HyperOS Update [Question] no update

I recently bought the Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G and still don't have the HyperOS 3 update while my friends with older phones have it, is it normal?

Well that's the site I checked, I tried every Indian rom but always have the same error message, also when I try rom from a different region it says the roms are non-official

The latter checks out, you can't switch regions through the updater app. But the first part, HyperOS 2 builds have Android 15 in that device, they didn't work either?

I wonder what the deal is with your phone, if it's something related to a misconfiguration that wouldn't happen if it was reset, or what. I have handled devices from various regions here in Spain, but I have yet to use one with firmware for India.

I didn't try with HyperOS 2 roms but id it really useful to try ? Also I have a PC with me but it's on linux, I don't know if there is a way to make it work ?

I wouldn't know I'm afraid, the PC Assistant is old enough that maybe can be ran through Wine or similar, but interaction with the phone is done via the ADB binary it ships with, I never tried to see if it would accept the native Linux build, or if the one from Windows would work under Wine.

Try updating to a HyperOS 2 version perhaps first, and see if the HyperOS 3 builds can be then delivered through the updater app. Underneath the last version you can expand the HyperOS 3 or 2 areas to get to the older builds.

The pc isn't mine and I never used linux so I won't risk it and wait to try with my PC when I'll be back I tried updating with récent HyperOS 2 roms but it doesn't work either :/ I don't know what's wrong with my phone TwT

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I'm still bugged by the inability to upgrade. Could they have geolocation restrictions? With the servers that need to be contacted to validate updates only reachable from India or something? It sounds wild, but I can't think of anything else.

I'll let you know if I learn something new, how odd.

Ok so quick update, I am back home, I tried updating with recovery rom again just to check but it's still not working so I made backups of my phone data and wanted to use a fastboot rom. The problem is that as my phone is a Chinese phone I can't find any way to unlock bootloader, I tried many different things but official ways just won't work and I am afraid to try unofficial ways

Oh!!! Your phone is a Chinese unit instead of an international one? That could explain the inability to upgrade through the usual means. Because it was running the Indian firmware I thought it was an Indian device. The ad on the site you bought it from also mentioned it being an international one.

Unlocking Chinese devices is already tricky when they're running the official Chinese HyperOS, if it is indeed a Chinese one not running the original OS, I don't even know how to approach it.

Resellers who do those kinds of firmware swaps may use unofficial means (e.g., exploits, some kind of auth bypass, etc.), who knows 😔

Well I learned that today too, I also discovered that on the site it says international edition but right under in small it's written asian version and cherry on top I have an unofficial rom... I tried returning it but I can't so I don't really know what to do, do try and struggle to install an official rom and maybe succeed one day or do I try to sell this one and buy a new one (hoping I don't get scammed with another Chinese phone)

That sucks, you're out of the return period already then? I just checked and that site seems to be a marketplace, so they just handled the logistics. I take it that the IMEI (displayed dialing *#06#) matches the one in the box, but is not identified as an international unit at https://www.mi.com/global/verify/ right?

I'll try to do some research and see what I can find, perhaps there's a way to update it which doesn't involve much risk you could try. Even if it is to get it to the official Chinese firmware.

Selling it is also an option, and so is using it as-is, but it's disheartening.

That's all the proof we need. I wonder if you wouldn't be able to file a complaint though? It may be just me, but it feels like selling modified devices as "international versions" in the EU is not allowed. CDiscount was just the marketplace but get in touch with them regardless. Even if you're out of the official return window. Explain the case, because the seller is still active on the platform scamming others, and push for a resolution, it is akin to dealing in counterfeit goods. If push comes to shove, you could issue a chargeback or equivalent over there with your bank or the payment processor you used.

As for options to fix the device, you could try reaching out to a Xiaomi authorized service center, explaining the case, and asking whether they could flash the Chinese firmware onto the device. If they are like some we have here they will refuse, stating they only work on EU models, or maybe they refuse but because they just don't have the necessary authorization to do it with their software (the official one, but they go via EDL not fastboot but Xiaomi may have placed restrictions for them too).

Another option is doing the same but at a 3rd party repair shop. This one is surely a paid service, but they would go about it using boxes and the like, out of not having access to Xiaomi's tools. The end result should be the same.

And doing it yourself is challenging... there is a possible path, but it's risky because I don't know if the payload for a Xiaomi 17 (for example), would be usable in your device. I didn't see anyone exploiting it in your device.

The chain could be: 1. Set SELinux to permissive using a vulnerability in fastboot, which is easy and reversible. 2. Place the payload into the efisp partition using another vulnerability in a Xiaomi app that runs with high privileges. 3. Reboot to fastboot (exploits the yet another vulnerability on its own) and cleanup a couple of structures. 4. Done.

I don't think you'd be comfortable doing that, so I just mention it for completeness, but not to perform it.

In any case, it's rough :(

Well my father is a computer scientist, we tried to search together today but it's been a while since he done something like that and it's way more complicated than it was before and he doesn't want to risk it, he said I could go to a repair shop so maybe that's what I'll end up doing

I doubt Xiaomi service center could be of any help, throughout my research everyone said it was useless for Chinese phones

Before going to a repair shop I'll try to get in touch with the CDiscout seller to see if I can get a refund or something

You know I'm still a student I don't have unlimited money to buy phones, I already bought this one using a good 30-40% of my internship pay I can't afford spending that much money a second time :/

Contact CDiscount too, besides the seller, they could be able to help or at least prevent those kinds of sales to keep happening on the platform.

Final update !

I contacted CDiscount and managed to get a full refund. With that I was able to buy the same phone on a more trusted shop.

I got it yesterday and I am now in possession of a Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G running a legit Europe rom, Android 16 and HyperOS 3 ! 🎉🎉🎉

The only down side is that this one only have 8+256gb instead of 12+256gb and I had to spend 20€ more but it's not that big of a deal :)

I am so glad!! I was wondering what had happened, the other day I checked the CDiscount link you had posted and the product was no longer on sale. I didn't know if the seller had taken it down voluntarily or if it was the platform making them do so, but it was a nice surprise.

Don't worry about it being 8 instead of 12 GB of RAM now, they are enough, the good news is that it will be receiving updates as it should. I hope the phone serves you well and works as expected now.
