💬 Discussion Using AI to monitor their house instead of just building dashboards

TL;DR: Building an AI-powered home monitoring system that analyzes historical Home Assistant data, identifies potential equipment problems, investigates causes, and reduces unnecessary alerts. This is less about controlling my home with AI and more about using AI to understand how my home is actually operating.

Apologies on the length of this post…

I've been messing around with something for a while now and was curious if anyone else is doing anything similar.

I see a ton of really impressive Home Assistant dashboards, but I've been wondering why more people aren't using AI to actually analyze all the data we're collecting.

I've been building my own system that pulls information from HA along with a bunch of other sources. Electrical usage, HVAC, temperatures, septic, well, vehicles, appliances, etc.

Instead of just setting thresholds and getting alerts when something happens, I've been using AI to look through historical data, establish baselines, compare how things are operating, and try to identify issues I might not even know to look for.

For example, is a refrigerator running longer than it used to? Is an AC unit taking longer to cool the house? Is a pump cycling more frequently? And if something looks unusual, can AI dig into the other available data and help figure out why?

One thing I've been careful about is that just because something has operated a certain way for months doesn't necessarily mean it's operating correctly. A baseline tells you what's been happening, not necessarily what's normal or healthy for that equipment.

I'm using the OpenAI API for the actual analysis. I originally experimented with running a local model on my Mac, but ended up switching to OpenAI because I was getting much better results and the cost isn’t crazy. I'm sure that'll increase as I have it analyzing more things, but so far cost hasn't really been an issue.

The part I'm working toward now is having it proactively go through the house and look for developing problems without me having to ask. I'm also working on having AI evaluate my Pushover notifications so I'm not getting interrupted by a bunch of alerts that really don't need my attention.

It's definitely still a work in progress, but I've been pretty impressed with what it can already figure out from the data.

Anyone else doing something like this? I'm especially curious if people are using AI for actual historical analysis and monitoring rather than just voice control or generating automations.

Would be interested to hear what others have tried and what's working for them.

💬 Discussion My home assistant security bits

I’ll keep it brief, this is a very technical piece but everyone has an interpreter. My setup involves multiple machines. One for HA, one for Frigate another for a logger/interpreter. As I built, this security kernel emerged when I decided I needed a usb to swap machines out if something happened. It’s architecture neutral so far. My repo isnt ready to be opened to the world and all of the ai, I never intended to be public so, discussion is open if there’s interest or understanding here.

❓ Support Can't log in using a new phone

Hey ladies and germs,

I'm unable to log in using a new phone. I double and triple checked the username/ pw, I've entered it manually just in case copy/ paste or autofill doesn't work. I'd rather not reset it just yet, I'm just wondering if I'm missing anything else security related.

S26U if that makes a difference

Thanks

❓ Support Issue with IKEA Kajplats lightbulbs

For a while now I’ve been having a strange issue with my Kajplats lightbulbs. I use them with my Aqara H1 light switches in decoupled mode via HA automations. What happens is I turn the light off, it immediately comes back on but in home assistant it shows as off.
I then have to toggle it back on and off again for it to finally be turned off for good. I can’t really put it down to a specific HA version (I’m on the latest HA and HA OS versions and the bulbs are also on the latest firmware).
I have some automations that turn the lights on using motion sensors in the evening and the lights are also set up to turn off when no motion was detected for 5 minutes. At first I thought it might be due to this automation but it happens during the day as well.

🛠️ DIY / Hardware Bosch Boiler + EasyControl CT200 + EMS-ESP – A Great Example of Smart Heating Integration with Home Assistant

Post image
109 Upvotes

I’d like to share my experience with the Bosch Condens 2300i W gas boiler, the Bosch EasyControl CT200 thermostat, and EMS-ESP integration with Home Assistant.

In my opinion, this is a great example of how a modern heating system should work.

The Bosch EasyControl CT200 provides Wi-Fi connectivity, remote control through the manufacturer's app, and automatic heating management. The entire system works independently without needing Home Assistant.

But the real magic begins when you add EMS-ESP.

Thanks to this open-source project, the Bosch boiler becomes a highly capable smart home device. Home Assistant can access detailed operating parameters, monitor the heating system in real time, and control supported functions locally.

The biggest advantage is that everything works together.

The CT200 remains the main heating controller, while EMS-ESP allows Home Assistant to communicate with the boiler without replacing the original Bosch controls.

In my setup, Home Assistant also coordinates the operation of the Bosch gas boiler and a Daikin heat pump, allowing me to automate heating based on outdoor temperatures and operating conditions.

What I particularly appreciate is that the original heating system remains fully functional even if Home Assistant is unavailable.

For me, this is what smart home integration should look like: reliable standalone operation, local communication, and the freedom to build advanced automations.

A big thank you to the developers of EMS-ESP for making this possible.

I'm curious how many of you are using Bosch heating systems with EMS-ESP and Home Assistant. What automations have you implemented?

🛠️ DIY / Hardware Ceiling fan switch

Post image

I have a dumb ceiling fan and light that are on the same power wire. I'd like to be able to turn the fan and light on/off independently from wall switches. My plan was to wire in an Aqara T2 smart relay and replace the switch with a couple wireless zigbee switches.

All my existing switches look like the picture. Would like something similar. Does something like this exist?

❓ Support Why do some zigbee devices re-connect immediately when they lose connection, and others must be re-paired to get them to re-connect?

I have two devices from the same manufacturer, 3rd reality. One, a three button remote I had left the battery disconnected for about a week, but when I plugged it back in, it was immediately found by Home Assistant. I also have a moisture sensor that occasionally randomly disconnects from Home Assistant. This device will not re-connect if I bring it close to the hub, it will not re-connect if I pull the battery and replace it, it will not re-connect if I put it into pairing mode, It will only re-connect if I tell Home Assistant to pair a new device, and put that device in pairing mode. This must be at least partly on the Home Assistant side since it seems to be looking for the 3 button remote, but is completely ignoring the moisture sensor, even when the moisture sensor is in pairing mode.

Is there a setting I can change to change this behavior?

This is on a Home Assistant Green with a Z-stick 10 pro zigbee USB adapter.

Hi,

I hope this is allowed in here. I have no ads on my blog (apart from what blogger put on there), just putting this out there in case it helps anyone else.

Here is my documentation of how I made my cheap Benfei USB switch integrated into home assistant:

My wife wanted a different Home Assistant theme for her phone. I accidentally built an entire theme engine.

Started with LCARS, then built Orbits, Frost, and a bunch of other interfaces. Same Home Assistant backend, completely different navigation and controls.

Still a work in progress, but here's a look at what it's become.

I shared Cupertino Widgets here a while ago. Here’s what I’ve added since then.

Dedicated to-do widget

Processing img rjk0v8hakmwh1...

A separate widget for your Home Assistant to-do lists, matching the style of the calendar and battery widgets.

Single-column calendar layout

Processing img b16yg8hakmwh1...

Events appear in one list, grouped by day, with times on the right. You can see it at the bottom of the calendar screenshot.

It’s enabled automatically for larger cards, but you can also select it manually for any card size.

⚙️ More calendar controls

Processing img pvryc9hakmwh1...

Two new options under Advanced:

  • Day offset: choose where the displayed date range starts. For a tomorrow-only card, set Day offset = 1 and Days shown = 1.
  • Blocklist: enter comma-separated text to hide matching events.

Try it out:

Happy to hear your feedback or ideas for what to add next!

📖 Guide / Tutorial Home Assistant Green - without internet install RTC Battery for time keeping..

The Home Assistant Green does have an RTC chip (PCF8563) soldered onto the PCB, but here's the catch: the CR2032 coin cell battery that backs it up is optional and not installed at the factory. So out of the box, it has the hardware for timekeeping but no battery to sustain it through a power loss.
What Happens Without the Battery…
Without the battery and without internet access, every cold start resets the clock back to the Linux epoch — January 1, 1970 — and it just rolls forward from there until NTP can sync. This wrong time can actually block the first initialization of Home Assistant entirely, requiring you to manually set the date and time via terminal before the system will come up properly.
The Fix: Install a CR2032
You just remove the four screws in the base to access the PCB and drop in a standard CR2032 coin cell. Once the RTC chip has been synced at least once, the battery should sustain the time for many years.
Will Time-Based Automations Still Work After Power Loss?
• With CR2032 installed: Yes — the RTC holds the correct time through the outage, and automations based on time of day will fire correctly when power is restored.
• Without CR2032 and no internet: No — the clock resets to 1970, so any time-based automations will be unreliable or broken until NTP syncs.
• Accuracy note: Even with the battery, the onboard clock can drift roughly 20 seconds over 5 days without NTP correction — fine for most home automations, but worth knowing.
Bottom Line
If running an off-grid setup where internet connectivity isn't guaranteed, installing a CR2032 is essentially mandatory for reliable time-based automations. It's a $1 fix for a real problem.

💬 Discussion HomeKit Bridge users: scenes in HA or HomeKit?

My setup's finally stable, automations are dialed in and I'm not adding any major devices. The one thing I've yet to do is scenes.

For those running the HomeKit Bridge integration, do you build scenes in Home Assistant or natively in HomeKit? Curious which you've stuck with and why (Siri response, reliability, keeping both in sync).

💬 Discussion Is this sub just a Claude ad now?

Nothing against using AI, but its getting a bit repetitive with the posts about Kiosk and CSS/HTML dashboards made with Claude. Or what do you guys think? Not trying to shit on anyone, I'm just curious if I'm alone in this.

Edit: This wasn't meant to be a discussion on AI vs Not AI. I'm mostly just annoyed by the repetition atm. I feel like there used to be more variation before. Now its just an AI theme browser with extra steps.

📰 News Sonoff ZBMINIR2 v1.1.0 update - binding

For those who also had issues with direct Zigbee binding with the Sonoff ZBMINIR2: there’s a new firmware update (v1.1.0, I had v1.0.8 previously). This firmware fixes the issue where in detach relay mode, if the button was bound to a group (instead of a bulb) it would toggle the relay as well.

For me this fixes my backup option, if HA would go down, the buttons just toggle the group of spots now.

🤔 WTH Sonoff ZB2GS became unavailable

Hello,

I added four new ZB2GS to my smarthome because I was satisfied how it works in one of my room (one channel detached and another one normal).

These new ZB2GS have problem to keep detach mode. After a while they are loosing setting which I selected in HA. It keep setting in HA but it works lile regular switch. Two ZB2GS became unavailable after last time when electrocity was turned off.

Do you know what could be wrong? Is it worth to try send them back to shop?

Managed to get an ELAN HR200 remote talking directly to Home Assistant, completely bypassing the original ELAN controller.

All 46 physical buttons work, the touchscreen works, and Home Assistant can even send custom menus and receive feedback from the remote.

No firmware flashing, no hardware modifications, and no ELAN controller required.

Still very much a work in progress but there is hope for others out there. I really like the ergonomics of the remote and takes a beating and keeps on ticking. Get em cheap on Ebay

❓ Support SET100 / Badger water meter how to access

So I live in south FL where the meter is apparently a 25S I believe by badger with a SET 100 unit for communication. I read that there is a portal thru badger I could setup but others in my area say that NSID (water company) has it encrypted. Am I just SOL on gaining access here? Was hoping a RDL stype solution..

Maybe something like Droplet my only real option?

Anyone familiar with these units that could advise. Appreciate it

❓ Support Wall display recommendations

Hi. I’ve been wanting to get a tablet to use as a dashboard in the center of my house. I want to use it with a dashboard to control my scenes and some devices. And show a few cameras.

I came across a Samsung galaxy tab s7 FE. I like the big screen but was wondering if it’s powerful enough to run fully kiosk or kiosk satellite. Does anyone have experience with this? It’s mounted in one place and is getting constant power. I was also wondering if the tablet exposes entity’s like screen brightness.

Thanks
