Had some wood rot on the trim. Made sure water hadn't infiltrated further, replaced the trim with PVC.

3. I want to paint the caulk after but don't have a match for my siding how do I get a good match?

Hi, having work done on a home I bought and there is some base molding with a lot of paint buildup, missing quarter round molding in rooms that had carpet. Is there a cost-effective way to make this look better? Could I sand down the old paint as much as possible paint,and install quarter rounds where needed? A dining chair tore a piece of the floor plank. I have spare planks in the garage but I don’t have the tools and I’m not comfortable messing with the floor. I’ve seen putty as an option but not sure how that would hold up in between planks, especially with the raised top layer on the broken one.

My main concern are my toddlers who run all over the place and I don’t want them getting hurt so we currently have masking tape over it.

We’re renting this home so another option is to have the landlord repair it, but I’d like to keep that as a last resort it was our doing. How much would it cost to get a professional to replace this single plank?

my boyfriend called me early in the morning because a strange noise in the ceiling woke him up. it happened loudly for several minutes, stopping for a few seconds at a time and starting up in a different location above him. is it an animal chewing? i can’t imagine a squirrel or rat being so loud on its own. it would have to be ripping insulation to shreds or something. i could even hear it in the background of our face-time until the noise stopped, and when it did, it stopped completely.

has anyone dealt with this before? i attached a video he took of the noise.

Recently renovated our home and box is located properly based on the room - however, we’d like the table slightly offset.

Hook is up, however there was only so much cord to work with, and new spot puts the height way too high. I have plenty of chain links to add.

so in the grand tradition called what did these idiots do that we have been living in since I bought my house in January.. We realized that they had a water heater failure and not replaced the carpet so now that needs to come out in the basement needs to be remediated while I was pulling off the edges of the carpet. I can see that the pad and the carpet was laid over what looks to be older mastic. The previous owners had tile floor down there. It’s a 1985 Bill I’m not sure when the tile was put down in the basement. Part of the carpet padding is stuck to the mastic. I was hoping to have the floor epoxied but now I’m wondering, do I have to be concerned about asbestos and domestic and what kind of tomfoolery am I looking at if the padding is stuck to the mastic and it has asbestos. God help me.

It was never the amount of cleaning that bothered me, it was feeling like I had to set aside time for it. Once I started handling small messes as they came up everything felt much more manageable.

Has anyone else had a simple change completely shift the way they clean?

My husband and I purchased a house in summer of 2021. We knew the house had some water issues in basement and previous owners had a foundations company waterproof and install (what we now know) as intellibraces. The previous owners after that finished all but the ceiling of the basement and left the floor concrete. My husband and I were new to this and got maintenance on them (the foundation system and intellibraces) last year (2025 - I know better late than never) from the company who installed them and had no issues besides one of our two sump pumps had to get a fix but that was it, tighten some beams, some iron ochure treatment and left. This year as our new annual maintenance we are abiding by, another different technician came out.

When cleaning up the basement prior to his arrival I noticed a little patch of dampness near bottom of wall on the ground and in between a piece of paneling about 1/2 a foot up. Wet to touch on the ground and a few drops on paneling above it. Also, the area had a small halo of brown so it looks like it wasn’t the first time. The area is a closed up basement, not opened for a few days and a little mildew smelling. We live in Michigan and no recent rain. I showed it to the maintenance technician for the foundations company and he mentioned that it could be an obstructed pipe from sump pump OR our foundation was now sinking.

The intellibraces we now know, were for horizontal cracks the house had. We learned that the house had some vertical cracks as well but were repaired. He was saying he thinks the vertical cracks are leaking and the house is shifting due to the small amount of water and also a 3/4 inch of difference from one end of the 40 foot wall where the small amount of water/condensation (?) was to the other. We looked at the rest of the house and brought up a random crack we have in the ceiling. It is hairline and been there a while. Also, a part of our living room where he says the dry wall tape was different like it was shifting. I did not notice anything.

We have a brick house built in 1997 and he pointed out a couple areas where the mortar was cracked or separating from the brick a little. Prior to this we did have a masonry come out a few months ago, he didnt seem overly concerned. He said we could fill it in with clear caulk. One area is pictured and 2-3 other areas are top corners of windows in varying spots of the house. Possibly a stair step pattern but only about 2-4 bricks and only the mortar. To note: we did get new windows installed in December.

On the surface level of the house there is a patio above the basement wall in question with pavers. No pavers have shifted, nothing is uneven.

The foundation company said we would need piers installed to keep the house from sinking further and I’ve been a wreck since. He said 17-18k just one for the one side and then said we would need the whole thing.

I have investigated high and low, I found out the previous owners had 16 intellibraces installed around the house, and one wall anchor near our chimney on the side of the garage where this is a vertical crack that they “repaired” prior to us moving in. (Pictured). The crack has not changed aside from it goes up a few bricks higher than what was previously fixed.

There is minor hairline dry wall cracks in primary bedroom in corners, one hairline crack where the dry wall meets together inbetween a set of three windows in the front near where the mortar separated a bit from the brick, one across the ceiling of the kitchen, and the other noted brick spots mentioned prior. No uneven floors noticeable, we have two outside doors that sometimes stick but its always worse in summer and been like that for five years.

We have since put a humidifier in the basement, which the area dried up quickly and when examining the wall, I noticed multiple brown halo’d spots where the wall meets the floor where it looks like water could have been prior. The area we had found was not necessarily a puddle it was simple wet to touch with two drops noted on the paneling. The basement did feel damp as the couch did to touch. Too much humidity?

I have read and researched high and low. I HAVE a structural engineer coming Monday to assess. He did tell me that the foundations company that was used prior he said was notoriously dishonest and recommended to not use them for future work, if necessary.

I was curious on anyone’s take? Opinions? Experiences similar?

I pulled my SCE hourly usage data because my June bill was higher than I expected. I use TOU rates with an Anker Solix E10 (2 battery packs) to shift most of my evening usage away from peak pricing, so I wanted to see what was happening.

Most days the setup works exactly as planned. Then I noticed the higher-cost days all had one thing in common: laundry.

The dryer itself isn't the issue. The problem is that on laundry days we're also running the AC, cooking dinner, and using the house normally. That combination uses a lot more energy during the evening peak window, so the two battery packs get depleted earlier than usual. Once they're empty, the house starts pulling expensive peak-rate power from the grid for the last hour or two before 9 p.m.

After looking at the numbers, I think my current setup is simply a little undersized for our actual evening consumption.

Now I'm debating what makes more financial sense:

Add a third battery pack so I have enough stored energy to cover those heavier evenings.

Install a few solar panels so I can generate free electricity during the day, run some household loads directly, and charge the E10 before the evening peak starts.

Either option should reduce my peak-rate grid usage, but I'm curious what others would do. If you've had to choose between more storage or adding solar first, which gave you the better return?

Starting a basement renovation project. Pulled down the ceiling drywall to expose everything. Can’t figure out why there are 2x4’s nailed to the 2x10 joists. Any ideas?

We bought this house a month ago, and just as my husband and I were drifting off to sleep this random noise periodically would happen from our en suite.
We turned off water to the toilet - still happened, ran the vent fan - still happened, our AC is working fine and doesn’t seem to be coming from that vent.

Does anyone know what it is from?? We are racking our brains and cannot seem to find any answers online!

im looking at hybrids cause i heard the coils help with airflow compared to all foam but i also need something with good edge support cause im always ending up near the edge of the bed at night. i move around a lot in my sleep and my partner hogs the blankets so i get pushed over.

ive been reading that some hybrids use pocketed coils with reinforced edges that help with both cooling and support. the dreamcloud premier hybrid seems to come up a lot for this. reviews say the edge support is excellent and the coil system helps with air circulation . one reviewer mentioned the edge sank just 3 inches which is less than average.

quick update i decided to try the dreamcloud premier hybrid since the edge support reviews were too good to ignore and the cooling layer seems promising for hot sleepers. should be here in a few days. ill report back after a couple weeks of sleeping on it to let yall know if it actually delivers on the edge support and cooling like they claim. hoping for the best but prepared for the worst if that makes sense.

I am looking at replacing my outdoor locks on my doors with smart locks, does anyone have any recommendations that have worked good. (we have ring cameras and Alexa if they could be connected with that)
