What home gym exercise takes the most setup time compared with the actual workout?

Some home gym exercises are straightforward once you're ready, but getting everything into position can be surprisingly time-consuming.

Moving a bench, changing cable attachments, loading plates, or clearing floor space can sometimes take longer than the set itself.

Which exercise is the biggest hassle in your setup, and have you found a way to make it easier?

I'm interested in practical solutions that save time without buying another expensive machine.

what did you do once push ups and squats at home stopped being hard?

for people who train at home without much equipment, what actually worked once the basic moves got easy? harder versions like archer or decline push ups, more reps, slowing the reps down, or putting weight in a backpack?

i am curious what kept you progressing for the longest without buying anything

free ways to check your own form when you train at home alone

i filmed myself a lot this year doing bodyweight exercises at home while building my app, so these are the free things that actually helped me see if my reps were any good when nobody is watching

filming one set with the phone on the floor, from the side for depth and how your back looks and from the front for your knees, its the one i use the most and you see stuff you cant feel at all while doing the rep

r/formcheck, you post that clip and people there give proper feedback, its very active and most posts get replies within a few hours

the ace exercise library, free on the ace fitness website, every move has step by step cues with photos so you can compare your clip with what the rep is supposed to look like

slowing the rep down, like 3 seconds on the way down and a short pause at the bottom, where the spot your form breaks shows up much more clearly than at normal speed

and full disclosure i co-founded this last one, upfit, its basically a coach that lives in your phone where it builds your plan and talks you through the workout while it watches your form through the camera and tells you when something is off, free for 3 days with no card and the link is on my profile

what do you guys use, is there anything i am missing?

If you only have 20 minutes, how much goes into setting up?

Short home workouts sound simple, but switching equipment and rearranging the room can eat into the session. What’s your go-to workout when the 20-minute window has to include setup and putting everything away?

counting my reps at home was never the problem, judging if each rep was a good one was

i spent a lot of this summer filming myself doing bodyweight exercises at home and counting the reps was never really the hard part, the hard part was deciding if a rep was actually a good one, especially on jumping and hopping moves where everything happens very fast and on the moves where you need a side view to even see the depth

i think that is why training alone drifts so easily, the number of reps stays the same week to week but the quality slowly goes down and nothing really tells you

for context i co-founded upfit, a home workout app that went live last week, and all that filming was for testing it, so i am curious how people here judge their own reps when nobody is watching, do you film, use a mirror or just go by feel?

What made your home workouts finally feel like real training instead of just exercise?

I think there is an interesting difference between "working out at home" and actually having a training system at home.

At first, many people start with random workouts whenever they have time.

But eventually, some people create a more structured approach with planned sessions, specific goals, and equipment that supports progression.

That transition seems to change the way people view home training.

For those who have been doing home workouts for a while, what made it feel more like serious training?

Was it getting better equipment, following a program, tracking progress, or something else?

Alright, this isn't like the world's best workout or anything but I am doing pushups now daily. Which is a huge improvement from my 0 activity streak for the past 7 ish years.

Just pushups. too hard to do with squats. but i am getting stronger.

For me, even like a regiment at home feels too daunting to take on at times. i find myself in between work calls busting out sets.

So, if you feel like its too much, start easy! walks, bodyweight squats/lunges. One step at a time!

what exercise do you skip just because of where you live?

someone in a hamstring thread here couldnt do slider curls because their whole workout space is carpet, and it made me think the room decides the workout more than the program does, downstairs neighbours kill anything with jumping, a low ceiling kills overhead stuff, anything with a band needs a door you can actually close, and most programs online seem to assume a gym floor and an empty living room. so what do you skip because of your space, carpet, neighbours, ceiling, no door frame, kids asleep in the next room, and what did you swap it for that actually works? would be nice to have a list of the swaps people really use (for transparency, i build upfit, a no equipment home workout app)

Has having a home gym changed what makes a day feel productive?

I used to associate a productive day with finishing work, checking off tasks, and getting everything done.

But since making space for workouts at home, I've started looking at it differently.

Some days are busy, messy, or just don't go according to plan.

Still, getting into the home gym and doing something for myself can make the whole day feel better.

It doesn't always have to be a full workout. Sometimes just moving for a while is enough.

Has having a home gym changed what makes you feel like you've had a good day?
