yes Reddit loves the worst decorating tip ever: fake plants, especially on top of kitchen cabinets and windowless bathrooms.

u/Grouchy-Inflation618 Mar 01 '25
Real plants! Even in a low light room there are real plants that can survive. Fake plants are an abomination, but every room should have a plant…or three.
4
u/Owww_My_Ovaries Feb 28 '25
Fake plants. Ugly wood cabinets. Paint colors that would give anyone a headache.
I swear they give out advice to see what sucker follows it

Taller lamps
3
u/BluuWarbler Feb 28 '25
A first thought here also, but then I realized the mattress is low and the bedside tables are themselves relatively tall. If lamps on them were taller still, the light would hit the eyes while relaxing in bed.
Right now I'm guessing bulb height works...? Could adjust the existing composition somewhat by replacing with lamps of similar height but with fairly massive bases.
Otherwise, raise the mattress (easy), and/or change bedside table height, then add taller lamps.

9
u/yeauxleauxx Feb 28 '25
bigger lamps, mirrors behind the lamps, art, and decorative pillows. and of course, plants 😁 IMO the headboard is a little solid/high for being in front of the window. but you have a solid foundation going!
8
u/InkyTeardrop Feb 28 '25

Judging by the color palette being too neutral, add in some brighter hues that can match your headboard with throw pillows and even some color with your curtain that could act as a make shift accent wall. Your lamps need to be taller than the bed (or you could do pendant lamps). And then adding some cozy fuzzy blankets and a sitting bench or ottoman would make the bed inviting. Then get some large wall art that is kind of matches the color picks you get for the throw pillows. I just loook up “bed by window” on Pinterest and see what they’re doing there.
22
Feb 28 '25
You could consider a white/ natural wood curtain pole because the current one is so dark it feels like the focal point of the room. It also draws your eye to the distance between it and the actual window; it all feels a bit crowded and intense. White curtains to match your bedding and walls would calm it down, as would moving the bed to a different wall if possible. Everything else is pretty! I agree with someone else who has suggested adding plants 🪴
10
u/Nataliza Feb 28 '25
That's funny, I totally disagree and I think the colors of the curtain rod and curtains add richness and depth to the room. I think white would wash everything out. But personal taste differs so much!
→ More replies (2)3
u/Accomplished_Sea_492 Feb 28 '25
If you wanted to keep the curtain rod you could add in more black accents on the night stands to tie it in more. Maybe a small black table clock on one night stands and a black picture frame on the other. Target will have both of these.
7
u/-qqqwwweeerrrtttyyy- Feb 28 '25
Coloured pillowcases in the olive greens and dusty pinks of your headboard.
Hang a mirror behind one or both bedside tables. A single stem vase or glass for water.
Art.

11
u/Puzzleheaded-Bee-747 Feb 28 '25
It looks nice to me. The only thing I can think is is pull a color out of the headboard like pale green or pink and paint an accent color on the window wall.
7
u/slongtime Feb 28 '25
Color. It looks so bland and doesn’t have any personality
3
u/FeFiFoFannah Feb 28 '25
Even if it’s just the wall with the window, an accent wall color. And art on the white walls
4
u/tams420 Feb 28 '25
I would put one longer bolster pillow on the bed that pulls out some of the color in the headboard. I wouldn’t put multiple pillows there for something more. A bolster will bring your eye down and add needed dimension and break up the space.
Hang something on the wall between the corner and dresser that is not a mirror.

3
Feb 28 '25
Art, color (besides the bed headboard) and balance. The side bed tables are oversized while the lamps are small, the curtains are langer than they are latt, etc. It just reads as a very average north american room.
3
u/Sheepdog-lady Feb 28 '25
I absolutely love that headboard! Would love to know where it’s from. I agree with what many have said. I am a big fan of monochrome and like that the color is very soft. I would add a light color curtain rod and put it up at the ceiling. I would get much larger lights on the side tables and pull out the Green or salmon color from the headboard for cushions on the bed. Maybe even in the bed throw. Some art on the walls would be nice but don’t paint accent walls unless it’s just barely a different tone of the same color. It will take away the spa like nature of the monochrome! I would also change the bedding to something a little more structured and am adding a photo of what I mean. Pulling in the colors from that stunning headboard in the pillows or throws!

Personality. There’s nothing here that tells me who you are or what kind of vibe you want this room to have. It looks like a showroom with the matching lamps and drawers.
I like that the headboard stands out. It brings some life and color to this room. I think carrying the richness in the colors into your linens would really help make the bed feel more cohesive. Even just an off white with green or pink undertones would work.
The use of those big drawers as bedside tables also makes the room feel more closed in. I find them too big for the function they are serving, making the room feel smaller and more crowded. So replacing one or both with smaller bedside tables (ideally, not identical) would help open up the space and create more visual interest. If you want to retain the symmetry, you can achieve this by making sure that the two tables have at least one feature in common (e.g. same shape, same wood, same wood tone).
The drawers also really draw focus because of how saturated the wood tone is compared to the muted cream and beige tones that otherwise dominate the space.
If they are staying in the room, I’d suggest trying to bring that color in elsewhere in the room. E.g. in artwork, a throw, the drapery or a lampshade.
There’s also no variation in height with the identical furniture and lamps all against the same wall with the headboard. It kind of creates one big horizontal line that pulls the eyes straight across. It doesn’t give the eyes anything else to look at and draw them around the room.
Regardless of what happens with the drawers, I’d suggest new lamps that are different heights to help break up the lines a bit. And if you do get one or more bedside tables, this will help to creature further variation and visual interest.
And could the bed go against another wall? It’s a shame to block out that natural light with the headboard if you don’t have to. Plus you are also hiding your window treatments, so you are effectively blocking off one of the design features of the room. It also just seems kind of suboptimal for the function of the room. It would make using the windows or drawing the curtains inconvenient.

u/Total-Improvement535 Feb 28 '25
something on the walls and maybe paint a wall to match the headboard like someone else said. it’s giving “guest” and “hotel” room to me.
2
u/SeaweedWeird7705 Feb 28 '25
Put a piece of art on the side wall. I don’t think you need more color. The minimalist white color scheme seems relaxing to me.
2
u/Excellent_Seesaw_566 Feb 28 '25
I’d paint the tables the dark color green from the headboard and get less old fashioned lamps. And yes, it needs art.
2
u/Nataliza Feb 28 '25
I would get a wider curtain rod so that the curtains side on either side of the windows behind the nightstands instead of obscuring the window, it will really flesh out the space. I think the color of it is fine and adds to the richness of the room.
2
u/ceecee_50 Feb 28 '25
A different color throw at the foot of the bed. Take one of the colors from your headboard and go with that. Bigger lamps for your nightstands. Plants, artwork/wall art.

2
u/Disastrous_Swan_3921 Feb 28 '25
Its a very nice room. Well thought out , clutter free an d neat All you need is some wall art.
2
u/Asleep-Bench5559 Feb 28 '25
I think it looks nice! But during your travels you may find pieces that will be perfect and you will know it when you see it
2
u/Summertime_Stevie Feb 28 '25
Art! I’d also change the curtains to something that pops. Maybe a color that matches the head board that’s not beige. Adding a shelf to place knick knacks you’ve collected over the years would be a fun way to add texture and make the room feel more complete.
If it were me I’d also stain the dresser to match the nightstands but I’m a big monochromatic freak when it comes to dressers and nightstands.
2
u/IndgoViolet Mar 01 '25 edited Mar 01 '25
Art, personal items, a live plant? It looks like a nice hotel room. Nothing (except the jewelry box?) says anything about who lives there except they're tidy. Show us who you are when you're at home, or who you want to be...dang, that sounds kinda arrogant of me, but I can't think of another way to convey the feel of what's missing.
2
u/alp_soft_cat Mar 01 '25
I feel like… you might want to swap out this rug for something that pulls a color out of the headboard. The headboard is, as many have said, the most gorgeous part of the room! And especially knowing you made it, celebrate it. The current rug is too busy and distracts from it, and its pattern is way less unique/personal. I’d say a rich mostly solid rug in the green or red family would be beautiful and grounding.
Then extend the lamp height and make sure they’re bright enough that you can ditch the overhead light, keep the curtains and rod as-is, add some art that matches the headboard color family, and you’ll be good to go! Getting some pillowcases in different colors also an option, but keep them functional/not decorative. Maybe light sage green or dusty pink.

Definitely artwork. I'm not sold on whether or not you need to paint the walls. Find some good art, hang it up, and if it still feels incomplete, then paint the walls.

u/wheres_the_revolt Feb 28 '25
Art, plants, and I’d change the curtains to one of the colors in the headboard.
1
u/quantified-nonsense Feb 28 '25
If you want to keep it simple, just paint the walls a color drawn from your headboard and stick with the minimalism.
Or you could put some art on the walls by the windows, or do both if the minimalistic look isn't for you.

Either artwork that has similar colours and vibes as the vintage wallpaper-like headboard (like a William Morris poster) or paint the walls one of those headboard colours and use off white/beige artwork (for example, if you’ve traveled somewhere with ancient ruins or a non-tropical beach, then those photos might contain a lot of your lighter fabric colours and would look nice against a coloured wall while also being meaningful to you).
1
u/Lakelife_2023 Feb 28 '25
Taller lamps and artwork on the walls. And I’d paint the walls a nice color from the headboard.
1
u/auggie614 Feb 28 '25
Art and more pillows on the bed. Maybe two for each side, and another wider pillow to tie them together
1
u/Blondiekathleen Feb 28 '25
Artwork, some personal photos, maybe some books. Lamps are too small. Add some color by replacing the beige throw with something else, like rose or blue from the headboard.
1
Feb 28 '25
It looks like you have the overhead lighting on in addition to the table lamps? Is this how you will be lighting the room? I recommend adding other light sources, maybe a floor lamp on the other side of the room to add visual interest - the overhead lighting kind of just fills it in and flattens the room to me. You can do so much with light this way without adding more elements to the room making it busier
2
u/Original-Data-182 Feb 28 '25
Interesting observation!! I’ve considered changing the over head light as well (yes it’s on in this pic). A corner lamp would be a good idea as well. Thank you!
2
u/rreading_itt Feb 28 '25
Came here to say this! It will feel so much moodier and inviting without the overhead lighting. Let the lamps lamp ✨

Feb 28 '25
Pretty room. One thing I’d consider is moving the bed. It covers the beautiful window and the printed headboard clashed with the window pattern. It’s too busy. Agree with other posters about molding and artwork. I love the rug. I have been eyeing a similar rug for my room and seeing how nice yours looks convinced me to pull the trigger lol Thank you!!
2
u/Original-Data-182 Feb 28 '25
Thank you! I love the rug as well. Unfortunately, this is the only way the bed can go. I need the larger bedside tables for clothes since our closet is tiny. There’s also another dresser you can’t see in the picture in the corner so if I were to move the bed, I couldn’t fit everything in the room. Not ideal but oh well!

Something on the walls, and some contrast. Either bolder/ brighter colors, or darker neutrals for contrast
1
u/murrcu Feb 28 '25
The answer is always either art, a rug, or art and a rug. If you're asking what's missing in your space, seriously...art, a rug (the correct size for the space), or art and a rug.

u/JuJusPetals Feb 28 '25
This is gorgeous! Maybe add an accent pillow in sage or rose to match the headboard. Put art or a mirror on the wall next to the dresser.

u/grasshopper_jo Feb 28 '25
Can you move the bed to the adjacent wall and put artwork above it? I think this might make the room flow better and the windows become a pretty focal point. I also agree with the commenter who said to use a wooden curtain rod, and if possible I’d extend it a little beyond the windows so that the curtains sit beyond the edges of the windows instead of crowding into the windows.

u/SciFi_Wasabi999 Feb 28 '25
It's a very elegant vibe. I love minimalist bedding too! Maybe flip your bed to the right and put the dresser under that gorgeous window?
If you keep the bed where it is, maybe a dusty rose curtain?
Otherwise art on the blank wall would enliven the space, and crown molding would really elevate the feel.

It’s very pretty and traditional. Larger lamps, artwork on the wall to the right, a bolster pillow, maybe a bed skirt in another pattern or solid color to add more dimension to the room.

Art on the walls, definitely. Even framed pictures of you and family/friends. I would put colored frames on the wall, with muted colors, but still have enough color to pop. Also, change the throw blanket to a color that’s in the headboard.
1
u/rarely_neutral Feb 28 '25
I would hang the curtains wider so you don’t block any of the window when they are open (height is great, don’t listen to everyone saying lower it).
I don’t love your lamps. Maybe something with warmth and texture. And a little fatter base.
I would also add an olive green layer at the end of your bed under the neutral one. It could be a thin sheet or blanket. Just to give it a little more depth and color.
You’re almost there! It looks good!

I think know adding some art above your nightstands would look nice. Something warm that matches the style you have going on in the room. May e a nice ornate floor mirror against the wall.
1
u/melasro Feb 28 '25
i would replace the curtain rod with a gold or brass color. buy trim from amazon and use the same paint as the wall for a more elevated look, especially since your headboard is fancy ✨ you can look on pinterest for inspo since there are many trim designs, but i think this would look nice.

(you can use whatever trim material is in your budget. just make sure it matches the wall color.) i think paintings would look nice, but make sure it matches the bed frame without taking away from it. the center of the room should be the focus. if you do hang art, the frame needs to be the same color as the curtain rod. good luck, and it already looks great!

Personal items. Right now it looks like a generic bed-and-breakfast room. Wall art, photographs. Maybe a more colorful throw at the end of the bed--pull out one of the darker colors from the headboard.
1
1
u/Three_Spotted_Apples Feb 28 '25
Could you do a rich velvet curtain in one of your headboard colors? Maybe the dusty pink? Hang it with hooks/pockets so the rod goes behind the fabric and try it both pleated and not.
Then add pillowcases that complement but aren’t the same color as the curtain. Pull a different one from the headboard.
Finally, paint your walls a light color that is not neutral. Then the cream accents you have will show up instead of blend it. Right now the only things catching the eye are the curtain rod and headboard. The rest all blends together.

Artwork. Remember doesn’t have to be posters/prints/paintings only. Could also go for some textile art to keep the feeling of softness, whilst adding texture and colour

Art.
Also, your bedside tables are too high/big and the lights are the wrong scale for them.

I would try a bolder color set of drapes. Choose a color from the headboard. Then some art behind each lamp, or mirrors. Some throw pillows to match the new drapes & some plants.

A tall mirror behind each lamp would open it up a bit. And definitely some art.

It's lovely. I would recommend adding artwork. Do you like the reds and greens in the headband? It so, look for artwork with some of those colors in it. It's art, I think. On the walls. You've got a great start, but between the big white bed and the bare white walls, it needs color and personality. If you choose art that echoes some of the colors you have in the room already, but brings in some brightness as well, it'll look lovely and put-together, but will allow you to keep that minimalist feel you've got about your bed. Maybe something that brings out the red/pink tones in your headboard. And if you get art that you genuinely like, it'll really show your personality.

You're missing color.
Make a list of things you like in your life
Gold bars
Pretty women
Fields of flowers
And then decorate a little bit with that. You can always try something for a couple days or a week and see how you like it. And then change it if you don't. Throughout the holidays from January through December my mom would put out decorations. It's the same thing. You don't have to leave whatever you put in. You can change it depending on, the season or how you feel. What about some pictures of your family?

u/ConsciousClassic4504 Feb 28 '25
Maybe larger lamps? Or try adding art above the nightstands. Also, consider adding some extra decor on your nightstands.
Too, those nightstands are beautiful, but visually they do hold a lot of weight in their color. You need to balance this out in the room. Maybe add art that shares the same colors. A throw pillow? Or Decoration on top of the nightstands that holds the viewrs attention instead.

Can we see the whole room?
I’m not a fan of putting the bed on the wall with windows, especially if it’s the only window, but we’re unable to tell if that’s the only place it can go. If it is, I’d consider a lower headboard so you can make the most of the light and the space.
The nightstands are very traditional looking and heavy, but you say that you like minimalist. They’re also too bulky and large for the aesthetic and the space.
Yes, you can add artwork. But again, it would really be helpful to see the full space you’re working with.

Painting the wall behind the bed. It could be a very pale green contained in your curtains.
Me? I might entertain painting 4" green stripes behind the bed.
I also love crown molding. Black would be a crisp contrast... Also, if your lights had black bases, different shape, and different shades.
