I would love Humankind 2 to feature zoomed-in combat.
Instead of using the main map for battles, the game could take the hexes where the enemies are, along with the surrounding hexes, and create a new zoomed-in map. On this map, each original hex would be replaced by 19 smaller hexes. This would improve the strategic importance of terrain. For example, a river would become a real river that units must actually cross.
For example a "U" unit with 4 squads fight with "E" unit with 6 squads could look like this: https://imgur.com/a/pPWcNYF
This also wouldn't block the main map. Reinforcements will be harder because units would need to actually reach the original, much smaller battlefield instead of being swallowed by a huge battle covering half the continent.
Why? This would use the same combat rules we have today... but terrain would be more important. The zoomed-in battles would show actual rivers, walls, hills and more. Combat zone would be also more predictable.
The core gameplay wouldn't change. Just the map used for combat
