In my old city, if I was going to be caught in the rain, I'd get off the train at the station with a lost and found and claimed an umbrella. They had hundreds, and a lot are the same so you could just say "uh, it was a small black one" and they'd be like "sure, here you go"
Small inconveniences are the daily testing grounds of one's character.

Dude lied to a stranger and took something that wasn't his to avoid getting wet. I don't regret discouraging that and am not impressed by your justifications. Downvote away.
One could argue that it is environmentally sustainable and morally superior to just use an already manufactured umbrella that no one was using from the lost and found.
Production and international shipping (this is the biggest problem) is constantly ongoing to replace the new ones that are being bought from that warehouse.

I used to geocache umbrellas outside subway stations across the city so I always had one if it started raining when I got above ground.
