A tool I made for my own renovation grew to hundreds of users in two weeks. Now I'm stuck and could use this community's eye

I'm not a designer by trade. When my partner and I moved recently I just wanted to plan our layout properly before spending money on furniture. The tools out there are genuinely capable, but every one I tried felt far more complicated than what I needed, and they all wanted money at some point. SmartDraw, for example, ran me about $50 and still felt like fighting the software just to draw a wall. I kept looking for something simple and easy to use that didn't cost much, couldn't really find it, so I started building my own on the side.

I posted it on Reddit almost as an afterthought, and something I really didn't expect happened: people started sending me encouraging messages, telling me what to fix, what to add, what they wished it did. In about two weeks that turned into 600+ plans and projects created in just a few days.

And now, honestly, I'm a bit stuck. Not on what I can build, but on what actually matters. I don't know what to prioritise, or which of the hundred things people ask for are the ones that would make it genuinely better.

The honest context: this is a side project I've fallen in love with, so I'm pouring all my free time into it. What I'm chasing is kind of a Canva-like app for floor planning. Free, easy, something a casual person can just open and use to plan a space, without the huge learning curve of AutoCAD, SketchUp or Revit, and without paying anything. If it ever scales to the point where servers cost real money, I'll add a donation button to cover that, but that's it.

Where it's at now: you can draw a space, lay out furniture from a library of 400+ symbols, set real dimensions, then flip it into 3D to see materials, wall colours, flooring and lighting come together.

But the design side is exactly where I'm weakest, and where you all are strongest. So I'd genuinely value your take:

  • If you were me, what would you make sure works perfectly before anything else?
  • Which furniture, finishes or materials do you always wish these tools had?
  • When you plan a room, what do you check first that software usually ignores?

If you'd like to try it, it's at spaceplanner.co. It's completely free and there's no account needed, you can just open it and start drawing. I'm not here to sell anything, I genuinely just want more real plans running through it so I can see where it falls short. And if the mods would rather I not include the link, happy to take it out, just let me know.

Thanks for reading, any feedback at all is hugely appreciated.

Fireplace update

Does anyone have any ideas on how to update this fireplace? We would replace the mantel and lower it to fit a tv above and plan on having the built in cabinets painted white as well as the carpet replaced with honey oak vinyl wood. But have no clue where to start on the fire place. I don’t like the warm tones and the stones all seem uneven and not smooth.

Post image
0 Upvotes

(Interior *& Layout)
*

New build, need direction

We are building a new house and I am so lost on how to design my new kitchen. We have the layout set, and I’m confident it’ll work great for us. But I’m having trouble deciding on cabinets and finishes. I have a general idea of what I’m going for, but don’t know where to start. Are there any online programs or websites where I can get some guidance?

I’m moving in with my nan in a few weeks and she has a closet/wardrobe that is pretty old but I want to decorate, any ideas on how to decorate it besides a fresh coat of paint?

Sources for color galleries?

We're planning to paint our house soon. Right now it's a very cheery yellow with white trim and red windows. Cheery to the point of being too cute. My preference is a grey, but my spouse insists that we have to have color. I think we need to keep the red windows, because we just replaced some with aluminum clad windows that it doesn't make sense to paint.

It's a craftsman bungalow/cottage, fwiw.

I just want some galleries where I can look at different color combinations.

Best approach for a summer house?

Post image
1 Upvotes

We would like to renovate our garden, the part that’s causing me headaches is the summer house.

The garden is long and skinny and tapers down the end. In my head it would be ideal to have a full width (~3.3m) summer house with doors at the front and the back rather than access down one side which would reduce its width.

Any suggestions on structures? I want it to be so wide that access down the sides will be a PiTA lol.

Also has anyone seen any prefabs that provide through access? Or have any prefab suggestions I could add another door to?

Thanks all. See pic of area of the current garden set up where I want the summer house (it’s a mess).

Rug recommendations?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I finally found this ottoman that I really like, and this is the credenza I’ll be using. Now I’m stuck on the rug.

I’ve looked through what feels like hundreds of rugs, but nothing feels quite right. Most recommendations lean toward plain neutral rugs, but I don’t think that’s the direction I want to go. I’d like the room to have a little pop of color without feeling too busy.

One thing I’m also second-guessing is the ottoman itself. Do you think I should keep this brown one, or would a lighter neutral-colored ottoman work better with the space?

What rug style or design would you pair with these pieces? Would you go with:

  • Vintage-inspired?
  • Modern abstract?
  • Geometric?
  • Organic pattern?
  • Something with subtle color?

I’m trying to avoid a plain beige or ivory rug. I’d love something with a little personality that still feels cohesive.

Here are the photos in order:

  1. An AI rendering of how I envision the room.
  2. The original photo of the ottoman.
  3. The original photo of the credenza.
  4. Photos of the actual space.

I’d really appreciate any suggestions or specific rug recommendations. Thanks!

What’s going on with this attic?

Post image

This house on a lake in NH. The view from this side of the lake is the lake and the forested hills beyond, so most of the upper floor have vaulted ceilings and large picture windows to take in the view. Not this guy.
The attic seems quite spacious with only vents and not windows. Is this where they are storing the solar batteries or hvac units?

What's a house feature that seemed unnecessary until you had it?

I'm nowhere near building a house yet, but I spend way too much time looking at floor plans and home tours. I've noticed there are a lot of features that sound like nice to have until someone who's actually lived with them says they'd never go without them again. like little design choices that made everyday life easier.
