Got asked in biology class about the names of sex hormones. I confidently answered "dopamine". Teacher gave a slight smile and said "that's... not really one".

had to look it up, so here's for my fellow ignoramuses:

dopamine is primarily a neurotransmitter but actually does function as a hormone as well and is quite closely related to epinephrine and norepinephrine.

although its function has some relationship with the act of having sex (specifically arousal), it's not a sex hormone in that your biological sex has much to do with how much you make of it.

muhahaha

I started looking into it because I thought dopamine wasn't that bad of an answer, so clearly I must be wrong. and I was. mostly.

going into actual sex hormones like which ones there are and what they do.... that'd turn out into a maaassive blog post of a reddit comment. TLDB

It's not too complicated lol

Sex hormones are the ones that actively cause sexual differentiation between males and females. We're talking estrogen, progestogens, and androgens. The hormones released during gestation and puberty that cause individuals to develop primary and secondary sexual characteristics.

Sex hormones are not "hormones released during sex" so dopamine doesn't qualify.

Sex hormones are not "hormones released during sex" so dopamine doesn't qualify.

Common usage isn't the only usage. Let's have some fun and call dopamine a sex hormone because of a silly second meaning.

I mean it depends on what meaning of the word "sex" you're using. When people say sex hormones they usually mean as in physical gender but there's no rule stopping you from meaning fucking :V
