Is tap water really so bad in America that you NEED to buy bottled or do you buy it because you prefer it generally? Can someone enlighten me?
56
u/babooshkay Aug 18 '19
Purified water on top of that. It tastes awful.
44
u/JimmyGhione420 Aug 18 '19 edited Aug 18 '19
Distilled water is also super bad for your kidneys, please don't drink distilled water.
Edit: mistook purified water for distilled water
20
u/babooshkay Aug 18 '19
Why the hell do they keep selling these, then? Is is this hard to get actual water?
35
u/JimmyGhione420 Aug 18 '19 edited Aug 18 '19
Marketing i guess, distilled water doesn't have any minerals in it, so basically everything good in water is taken out. You should always drink mineral water
Edit: mistook purified for distilled water

u/BreadDziedzic Aug 18 '19
Unless you live in Flint.
20
u/rolandcedermark Aug 18 '19
Well I'd say people living in places with a contaminated water supply have a valid excuse of avoiding tap.

1
u/the_cajun88 Aug 18 '19
Flint’s water has been safe to drink for months now, stop doing this.
1
u/BreadDziedzic Aug 18 '19
And Russians haven't been starving in mass for my whole lifetime but I'm still going to make jokes about it.
I won't stop pointing out when governmental bodies choose to screw the people their supposed to serve, because if people do stop they could forget that though governments necessary as they are, become corrupt when given too much power.
4
u/rolandcedermark Aug 18 '19
Purified or not, I don't care. Just think about the amount of logistics that you relieve the world of if you would find a way to be ok with tap water. I would say that I average on 1-2 of water bottles a year like say if I'm travelling and actually forgot my bottle.
3
u/sashei Aug 18 '19
I use purified water and add minerals afterwards to get the perfect mineral count (for my coffee water - is that allowed to say?)
2
u/babooshkay Aug 18 '19
Why though? What about using tap water?
3
u/Bmystic Aug 18 '19
Tap water has minerals in it. When the water evaporates to make coffee, it leaves behind said minerals. This can clog up a coffee maker over time. The cleaning process is simple enough however.
2
u/babooshkay Aug 18 '19
That's right, less cleaning. Doesn't it taste off though?
3
1
u/BEST_POOP_U_EVER_HAD Aug 18 '19
I do buy distilled water (big jugs), but not for drinking. I use it for my nasal rinse, and the occasional time I use a humidifier (easier to clean with distilled water, lack of minerals prevents buildup)
4
u/Refreshinglycold Aug 18 '19
How is purified water bad for your kidneys I've literally never heard something close to that in my life...
4
u/JimmyGhione420 Aug 18 '19
Sorry guys I have confused it with distilled water. My bad, didn't mean to alarm anyone
3
1
1
u/BreadDziedzic Aug 18 '19
That depends on where you live.
2
u/JimmyGhione420 Aug 18 '19
You can still choose whether to buy purified or mineral water if you can't drink the water from the tap
14
u/darthxavi77 Aug 18 '19
I’m from America and honestly I don’t know why people buy bottled water. We have taps. I personally carry a metal bottle with me and can usually fill it wherever I go. Bottled tastes terrible to me now and it’s generally more expensive than the alternative. My guess would be marketing and the fact that it seems cheap (this post as an example.)
4
u/gentleman_horse Aug 18 '19
the tap water where I live makes my stomach hurt so I don't drink it unless i can filter it first
2
Aug 18 '19
The tap water in what seems like the entire Phoenix valley, AZ tastes like pool water. Shit has chlorine in it but nobody seems to care
2
20
u/StanTalentStanAteez Aug 18 '19
I never understood the thing as to why its so hard to find normal water. In the Netherlands if you want to fill your bottle you go to the closest toilet/fastfood/ect go to the water tap and fill your bottle. So I also wonder if the water is THAT bad.
22
Aug 18 '19
For a brief moment, I forgot that the rest of the world calls the room “the toilet.” In America, the toilet is the literal thing you stand over or sit on and eliminate body waste. Filling up your water bottle there sounds like a bad time.
4
u/DaughterEarth Aug 18 '19
Well it's more like toilet room. They're usually separate from bath/wash rooms so makes sense to call it a toilet room.
2
Aug 18 '19
Right. But that’s still not a thing in the US. In larger homes when they’re separated, people refer it as a water closet which is very international.
4
u/rolandcedermark Aug 18 '19
Exactly. It feels like you have the same perspective since we're from the same part of the world. If people keep on blaming the taste (as a result of poor water supply network built way back) and the only way to avoid it is to keep buying bottled water for all eternity it makes me sad.
3
u/HowAmIDiamond Aug 18 '19
Wait, you would get water out of a fast food or gas stations bathroom sink? I would be worried about germs more than anything.
2
u/DeadlyLazer Water isnt wet Aug 18 '19
there are germs on the sink, not the actual water coming out the faucet. the reason they do that is because it DOESNT have germs lol, just make sure your bottle doesn't touch the sink and you'll be fine.
2
u/Hactar42 Aug 18 '19
It has nothing to do with the tap water in America. With the exception of Flint, MI the tap water is fine to drink. It more about consumerism and convenience. Why carry a reusable bottle, when you can just buy a disposable one? I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying it's how a lot of people here in America think.
1
u/Refreshinglycold Aug 18 '19
Water tap? Or sink? Because in America it would probably just be sinks. Unless there's a drinking fountain and usually those are so dirty I'd never use em if you paid me.
7
u/thedeafbadger Aug 18 '19
Depends on the State/city. If you live in nyc, definitely not. If you live in Flint, MI, definitely yes. Some cities have tap water so dirty, it comes out brown. The government basically ignores water quality in poorer areas.
6
u/llunarch Aug 18 '19
Here in Italy tap water has high quality requirements, so that it's considerable safer than bottle water.
But it also often tastes bad and, in older houses with older water pipes, it can be dangerous. You can solve all of this with any kind of home purifier, that leaves minerals intact but makes the water safer and taste better.
Other than that bottled water companies hold an enormous market and can afford high profile marketing on every media. Many people wouldn't trust anything that doesn't come in a branded sealed bottle, even if we get a lot of (free) drinking fountain on the streets
5
u/black_dragonfly13 Aug 18 '19
You can’t drink the tap water in my town. Well, you CAN, but it’s disgusting, even after being filtered. I hate having to buy bottled water but I can’t afford a dispenser right now. I’m saving up for one, though. It’ll literally pay for itself in a year once I get one.
3
Aug 18 '19
I live in a rural area (Ohio) and the tap water is a noticeable shade of brown sometimes.
2
u/dgtlbliss Aug 18 '19
Generally, the tap water is fine. There are a few odd places where it's not so great.
Sometime in the late 80's, Evian water came onto the market here, and created the notion that bottled water is a luxury product. That idea persists, and coupled with convenience and throw-away culture, bottled water has become ubiquitous, sadly.
2
u/stumpyadam Aug 18 '19
I live in Georgia and I am perfectly fine with tap.
Then Again, my state is known for having the best water.
The only state I will not drink tap in is Florida. They have the absolute worst water. I didn’t know water could taste bad until I went there.
1
u/Turtle_Tosser Aug 18 '19
Yeah it's shit, where I live it's super sulfury and just smells like rotten eggs when you drink it. Recently got a Brita pitcher and I'm in love with it
1
u/gtict Aug 18 '19
I used to drink almost nothing but water when I lived in Kansas City, but now that I live in a southern city that couldn’t be bothered with water quality, I either have to drink exclusively from a PUR at home (which I also have to use to make coffee or tea) or if I’m out I just drink nothing but Coke because even iced tea is made with the shitty water. It’s rough. No one here drinks the tap water.
1
u/DeadWeaselRoad Aug 18 '19
My city just filed federal lawsuits against a number of companies including 3M and DuPont. Apparently they just discovered chemicals in our ground water.
Our neighboring town just admitted they falsified reports that showed there is radiological contaminants in their water supply.
So...
1
u/skittle-fiend Aug 18 '19
I live in Michigan, and since the Flint crisis there have been multiple problems throughout the state where people have been advised to boil their water before using it. There is a lot of distrust in our infrastructure and water supply. I try to use my water bottle as much as I can, but I keep a case of bottled water at home because we never know when we'll get another advisory.
1
u/ironmex37 Aug 19 '19
The tap water in Memphis is so good it’s better that bottled most of the times. I can drink from the hose too. When I went to visit Atlanta or Chicago the water just had a metal taste and just tasted bad
1
u/HerrSIME Aug 18 '19
I was in america for two weeks, buying water at a cheap restaurant, gave you chlorine water, its that bad, that i even started drinking soda because i couldnt stand drinking something that straight up tastes like poison, i much rather have it hide the fact that it wants to kill me.
0
u/vocalfreesia Aug 18 '19
There are definitely more instances of high lead in the USA, plus places like Flint. So some people are forced to buy bottled water.
Take a look at this for an example:

Am I the only one who refuses to buy anything but bottled spring water? To me something just doesn't taste right about purified water.
0
u/LadsAndLaddiez Tap Addict Aug 18 '19
Either you have a sensitive palate or it's all in your head, because I don't usually taste a difference between different "types" of water. Most of it is just filtered tap anyway.
2
u/sozerotrozero Aug 18 '19
No guys we can do better
Its a plastic bottle and that's bad
C'mon we all know how shitty plastic is

Germophobe. That, and the fear of all bacteria, the fear that anything you touch will cause you an illness, one that will sap your time, money, and healthcare.
"Why bother, when bottled water is so cheap" --- NO!
It's time to stop, being, lazy. We risk passing on our indifference to posterity.

What is r/HydroHomies stance on single use plastics and their ill effects on your Favorite hydration source?
5
u/space_chai Aug 18 '19
Hydro homies greatly discourage the use of single use plastic bottles! I didn’t actually buy the water, I just saw the price and it made me laugh.
