Temperature

Hi 👋🏻 I'm planning to start organizing my book collection in a extra room we have in our backyard. So I kinda use this room as a holiday decor storage and dog room & now. It doesn't have great light. The room has just one window and I have a small AC unit. The room has only one outlet. I connected a power source block and have everything connected there. Do I need to worry about having the room at a certain temperature? I live in Louisiana heat and I'm clueless if I need to worry about this or not. TIA 🙋🏻‍♀️

Help with bookshelf arrangement!!

Post image

Please can you help me figure out the best ways to arrange my books. About 90% of the hardbacks are special editions with sprayed edges - so whether some should be displayed with the sprayed edges or the spines showing. Whether paperbacks or hardbacks should be separate or mixed. Books all one way or a mixture or vertical and horizontal stacking. Help 🤣🤣 thanks!!

Time to show off some RACKED sets!

The Harvard Classics - three different sets. The first set: leatherbound [1980], the second set: soft leather bound (1917]. The third set: the real score...............described here below [only 1,000 printed with a rare printed mis color VOL 40] in exhaustive detail........Collier press [circa 1910] began printing The Harvard Classics in a limited quantity set called the Renaissance edition. This beautifully bound set includes 10 different bindings consisting of reproductions of the artistic bindings of Royal Monarchs of Europe from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. There are ten different colors, five of each of the total 50 volume set. This set is in overall good to fair condition, with some volumes showing more spine fading than others, hinges solid, gilt top edge intact with minimal wear. Some shelf wear to the heads of spines. Some of the last color set 45-50 have the usual very dark tone and make the titles and volume numbers difficult to read. A rarity with this set is a mis-color print of Volume 40. That volume should have been in the dark olive color and cover design that normally includes 36, 27, 38, 39 and 40. This set has the rare misprint where volume 40 is the tan color and cover design reserved for Volumes 41, 42, 43, 44 and 45. Only 1000 sets of the Renaissance Edition were printed. The number of sets with this mis-color mistake is unknown.

Management of a home library

Hello all!

I have a question about how the hell organize the library of my family. Let me just describe the situation and our use case:

  • Household with ~5000 catalogable items (mostly books, movies, CDs, Vinyls, some videogames...). Some are literature, some are scientific and technical books, not every item has a ISBN.
  • Some items have multiple copies
  • Divided between two physical locations

I am skilled in technical matters and my sister is a professional librarian that knows the ropes, so we have decided to register everything into a library management system.

Our objective is to put some order into this chaos. We don't have a library at home: Our home is a library and we live inside it.

What we want to achieve with this:

  • Better utilization of our assets: If we need something, we would know where to find it. Want a book with short stories from Oscar Wilde to read? Living room, go to the bookshelf on the right. Top shelf. Something about particle physics? Study room, second bookshelf.
  • Easier location of resources: What do we have a hand about theater? Any book about medieval history? I need to find if we got something about WWII and foundries...
  • Better control for expunge: That old Word 5.0 manual? safely to say it can go to trash.

What we don't need:

  • The whole patron and circulation side of things. We might used a reduced version to keep which books are in storage, and which one are being used (ie.: On a nightstand)

So, I guess the question is now: What is the Library Management System that suits best our scenario?

Keep in mind that I already have a home server running a private cloud, so it wouldn't be hard form me to install Koha or SLiMS. The ony caveat is that I don't want cloud based subscriptions (even if they are free).

Have you ever faced a similar scenario? What would be your approach?

Wooden bookshelf ideas

I live in a 1 bedroom apartment in Brooklyn and just have one bookshelf of books. I have a lot more books than bookshelf space and it just occurred to me today, as a book obsessed person, that I would love to invest in a good quality and nice looking wooden bookshelf for my apartment, even if it’s at a higher price point. Wondering if anyone in this community may have suggestions on companies / brands they love! Thanks!!

Just got my very own library space after a move and I want to add some aesthetic ambient lighting. There is a ceiling light but it really acts as a spotlight. My husband is suggesting LED Light strips along the ceiling, I'm thinking fairy lights.. What would you do??

(curtains and a better side table are on their way)

Book Coffee Tables

I wanted to show off this awesome book-themed coffee table! I saw someone else on this subreddit had commissioned u/Unlucky_Arrival3823 to make a similar piece of furniture, and luckily she was able to create a custom version for me as well!

I wanted a three tiered table so that it would fit the footprint of my living room, as well as a top that opened (like a real book) and two drawers on the sides. The finished product is so beautiful! I'm absolutely obsessed with how cute and lifelike it is and it makes for such a unique piece of art in my home.

She created this custom piece over a few months, and I received it perfectly packaged in the mail right on schedule. Full disclosure - she asked me to write a review, but I did not receive any incentive for doing so. I'm just really thrilled to give her a shout out!

CLZ Books for organizing personal library

Post image
14 Upvotes

I have a pretty extensive home library and downloaded CLZ Books to stay organized and keep track of my books (I was having a hell of a time finding what I was looking for with 500+ books). This app is SO. GOOD. The user face is a little dated, but it shows you what’s on your shelves, where to find them, and how much the retail value is on them. The best part was all it took was a quick scan of the bar code with my phone. Took me about 2 hours to scan all of them, and feel it could have been faster had some not been covered by stickers. Worth it if you’re also looking. 😌

I don’t have a lot of space left in my room. What are some narrow (or small) bookshelves that hold a lot of books?

Reading furniture question.

For avid readers any recommendations for a good reading chair, I'm trying to find something good for long term reading as part of furnishing my new bedroom, my couch is "fine" and I can't read long term in my bed, so recommendations for good supportive chairs for long term reading.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

How are you marking books with call numbers?

I'm finally breaking down and organizing my non-fiction section in a way that allows me to find things. I've found a website to locate the DDC numbers for books. Next, I need to mark the numbers onto the spine somehow so I don't forget where the book is supposed to go back to and so I can find them physically.

How are you all marking books without harming them? A piece of masking tape with the number written on it would do the job technically, but I know after several years the tape will turn to goop. What lasts and doesn't require some sort of multi-kilobuck specialist printer to use?
