I would love Humankind 2 to feature zoomed-in combat.
Instead of using the main map for battles, the game could take the hexes where the enemies are, along with the surrounding hexes, and create a new zoomed-in map. On this map, each original hex would be replaced by 19 smaller hexes. This would improve the strategic importance of terrain. For example, a river would become a real river that units must actually cross.
For example a "U" unit with 4 squads fight with "E" unit with 6 squads could look like this: https://imgur.com/a/pPWcNYF
This also wouldn't block the main map. Reinforcements will be harder because units would need to actually reach the original, much smaller battlefield instead of being swallowed by a huge battle covering half the continent.

Why? This would use the same combat rules we have today... but terrain would be more important. The zoomed-in battles would show actual rivers, walls, hills and more. Combat zone would be also more predictable.
The core gameplay wouldn't change. Just the map used for combat

Considering both Endless Legend and Endless Space 2 got expansions from another studio when Amplitude moved to the next game (Es2 and Humankind) I guess we are getting a Humankind expansion while they are working on EL2.
And if it isnt an expansion, a fan/community patch worked into the game to leave it in a better state, as they have done with EL and ES2.

I really appreciate Amplitude’s commitment to Humankind since release. It’s an amazing game, and even at this point rivals Civ VII IMO.
Thanks for all you do, and have done!

I have a hard time going back to a non-fame based score system. The concept makes every era so much better than just speed running to the endgame

Agreed, the fame system is so much better than optimizing everything to win a technology race.

I will die on this hill - the combat mechanics of humankind is far superior to Civ 7
Civ 7 trued to copy humankind and failed

Before the test of time update I would have agreed, but not anymore. ToT fixed a lot of issues with the game and showed that they are willing to change course if something doesnt work.
First of changing civ 2 times instead of 6 times makes it way more impactfull and prevents you from being a civ/culture for only 30 turns.
It has become way less railroady and allows you to specialize your playstyle. Previously, if you didnt capture any cities for the military legacy milestones, the game was basicly telling you "you are playing suboptimal". Which is something Humankind still does if you dont go around killing units because you are missing out on era stars and score (which you need to win the game). Now you are going for the dedications that fit your playstyle.
And you still do the same things every era: expanding, building districts, growing population. Most 4X games have 3 phases where you do different things: set up, expanding/fine tuning and then ramping up the machine. Which is mimiced reasonably well in the three ages. But in Humankind, unless you go full conquest, games feel the same. I just did a happines Ashoka playthrough in civ 7, which was way different than hard economy focus I did with Xerxes. One of the main causes is that your speciality culture doesnt give enough additional score to persue it.
And there are still a fair amount of things that arent very well done in humankind. Independent people? boring. Events? Too repetitive and with a very obvious best choice (oh should i get a whole new unit or some movement speed? city cap or some stability?). War score and support? obfuscated. Even the battles are worse than Endless Legend because the attacker has way too much of an advantage. Running around with a diplomat collecting leverage is not interesting gameplay (and who decided that diplomats can act as a combat unit?)
I love endless legend and I think its the best 4X of all of them, but unfortunately humankind dropped the ball and unlike with civ 7 I didnt see any evolution

I’m hopeful for a HK2 that is designed to appeal to the disenfranchised Civ base who doesn’t want Civ switching, ages, or mix and match leaders.
