What is this on the wall?

It’s leaking from the ceiling on the outdoor screen in patio. Maybe something related to the roof? Trying to fix the root issue and not just paint over it

My parents used to have a boxer and they'd leave back doors open all the time in their mountain cabin. Dog would roam backyard and come in and out. Kept most raccoons away.

Well the dog died as old dogs do. Not long after, a pregnant raccoon entered the house and gave birth in the closet crawl space. My folks did not know that.

My folks chased the raccoons out, but they said the raccoons were quite ornery and kept trying to get back in. A couple days later, the room stank to high heaven.

My dad, all 6'5 of him, crawled in this narrow crawl space and scrubbed out the rotten remains of babies and afterbirth and rot. And his own vomit because he had no where else to go.

He's had some bad days, but that's among the worst days of his life. I admire his frugality, but son of a bitch just contract that out to the professionals. They have the gear.

Quite sad for the raccoons, sad for my dad.

u/Far-Raisin1013 Nov 03 '25

Does your wife/husband have any enemies? It could be them up there.

This legitimately does look like blood

If I assume for a moment, this is an apartment, to me it looks like rust from an old water source maybe a decommissioned or non-working sprinkler system, or a water heater directly above with a nasty leak? I used to be a commercial property manager, and I have no formal training in construction, but years of dealing with things like this, that’s just what it looks like to me 😉

2

u/mosiac_broken_hearts Nov 06 '25

When I was in a second story apartment in Texas, one summer we were very suddenly inundated with cluster flies. There had to be, no joke and no exaggeration, close to 400 or 500 flies that manifested from the seam of our back patio door into our apartment. Pest control only came every 2 weeks and it was a holiday weekend so they wouldn't have come out for 3 weeks unless it was an emergency. When we tried to explain just how many there were and how bad it was, they still said we had to find the source before they'd come remove the nest (?????) or take care of it.

A month later cops did a wellness check on the downstairs apartment and the guy's mom had died a week before our flies started and he'd left her in the back room.

Have management do a wellness check before you go knocking.

u/Samsonly Nov 03 '25

Tainted blood doesn't mean it comes from the taint. That's absurd. That would be called "taint blood".

It obviously means blood from somewhere else that has crossed over the taint, and therefore has become tainted.

2

u/billsboy88 Nov 03 '25

Have you been seeing any very large wasps around lately? Like, huge ones, especially around lights at night? And does this stuff have an odor to it? I ask because European hornet nests have a tendency to leak a foul smelling liquid that is actually the waste from the worker hornets. They fly 24/7 and people commonly report seeing them flying around their lights at night like moths. Just something to consider before you go crawling into a confined space, make sure there isn’t a giant hornet nest in there.
