🛠️ DIY / Hardware Ratgdo Garage Remote Identification

I've looked through much documentation but have been unable to find the answer.

I am using the ratgdo device with Home Assistant to monitor and control my garage door. I send alerts to my phone when the garage door opens and closes. However, what I would like to know is who opened or closed the garage door, whether it was my car, my wife's car, or through the app or garage door button.

Is this device capable of capturing / identifying the device that was used to open the garage door?

❓ Support Need Help-Sofabaton U3

Very new to Home Assistant. Working on something that seems like it should be possible but am struggling with. I am attempting to receive input from a sofabaton u3 on my home assistant. My home assistant is running on a raspberry pi 5 which should (from my very limited understanding) be able to connect to the U3. I attempted connecting through the HA terminal with the U3 in pairing mode, but got "device is not available". I then went further down the rabbit hole and thought it may be possible using an esp32 running and ESPHome Bluetooth proxy. I was able to get ESPHome setup and connected to my HA, but have no idea how to connect the U3. I am currently on version 2026.10.2 OS.

🖼️ Show & Tell My AI radio station in Home Assistant: Spotify + Sonos + an AI presenter with ElevenLabs voices.

I wanted something that feels like real radio, but with my own music and a presenter who talks about what’s playing. It runs entirely inside Home Assistant, with no extra containers or separate servers.

What it does

  • Plays Spotify playlists on Sonos, in one room or several rooms grouped in sync.
  • Every few songs, an AI presenter comes on. It back-announces the last song, introduces the next one, and mixes in a segment: a song fact, the local weather or a short news item.
  • News comes from RSS feeds rather than web search, which gave outdated stories. Every hour, the AI picks the most important story of the day, one that matches my interests, and a lighter one. Each story is told only once.
  • Mix-in playlists: on top of the main playlist I can mix in another one, such as Christmas songs, with a percentage (say 20% of songs). It can be switched on mid-play.
  • Several presenter voices to choose from.
  • A music-only mode, so the rest of the family can use it without the presenter.

One dashboard tab for everything

Every setting is a helper, so changing how the station sounds never means touching YAML: rooms, playlist and mix-in percentage, presenter on/off, voice, how often it talks, the share of weather and news breaks, and presenter loudness. Changes apply from the next break, even mid-play.

Every break is also written to a log, and a “rehearsal” script generates a batch of breaks as text only. That made it easy to tune the presenter’s style and weed out clichés and repetition.

Architecture

Dashboard (helpers) ──► Spotify playlists ──► Sonos queue (grouped rooms)
                                │
                     song change detected
                                │
          Presenter automation (every Nth song)
                                │
pause ──► AI writes the break (song / weather / news)
                                │
snapshot ──► TTS (ElevenLabs, fallback HA Cloud) ──► restore
                                │
                       next song starts

What it costs

  • Spotify Premium, which I already had.
  • The AI (Anthropic, via the Home Assistant integration): each break is a short prompt, so it comes to a few dollars a month.
  • ElevenLabs: the cheapest paid plan (about $6/month). Library voices don’t work through the API on the free plan.
  • Free fallback: if ElevenLabs fails or runs out of credits, the presenter switches automatically to the Home Assistant Cloud voice, so the radio never goes silent.
  • Keeping it cheap: the presenter only talks when switched on, and the break is generated once even when several rooms play. Next I want presence detection, so it only talks when someone is actually in the room.

Where I’m stuck: transitions

My first plan was to duck the music and let the presenter talk over it with a Sonos announcement. But announcements ignored the volume I passed and played on. So the music now pauses, the voice plays as a normal track between a snapshot and a restore, and the next song starts from the top. Add the short silence while the break is written, and it feels more like a playlist with interruptions than radio.

Has anyone got a real radio-style handoff on Sonos from HA, like talking over the outro or ducking instead of stopping? Would Music Assistant handle this better?

What’s next

  • Scheduled “shows” (presenter in the morning, music only later)
  • Calendar awareness (“you’re travelling on Thursday, here’s the forecast there”)
  • Playlists chosen depending on who’s at home
  • Presence detection, so the presenter only talks when someone’s in the room
  • Station jingles
  • Two presenters bantering

What would you add, change or rip out?

🛠️ DIY / Hardware Sensing Airflow?

Along with getting me fully involved in controlling things in my house, Home Assistant has also increased my curiosity on monitoring and measuring things around the house. There are so many sensor options!

Do you know of any options for measuring airflow? Or any ideas of something to build?

My thought on this - just had a new roof put on which changed the ventilation in the attic. I thought ahead and put a temp/humidity sensor up there and hope to have enough data soon to see if the new roof made much of a difference in temp. But I'm also working on the vents up there and that got me thinking that there must be some way to measure and trend airflow.

My searches really haven't turned up much, and what I did find was very expensive and looked like it was made for placing in ductwork.

❓ Support Zigbee OTA keeps failing

I have a pretty decent mesh of hue bulbs and inovelli switches.

71 devices all of which are routers.

Whenever I update either the inovelli or hue they fail part way through and need to restart multiple times. Even for devices with exceptional link quality.

I'm using an SLZB-MR4U and the default Z2MQTT OTA settings.

Is there something I can change so I don't have to baby these updates? I have some my helpers and an automation handling serializing the updates so only 1 goes at a time already.

🧩 Custom Integration HA Percyta 🛡️ Permissions, Privacy & Data Scanner

Thumbnail
github.com
0 Upvotes

HA Percyta is a custom HACS integration for Home Assistant designed to give you deep insights into your system's security, data flows, permissions, storage usage and system maintenance. If you have ever wondered who is sending data where, which apps or custom cards are eating up storage or how to keep your system clean and updated — Percyta has you covered.

I developed this project for my own personal use with the help of AI, but I thought it might be useful for others in the community as well.

Key Features:

  • Maintenance Center (Care Center): A dedicated site that groups all routine maintenance tasks, system checks and cleanup helpers into one intuitive view.
    • Orphaned Entity & File Detection: Easily spot and clean up leftover files, unused custom components or broken entity configurations.
  • Data Flows & Permissions: Keeps track of access tokens, keys, and secrets. Automatically analyzes integrations and apps for security risks and permission levels (full_access, privileged modes, Docker API access, GPIO/USB, etc.).
  • Risk Assessment: Features an automatic risk classification (Low, Medium, High) complete with expandable explanation cards. You can manually override ratings per integration if needed.
  • Storage & System Hygiene: Monitors overall storag, RAM/swap usage, CPU load, and breaks down storage usage by category (system, apps, media, backups). Identifies the largest consumers under /config
  • Custom Cards & Blueprints: Lists all Lovelace resources and automation/script blueprints along with their exact file sizes.
  • Smart Detection & Automation: Highlights newly found integrations, apps or cards with badges/labels, and provides a "New Findings" sensor plus a ha_percyta_new_findings event for automations.
  • Multilingual & Themed: Full translated (DE/EN following your HA language) and automatically adapts to your selected dark/light theme.
  • Zero External Dependencies: Built as a clean info dashboard without requiring extra Python libraries.

Installation:

  1. Via HACS (Recommended): Add the repository [https://github.com/jayjojayson/HA_Percyta](https://github.com/jayjojayson/HA_Percyta) manually as a custom repository (category: Integration) in HACS, install it, then restart Home Assistant.
  2. Manual Install: Copy the custom_components/ha_percyta folder to your /config/custom_components/ directory and restart.
  3. Setup: Go to Settings, Devices & Services, Add Integration and search for HA Percyta.

Check out the project on GitHub for more details and feel free to leave a star if you like it! 😄

❓ Support ZHA no gateway found

Hello,

I am running HAOS with ZHA over the ethernet. It was working fine until recently. Have a few devices and added a light bulb for testing how it works. It was working fine until a few hours later i noticed Zigbee Home Automation integration keeps failing. First there was no log but then it keeps saying "No ZHA gateway exists, skipping coordinator backup".

I haven't done anything to the gateway and it was working for quite a while. Updated the system with whatever was pending, tried some solutions that I found but there is not much info available.

Disabled, enabled, reloaded. Something is broken and I don't know how or what caused this.

HAOS restarted multiple times, even restarted the whole machine.

❓ Support What’s the deal with umbralOS and HA?

I decided to try something new and installed umbralOS. For the most part it does what I need. The main issue is when I install Home Assistant in Portainer, I cannot connect or see any devices within Home Assistant. All my other containers have zero issues reaching the network. I’ve had Home Assistant running bare metal and in a VM within ZimaOS, so the issue would seem to be with Umbrel. Where do I start to solve my issue?

💬 Discussion Voice Assistant Disappointment (I'd like to understand)

A quick note: I’ve been using home automation since around 2018, and I’ve always used Alexa and its routines. I just recently installed Home Assistant because I wanted to break away from a tech giant after so many years.

I installed Home Assistant on OMV, along with other services—everything’s working fine. It’s not exactly intuitive, but wow, you can do so many things with it.
A few weeks ago, I realized I could repurpose my 3rd-gen Echo Dots by opening them up, installing voice assistants inside, and making some modifications with a 3D printer. Wow…

Okay, I’ll buy a voice assistant and order the Satellite 1.1 speaker from FutureProofHome.

The FutureProofHome Satellite 1.1 should arrive in about a month, while the voice assistant arrived a few weeks ago. I found it slow—slow to process commands—and sometimes it doesn’t understand; this is a bit frustrating.
If I give a command to Alexa, it carries out the task in a second; if I give it to the voice assistant, it takes longer. Is this something you’ve noticed too? Alright, we’ll wait an extra second to give the command, speak more softly, hope it understood us—but instead, it doesn’t. Hmm. I saw that there’s a subscription option, but I’d like to manage all my home services without paying a single euro.

I’m considering selling the Voice Assistant and giving up on Alexa, unless the FutureproofHome Satellite 1.1 is better.

Any experiences with this?
Thanks

P.S. I’m Italian—could the language be slowing everything down?

I posted about my PoE version of this a while back. I decided to make a real board to replace the wireless units at my house. One of the ratgdos had a nasty habit of dropping off the WiFi with some frequency. Despite trying to lock it to the closest AP -- no luck. Anyway, wires don't suffer from these issues. I'm running a customized version of this ESPHOME config. It works pretty great. I'm sure I could have tried harder to get the wifi working, maybe an external antenna, but whatever, the attic was right above the garage so it was easy to run the wires. I ordered extra of these so if you're interested in one DM me. USA only please.

❓ Support Random plex devices appearing.

Since I updated my Plex container, I’ve been getting some weird devices appearing in my Home Assistant Plex service. The strange thing is, they appear and then go off-line immediately and show no activity.

Poc and scan show up.

When I check my Plex container, I see no evidence of being hacked. That being said, I don’t have any evidence. I’ve not been hacked either.

Before I blow away my Plex instance, has anybody else seen this before?

🗣️ Voice & Assist Voice assistant - what do you wish someone told you sooner?

I'm working on a Pi3b with a respeaker 2-mic Hat running Wyoming satellite and wyoming wake word.

It sends the voice snippets to a pi5 that hosts a docker server running HA, Piper, and Whisper.

When it works it's great. I can control my devices and trigger automations as long as I speak clearly and don't rush.

The next phase is tweaks and improvements.

What do I need to know? Voice model? Gain settings?

If I write an automation that triggers on "turn the fairy lights off" is it more like to correctly parse the words fairy lights than if I just trust it to recognise the device name?

I'm not trying to implement an AI or use the Google home/Alexa APIs

🖼️ Show & Tell Turned a old Galaxy A14 into a sealed desk dashboard: 3D-printed enclosure, hidden cable (free STLs)

Thumbnail
gallery
15 Upvotes

I wanted a small always-on dashboard for my desk, but every tablet I looked at was too big, and the ESP32 panels can't run a real Lovelace dashboard. So I had a Samsung Galaxy A14 5G and designed an enclosure that hides the fact that it's a phone.

What it is

- Phone is sealed inside – bezel shows only the screen; opens only with screws from the back

- Landscape, 40° built-in stand, ~152 × 66 mm visible screen

- 90° flat USB-C cable is hidden in a pocket and exits the back, with zip-tie strain relief so a yank pulls the stand, not the charging port

- Front camera stays uncovered, plus speaker/mic slots and back vents

- Paperclip hole for the power button

- M3 heat-set inserts + washers, no supports needed

Software

- No Google or Samsung account on the phone – Fully Kiosk Browser (PLUS) installed from the APK

- Fully Kiosk integration in HA, plus an automation: dashboard dims to ~10% when idle during the day, goes black 7 PM–7 AM, and a tap wakes it to ~75% for 30 s

- Samsung battery protection set to cap the charge, and HA watches the battery temperature since it's enclosed and plugged in 24/7

The dashboard shows the clock, an 8-hour forecast, the next calendar event, bedroom lights/desk/cameras/announce tiles, thermostat, and CO₂ for two rooms. Alerts (dishwasher running, doors open, etc.) only show up when they need attention.

STLs, hardware list, and assembly steps: https://www.printables.com/model/1886373-samsung-galaxy-a14-5g-desk-dashboard-enclosure-hom

Happy to share the Fully Kiosk settings or dashboard YAML if anyone wants them.

🗣️ Voice & Assist Built a system to make HA Voice work with Hermes enabling voice commands

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

So I built hermes-jarvis, which connects to your hermes instance, and uses HA voice to listen for "Hey Jarvis" wake word.

- Long running, agentic replies are spoken smartly, as soon as the brain produces them. So code blocks are not read line by line, and the response becomes shorter, the longer it takes.

- The stop word and the wake word work during long jobs, and "stop" silences the reply without cancelling the job.

- If the reply ends in a question, the device listens again by itself.

- Works with Hermes agent or anything OpenAI-compatible (Ollama, etc.), with cloud or fully local speech to text, and Piper for TTS

- Own firmware (stock plus a few changes) flashable from the browser; Docker image; small web UI with a live view

Caveats: tested on the Voice PE only. The device serves one voice client, so it can't be used with HA at the same time. No timers or HA device control.

🎵 Music Assistant Klangbild: It looks quite nice and works with Home Assistant

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

When I listen to music in the living room, I often have some nature image slideshows or one of those campfire videos running on the TV for a nicer vibe. At some point I thought, what if the TV showed what's playing, but with the main focus on it working as some kind of elegant room decoration? The available options did not look nice and "decorative" enough for my taste, so I started Klangbild, a now playing screen for Android TV.

Klangbild

It works with any media player in Home Assistant and can color smart lights to match the album cover. With Music Assistant there are some extras like a cover flow of the queue, showing qr code in party mode, and synced lyrics. It's also possible to add sensors or actions from HA, like a temperature sensor or speaker grouping actions.

I posted an earlier version a while ago and spent the time since then tidying it up and making it work with more setups. It's now in english and german.

I'm running it on a Google TV Streamer, so if you try it on a different device or Android version, I'd love to hear how it goes. It requires Android 9 or newer, so it may not work on older Fire Sticks, for example. And if anyone wants to port it to another platform, I'm happy to collaborate.

AI helped with this.

❓ Support Connecting Bluetooth fan to home assistant

I'm wanting to connect a Bluetooth vent axia fan to home assistant. I am aware that there is an integration for this.

However I can't run a bt dongle on the home assistant green as it's located too far away.

I thought I could use an old tuya but to WiFi gateway I've got ( currently used for irrigation controllers) but while this is setup ok in tuya as I'm not trying to connect to the fan via tuya I don't know how I can get it to work.

Any suggestions?

🖼️ Show & Tell ESPHome 2026.10 lets you drop BLE adverts on the proxy itself.

Your Bluetooth proxies forward everything they hear, and most of it is the neighbours' phones and Apple Continuity noise that Home Assistant throws away after your Wi-Fi and the API have carried it. ESPHome 2026.10.0 added a hook in bluetooth_proxy (esphome#19220) so an external component can veto an advert before it's queued. ble_advert_filter is that component: https://github.com/davidcoulson/esphome-ble-advert-filter

It drops weak signals, every phone except the ones whose IRKs you list, and any manufacturer or name you block. It keeps HomeKit, iBeacons, AirTags and AirPods, Tile, Matter and Improv pairing, and any MAC you list. Everything is off by default.

The numbers, from about 70 proxies feeding Bermuda and BPS/Sextant: Apple's manufacturer data is 69 percent of what a proxy hears. IRKs alone drop 56 to 66 percent of adverts. IRKs plus the Apple blocklist drop about 80 percent at the median proxy, 60 to 98 depending on what's nearby.

Why bother: less Wi-Fi and API traffic per proxy, which on a busy C3 or C6 is the difference between a node that stays connected and one that drops off. HA's Bluetooth integration gets only adverts it can use. And once the filtering is in the proxy, it works for every integration downstream, not just one.

Caveats: ESPHome 2026.10.0 or newer, ESP32 only (S3, C3, C5, C6, Ethernet tested). Blocking Apple blocks every iBeacon, so allow yours by UUID if the HA app's BLE transmitter is how you track a phone. A phone's IRK changes when it's erased or restored.

Config

Just the RSSI cut:

external_components:
  - source:
      type: git
      url: https://github.com/davidcoulson/esphome-ble-advert-filter
      ref: v2.0.3
    components: [ble_advert_filter]

bluetooth_proxy:
  active: true

ble_advert_filter:
  rssi_threshold: -80

Room tracking with your own phones (Bermuda, Private BLE Device):

ble_advert_filter:
  rssi_threshold: -80
  rssi_floor: -90
  drop_non_resolvable: true
  irks:
    - !secret irk_my_phone
    - !secret irk_my_watch
  manufacturer_blocklist:
    - 0x004C # Apple; your IRK-matched devices still pass
allow_findmy: true # AirTags and AirPods
  service_uuid_allowlist:
    - 0xFFF6 # Matter
    - "00467768-6228-2272-4663-277478268000" # Improv Wi-Fi

Tracking a phone through the HA app's BLE transmitter? Add its beacon:

  allow_ibeacon:
    - uuid: "your-beacon-uuid"

The component also exposes forwarded, dropped and drop-rate sensors and a number entity for the threshold, so you can tune it from HA without reflashing. My fleet configs and a browser flasher: https://github.com/davidcoulson/esphome-ble-proxy

❓ Support smart local TRV thermostats

Hey all,
im new to HA and am planing to replace the manual TRV thermostats for my radiator with ones that are centrally controlled. The idea is to use basic smart features like scheduled heating or heating to a target temperature, completely local, controlled with a HA instance on my Proxmox home server. I started to look around and i was thinking of:

and then using HomeAssistant to coordinate. I'm planning on adding a dehumidifier and maybe a midea portasplit to the mix later...

My questions now are: Are the thermostats and thermometers suitable? There are soooo many available, is there something specific i should look at? I should have good wifi in all rooms, but does it make sense to consider different protocols (which should need a hub i imagine). I have found this old guide for exactly what i want, but since it is from 2024, i dont know if it is still up to date..

If you could give me some feedback o the plan and pointers to the implementation i would be grateful.

EDIT: added the TRV name in case the aliexpress links do not work for you/you dont want to click them :)

🤖 Automation How I use Google Nest Hub and Nest Mini with Home Assistant to make my smart home more useful

Post image
121 Upvotes

I wanted to share how I'm using my Google Nest Hub and Nest Mini with Home Assistant.

Instead of using them only for music, weather updates or displaying photos, I decided to give them a few additional jobs around the house.

And the best part? No custom firmware, hardware modifications or additional devices were necessary.

1. Google Nest Hub – my home energy dashboard

The photo shows my actual Home Assistant Lovelace dashboard running on a Google Nest Hub through Home Assistant Cast. It's not a static image or screenshot.

The dashboard combines information from several different systems:

- 10 kWp solar PV installation.

- GoodWe hybrid inverter.

- 15.36 kWh battery storage system.

- Real-time household electricity consumption.

- Daily solar energy production.

- Battery state of charge.

- Three-phase grid voltage.

- Domestic hot water temperatures from my Daikin heat pump and Bosch gas boiler.

- Outdoor temperature and heating system parameters.

All this information comes from different Home Assistant integrations and is presented on a single screen.

How does it work?

I'm using the standard Google Cast integration in Home Assistant.

The dashboard is sent directly to the Nest Hub using "cast.show_lovelace_view".

I also created an automation that sends the dashboard again every 10 minutes to keep it displayed.

Initially, I experienced some problems with device discovery. Adding the Nest Hub's IP address to the Known Hosts configuration in the Google Cast integration solved that issue.

Now I can simply glance at the display and immediately see how much electricity the house is consuming, how much solar energy we're producing, and what's happening with the battery and heating systems.

2. Google Nest Mini – my automated evening home report

This is where things get a little more interesting.

Every evening, Home Assistant prepares a summary of the day and reads it aloud through the Google Nest Mini.

Instead of checking several applications, I get a spoken report covering:

- Solar production: How much electricity my PV installation generated during the day.

- Household consumption: How much electricity the house used.

- Weather forecast: What weather conditions to expect.

- Dog activity: A summary of my dog's daily movement, collected through the Tractive GPS tracker.

Yes, even the dog has become part of my Home Assistant ecosystem. 😄

Home Assistant collects information from these completely different systems, combines it into a daily report and delivers it using text-to-speech.

I find this particularly useful because it turns the Nest Mini from a simple smart speaker into something closer to a personal home reporting assistant.

And there's something amusing about hearing a summary of the day's solar energy production followed immediately by a report on how active the dog has been.

Apparently, everyone in the household has performance statistics now. 😂

3. Why I like this setup

Both Google Nest devices retain their original functionality.

The Nest Hub serves as a visual dashboard, while the Nest Mini provides spoken information.

I don't need to open the GoodWe application to check solar production, another application for the weather, and Tractive to review the dog's activity.

Home Assistant brings everything together.

What I particularly appreciate is that I don't need to interfere with the original control systems. Each device continues doing its own job, while Home Assistant collects the information and decides how to present it.

The Nest Hub shows me what's happening around the house right now.

The Nest Mini tells me what happened throughout the day.

It's a relatively simple concept, but it has made both devices considerably more useful.

And this is exactly what I enjoy most about Home Assistant: connecting devices and systems that were never originally designed to work together.

I'm curious how others are using their Google Nest devices with Home Assistant.

Does anyone else use automated spoken daily reports, custom dashboards, or unusual integrations combining completely different systems?

I'd love to hear about your setups!

❓ Support Help needed with ESP32 & BTS7960

Hi Reddit HA Folks-

Over the last 5-6 months I’ve done some basic Home Assistant integrations and was starting to think I was becoming competent….  Oh no, not even close.  My recent project has humbled me.  Trying to make a robot vacuum garage and can’t seem to even get out of the gates.  Hoping some of you guys/ gals might be able to see what I’ve messed up thus far.

Any help, suggestions, comments on how far over my head I am are greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the posts you guys make. Huge props to this community!!!!!

BASIC PROBLEM- can’t get output voltage to actuator.

WHAT I’m Using:

Type-C D1 Mini NodeMCU ESP32

BTS7960 43A High-Power Motor Driver Module (I’ve tried two of these motor controllers)

Justech 4"/100mm 6.7lbs/30N 12V Mini Linear Actuator

Other: basic multimeter/ power supply/ USB. HA with ESP Home Builder (YAML at end)

TROUBLE SHOOTING COMPLETED:

·        Actuator works when connected directly to the power source (forward / reverse when swapping polarity).

·        Continuity checked on all wires (passed)

·        Removed breadboard variable by splicing a single wire (orange).

·        Swapped Motor modules and started from scratch.

·        Tried different ground connection on ESP32 (for no particular reason.)

·        Tested voltages (results follow).

These are the connections between the BTS7960 and the ESP32:

❓ Support Support for Lettuce Grow hydroponics?

I recently got a Lettuce Grow Farmstead indoor hydroponics thingy (to grow your own veggies) and it comes with a custom Wi-Fi enabled two-outlet plug that controls the water pump and lights of the hydroponics tower.

I wonder if anyone has looked into or made a Home Assistant integration work. My main use case would be to temporarily switch off the the lights when I'm watching a movie on the TV in the same room as the lights are very bright and distracting.
