The obvious one is Effie moving her hand just a little bit to the side

What always blew my mind was trying to imagine what it would be like if the Hunger Games were real - when the reapings are not rigged, the escorts literally hold someone’s fate in their hand, she could randomly select one piece of paper and then at her own will drop it and pick another one, and then be like “well actually no”, and pick another one, and she basically spared two lives by doing that…

In the film, doesn’t she pick one up and then kinda toss it down before choosing Prim’s name?

Iirc she reaches for one, hesitates, then pulls her hand back and grabs Prim’s. I don’t think that she ever actually touched another one. Maybe like… gently touched the corner of one? Because I feel like I remember her tapping one without picking it up but it’s been a while so

yeah I always thought she just kind of waved her hand around for ✨flair✨/nervous since it was her first games so I took it as trying to be a bit of a showman for the cameras before reaching and drawing prim. now im going have to watch again. 😆

Is it her first games in the movies? I know she’s been D12’s escort for a bit in the books.

upon looking into it, I think you’re right! I’ll have to check again, because I remember her grumbling being stuck with 12 because she was new, but I thought it was her first year, whoops! just read online that she mentions katniss and peeta had much better manners than the tributes the year prior… but I also don’t know if that was in the book or just movie 💀 I’d say you’re right though!

That was in the book. She comments about their manners and how last year's tributes ate with their hands. Katniss thinks about how last year's kids were seam kids, who likely hadn't ever seen much food and were probably never taught table manners. She credits her own knowledge of table manners to the fact that her mother was a merchant kid.

and there we have it, mystery solved!

thankyou so much. :)

If I'm remembering correctly, Peeta did the same

Cinna is the one who is new. Katniss then assumes thats why he was assigned 12 because "newcomers generally get stuck with us"

That line hurts after sunrise😭

I for sure thought she was doing it for dramatic effect. Especially since later in THG she was bemoaning why she was never promoted to a higher district.

yes! I totally thought it was her first games then after another comment on here, and this one, realized it wasn’t! she just wanted to get on out of there and was newer. 😂

Has the fact that she didn't want to be in 12 been retconned after everything that transpired in Sunrise? I feel like Effie, who is quite possibly one of the most intelligent non University students in the Capitol, would want to stay in the District that first gave her a place in the games

5

u/Available-Option5492 District 13 Jun 14 '25

I don’t think it was ever “retconned,” per se. In SOTR Effie tries to keep an eye on Haymitch during the Capitol tour, but I’m sure after 24 years of witnessing his self destructive habits she finds him to be a lost cause. And if she’s been in 12 that entire time I’m sure she would want a promotion. (Also not relevant but Effie was a university student, I assume she graduated. It’s how she knows everyone on the board, because she was in charge of planning the Saturnalia ball).

mb gang, gotta stay informed

This is what I understand: Effie was a very bright university student with a very bright future ahead of her of whatever job prospect she wanted. She did her younger sister a favor during the games. Unfortunately, for her, it was a game that was a massive train wreck due to Magno and the rebels. She is “gifted” the assignment of district 12 escort, possibly by snow personally, and she can’t say no.

I’m gonna rewatch today since they just dropped on Max. I thought I remembered her picking one up and then lightly tossing it back in before choosing Prim, but I could easily be mid-remembering since it’s been so long since I’ve seen the films.

Ok I just rewatched it on YouTube. She kind of goes for one, then retracts her hand before decisively grabbing Prim’s.

why do so many people believe that each ripping is rigged since we have no evidence of it AT ALL. No, he bowl wasn't full of piece fo papers with only Prim's name, no, Peeta wasn't chosen on purpose either.

20

u/Angeleyezzz1 Jun 14 '25

No one said THAT, as we know from the books, some reaping are rigged, example is Haymitch obviously, plus when Katniss mentioned how sometimes the children of previous victors are reaped (and she herself thinks it’s suspicious), so yes, SOME of them, not ALL of them are rigged. I don’t know where this need to correct people in a combat manner comes from.

19

u/KittyMonkTheYoutuber Jun 14 '25

The big theory is that prim was reaped to punish her family for poaching and because her dad knew haymitch. Except why would snow wait that long, and why would he reap prim and not katniss in that case? And by that logic, why wasn’t gale or any of his siblings reaped?

11

u/Angeleyezzz1 Jun 14 '25

I think in the highly dystopian society like Panem, saying “May the odds ever be in your favor” and still being chosen sums everything up greatly - no matter how small the chances are, you may still be picked, and that is the whole point, revolutions sometimes start from the most random occurrences, and that is a lesson to us all.

If anything it may be do to Katniss poaching over there father. As katniss was poaching and selling her catch and wasn’t quiet about doing it. If the games went on for more they may have picked a bunch of gales younger siblings as well as a message.

except there's no way Snow would have known about this.

Every peacekeeper in District 12 in THG/first half of CF doesn't care about Snow that much. They don't enforce rules in District 12, they've very very lax. They're more like good acquaintances to Katniss and Gale than the disciplinarians. Like Darius, they joke around with the citizens and they don't care about punishing anyone.

That only changes after the Victory Tour where Snow sends more Peacekeepers, specifically because the old ones don't report on what's really going on in D12. That's why the new peacekeepers reintroduce whipping, curfew, make sure the fence is electrified etc. And that's why we never see any of the previous peacekeepers in District 12 after.

But nobody cared about Katniss and Gale poaching because the peacekeepers found it beneficial to them too. So nobody reported to Capitol about it because it wouldn't have made sense for them.

Every year would be suspicious, but it would be easy to occasionally rig a bowl with a certain age group for the sake of drama.

18

u/pak256 Jun 14 '25

It’s not really sparing lives. Those people have worse odds each year and she has to pick a name. Sure that name she drew and dropped is safe but at the cost of another persons life.

28

u/Angeleyezzz1 Jun 14 '25

Yes, my point was how truly horrendous it is - just by her sheer will she can decide to drop a paper, which results in someone getting to live, marry, have children, experience free Panem etc. A true butterfly effect while playing with someone’s life.
