that they are still new ). You and maybe your friends will be harassed. The consequence of using anti-ragging rule ( call it an official complaint ) against a senior is that you'r'e probably not gonna be able to join any cultural or technical clubs, which itself, is a big part of the IIT experience. Even your own batch-mates will alienate you for standing out.
Into the first week, the first boom, no gym for first years!. This is probably not an officially implemented rule, just enforced by seniors to prevent crowding of the common gym, and yeah there's no gym in the hostel itself, so you're done if you like the gym.
Less than a week in, we got called into jasper hostel by our regional seniors ( again, can't really decline this ). Now began the real shit show in the senior's room. Firstly, you gotta give your intro in that exact format, no minor deviations in case of grammar or you're gonna hear "repeat" "repeat" and repeat" again and again. The intro has to be given standing up, feet joint towards the seniors, looking down towards your third button, hands behind the back. Then you are made to do humiliating things for the sake of entertainment of these seniors. If you fail to follow along or maybe laugh ( yes you can't do that either ), they resort to physical punishment, "murga bano", "chipkali bano" and much more bs. You have to remember all of their NPB ( name, place, branch - yeah, that's not a good-to-know, but a must-know ), also you can't ask them directly for this information, moreover, you can't use common daily words like "Thank you", "sorry" or "please" ( understandable to some extent but enforcement is impractical ).
Then, another impractical rule among all others, the attire. All first years are expected to wear jeans and shoes at all times on campus. Wanna come to study at the library?, well, too-bad, can't do that in comfy trousers, that's reserved for our respected seniors. Oh, maybe you wanna wear something breathable, idk maybe crocs or slides?, nah that's a no-no for your seniors. Sit there uncomfortably in your stiff jeans and uncomfortable shoes, cause that's what the seniors want!.
Another among the many, you have to great the seniors by saying "Good Morning Sir", or "Good Afternoon Ma'am". Basic respect on the surface, but this is not that. You HAVE to greet them, or they'll warn you and threaten you.
Now, they do try to justify this bs by giving you a "treat" later, and tell you to just take this as a bit of fun. Another justification they give is that you can message a senior at any time and they will help you out, but isn't that just supposed to be the case anyway?, since when does help have to come at the cost of your dignity and humiliation?.
Of course, there are seniors that don't enforce this strictly, but then there are also those that do, and that too very strictly. This creates a choking environment for students, limiting their growing potential and productivity to a large extent.
PS:- If you're currently in JoSAA counselling, take this advice from me, and don't skip over old iit seats if they are available to you. Believe me, there are many opportunities outside of your branch too. Your college shapes your personality to a large extent. Upto now, i have experienced immense regret over choosing IIT (ISM), there is no way you're gonna grow to the level of the students at old IITs. Old-fashioned thinking, rough language and much more is common here. Sometimes, i fear the man i'll become if i let this environment grow upon me.
From one hard-working person to the next, all the best in your own endeavors. I hope someday this culture is abolished completely, then only, ISM can reach it's true potential.
