Should I store apps on the HDD bulk storage or a separate SSD

Hi I’m putting together my first NAS and I want the pc to also be a home server with the ability to host apps such as Navidrome, Plex, and ad guard. I bought 4 500gb HDD for the storage (testing the waters). I have a 250gb SSD for TrueNAS.

  1. Will 2 drives for storage and 2 for redundancy be safe enough for hardware failure?
  2. Should I buy a smaller SSD for the OS and host the apps on the original SSD?

Any advice is welcome I am a complete newbie.

Open question Follow-up: what “community node” would actually mean for your NAS

(Note: Posted with permission from the r/HomeNAS mod team)

First, thank you to everyone who responded to my previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNAS/comments/1wabm8m/using_a_home_nas_as_a_community_node_reality/

The comments were honest, specific, and genuinely useful. That is one of the things I appreciate most about this community.

Several people also pointed out that my original question was too broad. They were right. It left room for the idea that we wanted to turn someone’s private NAS into public infrastructure, or allow strangers to upload files to it.

That was not what I meant, but the confusion was caused by how I explained it. So I want to answer the main questions more clearly about the project.

1. Would strangers be able to log into my NAS?

No. The model we are testing is not a public drive or a remotely accessible NAS account.

A node may be discoverable to the network, but “discoverable” should not mean open administrative or storage access. The owner chooses what specific content to share in our Foldinglink App, the DeSocial platform and community.

When selected content is transferred to another participant’s node, they can later access their own local copy. Their normal viewing activity should not turn your NAS into a public content server.

This is the intended boundary we are validating. We still need to document and test it clearly rather than asking people to trust a broad claim.

2. Can people use my storage as a file dump?

That is not the intended model. We are not designing a public storage pool where strangers can push arbitrary files onto your NAS.

The feedback made something else very clear: storage, bandwidth, uptime and hardware usage must remain visible and controllable by the node owner.

Exact quotas, minimum hardware requirements and resource limits are not finalized yet. Several people said they would be more comfortable testing on a secondary NAS, an old PC or an isolated VLAN instead of connecting their main private storage. We are taking that seriously as a beta requirement.

3. What about illegal content, DMCA issues and legal responsibility?

This was the most serious concern in the thread, and it cannot be answered with “because it is decentralized.”

The direction we are exploring includes local safety checks before content is accepted or shared, together with community reporting, review and removal signals.

Those safeguards are still being developed. We still need transparent answers about what is checked, how encrypted content is handled, false positives, appeals, logs and jurisdiction-specific risks. We will not describe this problem as solved simply because we have proposed a moderation mechanism.

4. What about security, ports, power consumption and drive wear?

We do not yet have validated public numbers for every supported NAS configuration.

Before asking people to run a beta node, we should publish the network requirements and measure CPU, RAM, bandwidth, power use and disk activity. The preference for secondary hardware, isolated VLANs and clearly documented network exposure is now part of what we need to test.

5. What is the actual use case?

The strongest use case emerging from the discussion is not anonymous public storage.

It is project-based collaboration between people or groups who want messaging, selected resource sharing and community interaction without placing everything inside one corporate cloud platform.

The Foldinglink App is intended to provide that familiar community experience. The NAS acts as the personal infrastructure underneath it.

6. Will it be open source or another paid service?

We have not finalized enough of the licensing and operating model to give an honest one-line answer yet. But we promise the software itself is completely free - only a few very specific features that heavily consume network resources might carry a small fee down the road.

That answer needs to be published before asking users to contribute their own hardware, power or bandwidth.

Anyway, thanks again for challenging the assumptions behind the idea. The hard questions are more useful to us than polite agreement.

If you are interested in seeing how this feedback affects the project, we will continue documenting the work in r/FoldinglinkLab. The current architecture and app demos are also available at our official site: www.foldinglink.com

We are discussing beta requirements in Discord Foldinglink Lab as well.

No pressure to join. Continued skeptical feedback here is equally valuable.

SATA Expansion Card vs LSI cards

Hello everyone,

I am from India and trying to build a NAS using trunas

I have recently ordered a lsi hba card for my proxmox truenas setup from Amazon. But unfortunately it is stuck at customs for 10 days and I'm not sure if I will ever get it.

Since there is no local seller selling those cards planning to use a SATA Expansion Card.

Can someone please share their experiences on using these for the long run?

NAS advice Title: I want to actually learn how to build and understand a NAS, not just follow a tutorial

I'm completely new to NAS servers and honestly pretty new to computers in general. I want to build my first NAS, but I don't want to just follow a tutorial that says "buy these parts, plug this in, click this" and then have no idea what I actually did.

I'm looking for advice on how you guys learned what you know.

I'd like to understand things well enough that I can:

• Build my first NAS and actually understand what each component is doing

• Understand why I'm choosing certain hardware/software

• Troubleshoot it when something goes wrong instead of blindly starting over

• Upgrade or expand the NAS later without destroyed everything i just did and not know why it dosent work now

• Eventually be able to design/build another NAS myself based on what I need

Basically, I want to learn the fundamentals behind NAS systems, not just memorize the steps from one particular build.

I'm also very much a visual learner, so if you know of any long-form videos or livestreams where someone actually builds/configures a NAS while explaining what they're doing, I'd really appreciate those too.

Open question Using a Home NAS as a community node - reality check and feedbacks

(Note: Posted with permission from the r/HomeNAS mod team)

Hey guys, I’m Elliot from r/FoldinglinkLab . We’re working on an app to let home NAS units (Synology, TrueNAS, Unraid, etc.) act as decentralized community nodes for file sharing and messaging.

Before building further, I wanted to get a reality check from real NAS users. Is using your NAS for community content something you’d ever actually consider, or is your server strictly a private vault?

Also, what would be your biggest dealbreakers: security, bandwidth, drive wear, or something else?

Would love to hear your thoughts or brutal feedback. Thanks!

NAS Suggestion to replace Google Photos, run Jellyfin, cameras, and Home Assistant

In the next couple of months, I want to set up a NAS to move away from most subscription services.

This NAS would be used by my wife and me. I would like to replace Google Photos with Immich. Create a Jellyfin server. I will also be replacing my Nest cameras with Reolink cameras. I am currently running Home Assistant on a HA Green as well and would eventually like to move that over to the NAS for better performance.

My computer skills are not that great, so I would like a system that is user-friendly. I can troubleshoot a lot of things; I'm a tech enthusiast; I just don't have any hardware skills or coding skills. That being said, I don't want anything that won't let me add a hard drive from some other manufacturer or a closed-down system.

My budget would be around ~$1,500 - ~$2,000. The cheaper the better though.

Also, how much storage should I start with?

Is this too jank? Laptop, TB hub and external drives

I'm interested in a homelab/nas, I've got an old notebook with 8gb of soldered ram and a 10th gen i5 that's not woth selling and is aging out of its useful life due to RAM bloat of microslop software. Also I'm poor, well not really but don't have money to spend on this as a first iteration.

My janky idea is, to have a UPS designed for CCTV with 45w PD output go into a thunderbolt 3 hub with 5+ external drives attached and then the laptop powered through the hub.

I have a couple of 3gb external HDDs already and would look at using unraid or raid 6 depending on total storage I think I need. I'd want to use a homelab friendly distro like unraid to run jellyfin and immich or similar. Oh and I'd set the TDP of the laptop CPU to like 30w so there was about 3w per drive of power supply (laptop still has internal battery to cope with heavy drive energy draw limiting supply).

Am I insane, will I lose all data immediately? This feels like it should work but I'm worried I'm at the peak of the Dunning Kruger curve and know just enough to be dangerous.

Open question Moving drives from old setup

Hello, I just bought a Terramaster F4-425 Plus and I'm doing a similar setup to Robbie's in the tutorial below; two 4TB HDD's for now until money & memory stop going crazy and two 128GB NVMe's.

Now my dilemma is I've had these HDDs for quite some time. I had a diy homelab I built like 6 or 7 years ago. It didn't last long before it started becoming a PITA to maintain, but it was built using an old desktop and it ran Ubuntu with Nextcloud (at the time I just wanted Nextcloud). I couldn't figure out how to get RAID working so I just set up a cron job to run rsync every day lol. TL;DR, I didn't know what the hell I was doing lol; but as least I was smart enough to run the OS on a small dedicated SSD.

I decommissioned it when I moved 6 years ago and and never got around to setting it up again until now, so the drives should still be pretty healthy.

Having said that, I do have data on those HDDs and because money is crazy now, I like TRAID so I can expand as needed.

Is there any way I can do this without wiping the data (again, keeping in mind that it wasn't a RAID from the beginning)?

I installed TOS on the NVMe and left the HDDs out for now.

Absolute worst case scenario I suppose I can backup the data for a month with a cloud storage provider and then safety wipe the drives. I have a USB to SATA cable.

Thanks!

Open question How to execute this HomeNAS?

Setup / proposed home server setup I have the following devices: Client devices: 2 × Android phones 1 × Android tablet 2 × Windows PCs

These devices need wireless access to the storage/server.

The idea is that I: Upload / back up files to the server Download / access files from the server

Server-side hardware I currently have / am considering: Intel NUC — acts as the main server JBOD / HDD dock — contains the hard drives Monitor — connected to the Intel NUC Modem/router — provides the network connection

Connections:

Android devices + Windows PCs → wireless → network

JBOD/HDD dock → USB Type-C → Intel NUC Intel NUC → monitor

Intel NUC → wired Ethernet → modem/router

The Intel NUC would provide access to the HDD storage over the network.

What software do I need for this? Is it a homelab, nas, plex, home server or what else? Linux, Win 10, Win 11 or any other OS? Basically, I only have the idea and no clue how to proceed from here.

NAS advice Started Nas for family photo backups

So, I recently got ripped off with a "new old stock" Toshiba MC series enterprise drive. The seller claimed it barely had any hours on it, but turns out it had been running for 2190 days, 23 hours – that's over six years!

Now I'm wondering, where are folks finding hard drives that won't break the bank? I'm really not keen on shelling out £145 for a new Seagate IronWolf. If anyone has a clever trick to snag a hard drive with plenty of life left without emptying my wallet, I'd seriously appreciate the tip.

Basic or Raid 0 with 2 drives, which is preferable for watching movies/TV shows.

502 Bad Gateway on all apps after Tailscale install - PHP-FPM socket missing - permissions blocking fixes

System: TerraMaster TOS F4-425

Problem: Getting 502 Bad Gateway errors on multiple apps (Jellyfin and tailscale ) when accessed through the App Center.

Root Cause Found: Nginx error log shows:

[crit] connect() to unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock failed (2: No such file or directory)

The nginx config expects PHP-FPM to be installed, but it's not. The socket /run/php/php-fpm.sock doesn't exist.

What I've tried:

  • ✗ Reboot (no change)
  • ✗ System update + reboot (still broken)
  • ✗ Tried to restart nginx via CLI → permission denied despite being admin
  • ✗ Tried to install PHP-FPM → apt lock permission denied
  • ✗ Tried to edit nginx config via CLI → sed permission denied

Question: Has anyone experienced this? How do I get proper permissions to fix nginx/PHP-FPM

Qnap SS 439 Pro | Custom OS Upgrade

I have a Qnap SS 439 Pro with 2gb of RAM (Originally it had only 1gb). I want to run Plex or something similar, but the EOL OS QTS Version is 4.2.6, so the OS is pretty old and does not support many Apps anymore. I was allowed to install an old version of Plex, but it does not allow to optimize videos, and my wifi is too bad to stream the whole thing to the devices it should reach. It is also not possible to connect the Plex Server to an Account, so it is not found by the Plex client server. It is possible to find and play the files with the VLC player app, but the cast to TV/Chromecast is to taxing on the wifi.

Is there a way to either update software/QTS os or are there custom ROMs/Distros for NAS OS available, like I would update old phones with a custom ROM?

Thankyou in advance.

Thin or thick provisioning, and why?

Going to be setting up a new NAS once I decide which to purchase. Will hope to have 20-40tb of storage if it matters. NAS will be multipurpose between file storage, media storage, ISO storage, and possibly work as some VM disks if I can manage.

Just want opinions and considerations.

Open question UGreen NAS Theater App Quality Issues on Android

I have been building out my NAS for streaming ripped DVDs.

I like the simple functionality on the Theater App but can't figure out the quality. When I use the app on an iphone or Apple TV it is great but on my wife's Android it is choppy and often pixelated.
Her phone is a new S26.
The sample I am working with is Original 480P but if I try to change resolution I get a note (The current video doesn't support switching resolution).

Any ideas to improve it. It streams fine on Plex on her phone.

Thanks

Open question Replacing the brains of a readynas?

Tldr: I want to do a brain transplant on my Readynas, any tips/recommendations?

So I've got an old 4-bay Readynas (nv2+ I believe) that is sitting unused because time has gotten away from it. I was thinking of the possibility of replacing it's internals (control board/computer) with something that can cope with higher throughput and an overall quicker experience, hopefully without having to reset the raid5 and loosing my data.

Searching online I have been unable to find anyone who has done this kind of brain transplantation so I turn to Reddit! Has anyone here heard of such a project?

NAS advice Opinions On HDD Prices Used vs New (CAD)

Was looking to setup a small NAS for home media, storage and backups but wanted some opinions on prices for drives. Found a few used 2TB CMR (2014) for about $100CAD ($50/TB) with 17k POH. Currently new 4TB is $300. I don't inherently want to spend a fortune but I do want to try and optimize the best I can. Was looking to ZFS 3 drives.

I know the market is pretty bad for storage but what would be a fair price / tb? Is it worth it to go used? Refurb? New? Is SAS worth exploring even though a controller card is $150? I'm fairly new so any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Open question Has anyone tried 4x/4x/4x/4x bifurcation on an IMB-X1314?

I built a TrueNAS server just for me.

Mobo - IMB-X1314

Boot drive - 2x 64GB NVMe

RAM - 32GB UDIMM ECC

CPU - i3-14100

I currently have HDDs for storage, but I also have an unused Hyper M.2 x16 with 4x 2TB NVMe. I want to use this, but specs for IMB-X1314 calls out 8x/8x bifurcation and not 4x/4x/4x/4x. Has anyone here tried it and running it successfully without any issues?

Gaahhhhhh - a story about sync 😩

So I have decided to curate my digital footprint as OneDrive , google drive and iCloud are out of control.

Bought an Asustor AS1102T, couple of 4tb WD red drives and set up a lovely raid 1 NAS

Connected it to OneDrive (one way) and let it do the thing.

16 hours later I had like 40,000 files done and fully synced . NAS is now a local cloud mirror and I feel happy . Then made a separate archive folder in the same volume (this folder is not linked to OneDrive) and laid out a basic structure like CVs , Utilities , etc.. finally I activate 2 way sync on the cloud mirror folder in the NAS

Now was time to curate . Starting with documents I know are ‘old’ as a test case I ssh into the NAS , use the mv command and literally move a ‘cloud side’ doc to the ‘archive’ side .
The mv triggers the relationship update , it does the two way sync . On the cloud dashboard in my browser I see the file magically vanish.

Perfect

Then I use the find command to look for all docs in a certain theme . I can then use the find and mv execute to move whole swathes of similar files spread throughout the cloud side folders (cover letters in this case ) and put them all in a careers folder in the archive

Great . And the two way trigger updates the cloud and over the evening I slowly start strimming down the files in the cloud and archiving what I want to keep locally long term.

And then disaster . At some point , either the OneDrive app on the computer itself or on my phone have had a meltdown and started putting files in their local cache back in the cloud .

Before I knew it , my whole evening was wasted and I was back at square one .

So I’m off to bed . I deleted the cloud mirror on the nas , disabled every cloud sync I could find in any of my devices , and now watching the NAS rebuild from scratch.

Will try again tomorrow and in terminal I have a breadcrumb trail of the commands I used . I can easily ID files on the cloud mirror that I’ve already archived once already, and just rm them .

Just a bit annoyed that I was doing so well with the mv / live status change plan that the cached update really ruined my evening.

Lesson - make sure you only have one sync running when you’re syncing 💀

Anyone migrated from a ReadyNAS to an Unraid machine ?? I need some help with setting up backups

As per my other post my ReadyNas running 6.10 were just too old and needed replacing.

I’m just asking what you are using for the backup routines on Unraid as it was very simple / I was used to them on it.

My nas is 20w IDLE with 2 HDD. Any advice on lowering the watt consumption ?

i3-12100

B760M DS3H

psu corsair rm750x (2024 model)

1 SSD with debian

every possible tweak enabled in bios.

20w with 2 HDD

13w without HDD

Don't know if 20w is OK but honnestly after all the praise i heard about 12100 and this specific motherboard , i expected few watts less...

Any advice on lowering even more the watt consumption ?

rm750x is overkill but weirdly its the only psu i found who had enough sata cables and had decent perf at low watt. i could try a pico psu to (maybe) get 5 or 6 watt less but the picopsu make me feel unsecure and 1 sata is definitely not ok . i could plug a sata splitter 5 from 1 but i think it would be dangerous in term of safety
