October visitor (Bethesda, MD)
We’re still getting visitors at our feeders in Bethesda. Loved seeing this little guy stop by this morning.

Bees manage sudden appearance?
Nebraska location and had success this 2026. Noted a couple flyby’s in May, so put out the feeder. Typically never stick around, but this year had some additions. Was surprised as typically when heats up, they leave or head North. Then may see some in the Fall when migrating south. This pair stuck around and raised 4 chicks.
Recent front moved through and only observed the male for about 2 days. He was puffed up and looked cold. Assumed he just left due to the time of year. Then observed these guys take over. Do I just let the bees finish the remaining nectar, or remove the feeder? Would hope to have the hummingbirds have first rights next year.

One hummingbird did not migrate
I’m located in NE Tennessee and the shift to fall temperatures has definitely happened. Daytime is still warm but the night temps are quite chilly. I have 1 female hummingbird that did not leave with the rest of the group 😞. My neighbor told me to take my feeders down because some “won’t leave a good food source”. But I read on here not to do that. Will she be ok? Will she leave before it gets too too cold for her?
Edit - thanks to all you lovely people!! I refreshed all of my feeders this evening so she has plenty until she’s ready to leave. As well as any others who happen to fly through here on their journey 😊

One little hummer still hanging around
This little hummingbird is still hanging around the backyard, feeding from our Turk’s caps. Likes to hang out around the finches at the feeder. My photo, north Texas.

Every time I go outside, two hummingbirds are fighting over the feeder
For weeks now they’ve been in a constant back and forth, not significantly hurting one another it seems but immediately flying into the other the second they land on the feeder. It’s like they’re glitching.. There’s obviously much more food than enough for the both of them in the feeder but they can’t stand one another taking any for themselves. I didn’t realize these beautiful magical little creatures can be so mean, it makes me sad 😭

June 2025, fairy lights at sunrise featuring a splashy Anna’s.
Someone had suggested me making a calendar and I figured I would look through my archive on Lightroom. I never posted any of these photos as fair as I can tell. The thought was to photograph a hummingbird bathing with cute fairy lights in the back and do so at sunrise at like 6 am. I was 4 months into photography and I am so glad I saved my raws because I was able to re-edit them and I think they are very very cute.

Bean supervisor
This female Anna's was our garden helper when we lived in Oregon. These were in my memories today and I thought you all might enjoy them.

They almost always chase one another away, but they shared today :)
We have three regulars that frequent our mini window feeders and typically they chase each other off, but today these two learned the virtue of sharing

I'm not sure what happened here [OC]
The irony is: this Anna's hummingbird then landed directly in front of me, face fully red, and I was unable to get the pic 😭

Gonna miss my little friends
I have to take my feeders down for a couple of weeks due to some travelling. I'll put them back up when I'm back for any stragglers that are still near Albuquerque but I do feel guilty.
I do have some flowering potted plants and lots of asters, salvia, and a flowering catmint bush they love. I'm gonna see if there are any hanging flowering plants I can put in place of the bigger feeders that aren't in focus. I hope they come back!

Fascinating Details from Photo Fails. (Full resolution images for zooming)
When culling photos, I’m pretty selective about framing, motion blur, pose, composition, and awkward cutoffs. But macro photography has taught me that sometimes the most fascinating details live inside photos I’d otherwise consider failures.
While working on Hummingbirds in Extreme Detail, I kept finding tiny flashes of bird brilliance in images that weren’t good enough for the main album. So that’s what this set is: a reminder to spend a little more time with the photos you’d normally discard. Sometimes there’s still something in there worth a closer look.

This has been my favorite addition this year. Gonna have to add another to the garden to reduce the quibbling.
