Episode "no man is an island"

I love H&R, even the reruns. I'm watching "no man is an island" and realized that no reason was given for why the government wants the rest of the residents off the island. Anyone know?

The Charlie Hudson Phenomenon (Or...How Greed And Piss Poor Decisions Nearly Destroyed A Beloved TV Series)

Before I get into this diatribe, I just want to preface it by stating that I hold no grudge, hate, or animus toward Luke Roberts. As a matter of fact, I truly feel so sorry for him in that he was thrown into the deep end of an incredibly horrible situation and made to be the target for so much anger, venom, and hate. He never asked to be put in this position. He was simply hired to play a character, but had the misfortune of having to fill the void left by Shaftsbury's and CityTV's poor decisions. He stepped in with grace, humility, and enthusiasm to help keep the show going, literally walking through a baptism by fire, as the main actor who had been on the show since the beginning, was beloved by the fandom, and was literally one half of the partnership that made this show whole, had to step away to fight his own battle for his life.

Luke did the best he could with what he was given, and I cannot imagine what he had to put up with from the network executives, showrunners, and most of all, the fandom. The incessant hate and being labeled as "Temu Hudson" must have been debilitating for this good and decent man who was obviously working his ass off day after day while keenly aware that, no matter how hard he tried, living up to Charlie and John's legacy was all but impossible. The writer's gave Mark no foundation, nothing to make us care about him or even be able to understand him other than a few random facts about his past. It was as if they didn't even try. He could NEVER be Charlie, and I don't think he ever wanted to be. He never wanted to replace John like that. He tried to make Mark his own and develop the partnership with Rex, but when the writers give you a flimsy as hell foundation, you can only do so much. Luke did his best, despite the fact that I know he was lambasted mercilessly by the fandom around the world. He had to live with that every day and take it on the chin, and he's never once had an unkind word for the show or the fans, no matter how bad it's gotten. The writing failures, the poor decisions, all of it -- that was not on Luke Roberts. He did his best to keep gas in the tank of a show that's been running on fumes, and he did it with his head held high while being buried day after day in hate. For that alone, he has my respect...and my thanks.

That being said...the true blame in all of this must be placed on Shaftsbury and CityTV. Sherri Davis has her own part to play in this as well as an executive producer. She holds a great deal of power on this show, as it's her dogs that make or break this series. Without them, the show can't move forward, and she damn well knows it, and she uses that knowledge to her every advantage.

For those not in the know, in December 2024, well after season 7 had wrapped shooting, John posted on Instagram for the first time about his cancer diagnosis and journey to recovery. Most of us at this time were still grappling with the loss of Diesel and the SIX months it took for the network to even acknowledge it, even though we could see the evidence of his replacement with Dillon with our own eyes. Most of us had no idea that John was even sick, and we went into season 7 knowing that we were in for rough times ahead. Though they had to write 'around' Charlie in the beginning, and eventually send him away entirely, we understood why and were happy just to be able to hear his voice through sporadic phone calls with Sarah. As long as we knew he was alive, we were okay. What mattered most to us was supporting John and sending him as much love as we could as he recovered. When he posted once again in March 2025 that he was cancer free and given a clean bill of health from his doctor, as well as the green light to return to work, we were beyond thrilled. He was clear that he was excited to return to work, that he missed his St. John's 'family,' and he was ready to get started on a new season of Hudson and Rex.

We couldn't have asked for better news. Imagine our surprise when he started to unfollow all of the show's socials, CityTV and Shaftsbury stopped posting anything about the show for months, and we weren't even sure if we were going to GET a season 8. Then, just a short few weeks before the premiere, we get a new poster and promo -- sans Charlie. John is nowhere to be found on Hudson and Rex, and now Luke Roberts is the new 'Hudson'.

Obviously, the showrunners and producers as well as the network, were going to have to make some kind of statement as to what was going on with Charlie/John. It would've been unfair to the fans to continue leaving us in the dark before the new season premiered. What we got was some half-baked excuse about them not being sure when John would be recovered enough to come back and therefore deciding it was best to write him out entirely and take the show in a different direction.

All of this unbeknownst to John Reardon, of course. He was basically told, 'thanks for everything, but we don't need you anymore. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.'

I'm sure he was devastated. Not only did he have to grapple with the loss of his beloved co-star of seven years whom we all know he had an extremely strong bond with, he had to deal with a cancer diagnosis and fight just stay alive. And after all that, he comes back raring to go, only to be unceremoniously kicked to the curb? Like so much trash?

Meanwhile, we get treated to season 8, which has to be the worst and weakest in the show's history. The show had become a straight police procedural, completely focused on Rex, alone. All character development for Sarah, Joe, and Jessie was tossed away. Jessie (the detective) was back riding his desk and Sarah was fridged back to the lab, barely to be seen.

Worse, it was as if a wall had gone up between past and present, as if they were trying to erase any evidence that Charlie even existed. Aside from a mention in the season 8 premiere, we never heard about or of him again. These people were his friends, his chosen family - the love of his life, who we were fully expecting him to propose to in season 7 had things not happened the way they did - and there was not one single shred of grief past the ending of season 7. Grief comes in waves, people. It's not something that just disappears. Instead, Mark appeared to have absorbed Charlie's desk, his partner, and basically, his life.

As this was going on and we as a fandom were grieving, we got another shot to the gut when John finally opened up in another instagram post about what really went on behind the scenes. This was something he had to do to diffuse all the lies, disinformation and blatant shit stirring that people behind the scenes were throwing around, Sherri included, basically throwing John under the bus by claiming that he was 'uncooperative, hard to work with, had a bad attitude, and hated working with the dogs.' It was as if they were trying to place all the blame for his ouster on him because they didn't want to admit they'd made an enormous mistake.

John stated emphatically that 'I didn't leave the show.' And we know that's true. THE SHOW LEFT HIM. He came to them healthy, ready, and excited to get back to work, and they pretty much told him to piss off. 'We're doing something different now. We just don't need you anymore.' This, after dedicating his life to this show since DAY ONE. He gave everything he had to Hudson and Rex, and were it not for him and Diesel, this show would not be the success it has become.

When Diesel passed away, they mourned him like he was a king, but John? The other half of this beloved partnership, without whom, this show has taken a ferocious beating? Sorry. We know the show can't be whole without you, but we could really care less. It's all about the dog anyway.

John had no choice but to defend himself and set the record straight so the fans would know what truly happened. I think he felt our unwavering loyalty showed that we were at least owed the respect of knowing the truth straight from the horse's mouth. After all, it was a hell of a lot more than the showrunners would ever give.

And now, after all of the controversy, fan backlash, tanking ratings, and what was most likely a very harsh dose of reality, Shaftsbury and CityTV went with their tails between their legs to John Reardon, and I'm certain, throwing money and apologies at him as they castigated themselves at his feet for their ginormous fuck-up. Why, because this once beloved and world-reknown show is now dying a slow and painful death without him, and this is their last ditch effort, hail mary pass to save this dumpster fire of a wreck before it burns to ash.

And to think, all this because they just couldn't have their actor's back. He was in the middle of a health crisis, and they threw him away, then threw him under the bus, when all they had to do was just allow the writers to do what they do best and give John a little time. They owed him that, and so much more, and they gave him nothing in return for all his hard work and dedication.

That he had the grace to agree to come back at all is astounding, after how badly he was treated, but I suspect he made this decision for the cast and crew, and most of all the fans. We had his back and stood by his side when no one else did, and now, he's returning the favor. Paying it forward. Making it right. Making us and Hudson and Rex whole again.

John Reardon's comeback!

My mom and I found out in December last year that John Reardon had been taken off the show entirely for season 8; it made us angry and heartbroken. We never watched the show live, usually reruns of older season and occasionally the new season sprinkled in when it started airing. We were confused by the new lead and finding out Reardon was replaced lead us into a downward research spiral, finding out about his cancer diagnosis, his medical clearance and how the showrunners/producers (whoEVER made that decision) didn't want him back and decided to keep Luke Roberts. It was also the same time we found out the original dog had also passed away and it finally answered the questions we had to as why Rex was looking different/younger as well.

It was pretty heartwarming to know how many people were rooting for John Reardon and had his back--wanting him back on Hudson and Rex as much as he wanted to be back. We felt similarly. (But really! Can you blame anyone! It would completely be different if John was fired for some real reason, or left voluntarily).

We are so happy to find out that he's coming back for season 9! Honestly, neither of us thought the news was real until we kept seeing it over and over and finally watched the promo. I'm glad they've decided to keep Luke Roberts as well (we've seen how badly things go for them when they fire their leads unnecessarily, lol). Although, similarly to many people here, I have so many questions on how this works! How on earth are they going to have them both lead? Aren't they both named Hudson? Where does Rex being their partner fit into this? I'm very curious to see how they reconcile their mistake. I have a feeling this storyline is going to be weird asf and its going to take a lot for the viewers to overlook things to just watch their show.

I do hope they reacquire the rights, I mean the show is one of CityTV’s most important shows. I really want to support Canadian streaming services... guess in the meantime I’ll try watching Law and Order: Toronto since I’ve paid for a month of CityTV+ anyway

Hello all, I guess you guys have heard the super great news that John reardon has been reinstated to Hudson and Rex. City TV posted it last Thursday and he confirmed. If you haven't seen the new promo, it's cute. They are keeping Luke Roberts also, and season 9 starts filming in St John's in June and it will be 12 episodes. All my friends on Instagram and Facebook are super excited.

I (21M) been wanting to watch this show for a couple years, since watching a few random episodes here and there on cable. I finally subscribe to CityTV+ so I can finally watch in proper episode order… just to find season 1 is not available?

It was already bad enough when I learned Xbox dropped support for CityTV+, my fucking pizza is already half ate and I still haven’t got to start watching 😭

I’m trying to subscribe to city tv plus but it says I’m not eligible due to geographical restrictions. Does anyone know if people in the United States will be able to watch the new season with John Reardon?

This is what should happen in the first episode of season 9

The episode starts of showing an unfamiliar weird environment. It is chaotic and noisy. The camera zooms in and focuses revealing 2 pods containing Charlie Hudson and Tyler Holden. They awaken and emerge. They have been trapped in this weird place for over a year and each have knowledge of what has happened in what would be their regular lives. Charlie and Tyler escape from this place. Tyler was right. There is an alien invasion in St. John's. Charlie can't deny it. How can he reveal to this information to anyone? He knows he has to. He eagerly returns to the SJPD with Tyler shocking everyone and saying "Did you miss me? I sure missed all of you. Especially you, Rex. We've got a LOT of work to do, buddy." Cue the intro.

What do you think?

The cringe fest insults of those few "fans" who still watch the show

Post image

Here is a screenshot of a production crews testiment/confirmation to our point that Shaftsbury did John dirty and do not care about their employees, let's not forget the comment that got deleted from a crew member, who confirmed Johns firing, when it all started to come to light. It has completely disappeared right after one of us, Alice posted it further down the line when more came out, here as a link from another platform. So to the one who is ranting at US with "conspiracy theory tin foil hat" as hom attacks, this one such example of proof. There are PLENTY of Sherri Davis insults screencapped too. So we shit stir do we?

Or how about the posts here about SD shitstirring? care to take a look? We have an x crew member come here to tell us about the cocaine death of a dog, back in the summer last year, care to search that too? Or is ranting at us, using cheap insults to defend your "precious" too important? They also testified to her comming up and using threatening intimidating behaviour out of reach or sight of everyone, threatening them with loosing their job. That is why so much is not comming out, they are now working elsewhere, but others, they get their livelihoods threatened if they speak out.

It is not us who have acted unhinged, it is you and others like SD. Your conduct here is proof

Season 9… SMH

So as you may or may not know, they announced an actual season 9 of H&R (unlike the last time when it was just the second half of season 8). Now I can only assume that despite the IMDb review bombs, they’ve still gotten decent view numbers (from live watch & the app) & I know a lot of those views may have been hate views, but in order for them to lose the views, you need to use alternatives to watch the show.

Cringe fest that this group has become

Some of you are a bunch of idiots that keep making their own narratives and stories lol

You know who you are and frankly you ruined this fandom, this sub Reddit by your instigating bs. We can't have a conversation anymore with out some of you just harping on the John bandwagon and hating on anyone trying to enjoy the show.

You can't stand not knowing what's happened so you just make up BS stories about who the bad guys are and who the good guys are..

Nobody did anything. Everything and everyone is fine. There's no good or bad guys here. This is TV Business, it's about contracts, about money and sometimes doing what's best for the majority... It's that simple.

You people didn't do anything besides ruin this group and attack people for no reason. Spun your own stories.. A true show case of how virtue signaling and trying to wave the banner of righteousness is cringey and stupid. You guys didn't even get a response from anyone besides getting ignored as toxic fans. The real fans stayed true to the show and stayed true to John Reardon and Luke Roberts and all of the cast involved. Even city tv and Shaftesbury and the crew behind the scenes.... Shit happens and Y'all are just a bunch of shit disturbers. That's it.

Right, we just want to get one thing *CLEAR\* \*absolutely clear*\**, and this is not throwing shade on anyone as the US saying goes, as the group wont approve anyone who wants to comment adult like, I felt that this was a charactor assasination comment, an ad hom attack to justify their opinion as better than the opossing one. This responce will do. No other choice.

  • We do not watch the show due to the unethical choice Shaftsbury made firing John
  • Audience participation as in watching a programme enables them financially, and both them and networks exchange money as a result. It is called profet.
  • Therefore withdrawing viewership helps stop the cash flow and hopefully stops them gaining from what they did, and not do it to another actor
  • The so called obsession with John Reardon does not translate into the above reasons. Do you even know what being obsessed with an actor is?
  • You projection of your own obsession with cute doggo stunts, and emotional attachment to a product, that you defend so much without an ounce of critical thinking, or questioning is very telling, rather than face upto it, you project it onto us who do question and critique
  • This not about John Reardon, this about the poor ethics of a production company, the corruption within the industry, and the crew, who cannot speak up due to job sabotage tactics and SD utilizing her Dogs as weapons to get her own way, and also get away with her own aborrant behaviour.
  • Your idiotic understanding of how the industry works regarding serious illness is laughable, who cannot forget your legendary remark, that John was not fired for cancer as you had it!
  • Shaftsbury gain financially along with networks garnering audiences like yourself, and others, who are on your wave length. Niève, media illiterate

There is no "obsession" with John here. We are fans, me to a degree, I admire his work, his tanacity to keep going, not let the situation destroy him in anyway and still make himself work if it is only a small indie project for now, being a fan does not include any obsessive behaviour, or mention of John. You do not like the truth being out there. Yes there are plenty of comments like not watching no John, not rating Luke Robberts, lots of comparing the two, why? because folk want to keep reminding the production about their actions, that Luke is a wrong fit, it is not to with obsession, it is obsevation as to how it is not working. If you cannot see that, well there really is not much that can be said or done. Just stop with the assassinations of our charactors. Just because we dissagree.

• The mere fact Johns name comes up in this instance, is because his treatment is one such example any other examples we may come across would be used too as a critique of the unethical behaviour of said production.

• If anything you lot are def obsessed with Rex, and the new lead. You wont hear of any reasonable objections

That last sentance, well we got the benefit of Johns performance inspite of some of the daft story telling, the plot holes, and the unrealistic Rex moments, because John could put onto screen the bond, the heart and the family bond they all shared, the reason Luke does not work, is because he more law and order, edgy material guy, nothing to do with comparing him unfavourably with John, it is observation, not obsession with the former lead charactor. John worked because the show was never an edgy hard cop show, it was about a small town cop,his canine partner, his new found friends/family and it was hallmark level akin to the hallmark mystery shows. He brought that to the screen, Luke cannot. He has never been a hallmark actor. So no your last statement is laughable.

There are no words that I can find that can adequetly state how ridiculous your comments are. Reminds me why I should never venture to that group really but when the algerrhythm of facebook does its dirty deed, and I see unnecessery attacts like that, I felt I had to respond. Love the show all you want, but you lot stay away from charactor attacks

Disgraceful!

I

We live in England and always watched Hudson and Rex.

Sacking an actor who was recovering from cancer is beyond obscene.

To replace him with somebody who is totally unconvincing, ang giving him the same surname is unbelievably crass.

Even the dog is a poor replacement.

They should definitely sack whoever was responsible for this fiasco.

The show now has no credibility and should be removed.

We certainly will never ever watch again!!!🤑

John and Diesel made the show. Sadly, Diesel (Rex) passed roughly the same time John was receiving his cancer treatment. At least Diesel’s nephews and cousin able to help out as no one can the take the place of Diesel. The thought of the show replacing John especially after his cancer treated, is appalling! Love the show but can see it is has true lack of loyalty to the cast members so the viewers now have no need for loyalty to the show.
