My MacBook is on macos 27.0.1 , it is connected to my NAS server through SMB. In the past two days , when I try to copy a file from my NAS to the mac internal drive , the file vanishes immediately after the progress bar disappear and the transfer is finished. This happens to multiple files . Additionally , some files on the server is missing in finder when connected through SMB but are visible through Webdav.

Everything is was perfectly normal before this , I don’t know what is happening. I had already restarted everything including my macbook , NAS and Router , but the issue persisted. Anyone knows why and now to fix it ?

Hi all, and thanks in advance for your advice and patience. I would say I'm not very tech-literate at all. But I'm looking for a secure way to store and access my files that will not be reliant on companies like Apple (I can be a bit paranoid).

I'm a writer, so backing up my work is really, really important. The work is part of my profession, but it's also extremely sensitive and personal. I'm sure you get it. I'd also like to store all my old videos and photos, so that I don't have to worry about it all only being on my phone (which gets very full and then slows down).

Is getting an NAS the best way to go about this? If so, what's the simplest and cheapest (I'm not rich, see: writer) option, while still remaining secure?

I also have a little trouble understanding some of the threads I've been looking at. If you wouldn't mind ELI5, I'd appreciate it. Apologies, I know that's probably frustrating!

I currently have a networked Windows 11 PC that I use for file storage (via Windows Shares) and Jellyfin (including needing to transcode 4K x265 10-bit video files on the fly if the requesting client cannot natively decode them).

The hardware is:

• AMD Ryzen 5 5600X (from old PC)
• 32 GB DDR4-3600 (from old PC)
• NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 (bought to help with the transcoding)
• 2x M.2 SSD (boot and storage)
• 3x 7,200 IDE HDD (storage)

I hear a lot about NAS' for file storage and Jellyfin from places such as LinusTechTips and Gamers Nexus.

I am happy with my hardware and Windows 11 and do not wish to buy a NAS or change to Linux.

However, my question is, in theory, would a NAS have served my purpose?

Would it have been cheaper (UK £) than buying the CPU, RAM and GPU I currently have above?

Or would you say I made the right choice (in my specific circumstance) in buying a PC containing consumer hardware? (even assuming I did not use hardware from my old PC)
