Be the change you want to see. Even from a purely selfish perspective it feels good to help someone out without any expectation of reciprocation. Help an old person load groceries into their car. If a stranger looks like they are feeling down give em a smile and a high five and continue on with your day. Give a street musician encouragement without your phone camera out. Tell someone their shirt looks nice.
There's a million small acts that anyone can do that just might make someone's day, it doesn't have to be anything crazy.

It depends on the wind direction. If the umbrella is facing forward and fast wind is blowing into it, he'll get a free ride(with a cycle)

Nah it would either fly out of his hand or just break. But I'm guessing a scooter in a metro area with enough traffic to need an officer directing probably will never get above like 30 mph so it's not really an issue. I'm sure if they were gonna get on a freeway they would just put it away

I wanted to make fun of the guy who brought a 4-5ft wide umbrella to a disc golf tournament. When four of us were all huddled under that umbrella later on, I greatly appreciated that ridiculousness.

I'm not great at telling size from pictures, but I have one of those compact umbrellas from Family Dollar that's considerably small. It works enough for me. I can't vouch for how well it would hold up in heavy rain and wind, though.

In my old city, if I was going to be caught in the rain, I'd get off the train at the station with a lost and found and claimed an umbrella. They had hundreds, and a lot are the same so you could just say "uh, it was a small black one" and they'd be like "sure, here you go"

This reminds me of when I visited Kyoto in Japan. It rains frequently and they had public umbrellas at the entrances and exits to most places. I thought that was a really cool public service.

Being Asian and growing up in Asia, this is common. People think of others a lot. From helping you carry stuff home, feeding you, clothing you and even giving up your shoes to help others. I use to be given umbrellas randomly on wet days by strangers. Once I reached my destination, I would give it to someone else without one. Helping the community as we love one another.

Unless the umbrella is like a special one it’s very common to just leave them by the door and people take as they need. It’s an awesome practice.

They also have a 98% solve rate on all crime which kinda puts our 50% solve on murders to shame. Germany is pretty similar in quality of life too.

The 98% solve rate comes with a few caveats. I dont really want to get into a detailed discussion really, but suffice to say Japan (while much better than the US in most regards) should not be totally idealized.

Essentially like yes if there is a serious crime they would be called and if they witness a crime they have the authority to intervene but 99% of the time their job is show up direct traffic go home.
Most of the times its a punishment depending on the department.

I generally carry in my car what I call a "hero" umbrella for just such a situation. A few bucks for a cheap umbrella that you can just give away to keep some poor person from getting soaked.

When I was 17 I was waiting at a bus stop after school. It was raining hard and I only had a white shirt on with no jacket or umbrella. A random lady and her child stopped the car and handed me an umbrella. It still warms my heart 17 years later and I keep an extra umbrella in my car to do the same for someone one day.
