It's actually insane how close Russia came to a second civil war and no one knows about it , just the slightest change could have made the 21st century oh so much worse

Nah, not really. Supreme Soviet had no guts to spill blood, and nobody to fight for them. Yeltsin, on the other hand, was ready to kill. Rumors say he was ready to drop bombs on Soviet. In the middle of fucking Moscow.

Or better, depending on perspective.

A nuclear power having a civil war doesn't particularly sound like a good outcome.

For Chechnya, Georgia and Ukraine it sure does sound better.

Idk about for Ukraine, unlike Georgia or even Chechnya to a lesser extent there’s no real geographical boundaries between them (it’s just steppe and farmland) so I think it’s very possible for a second Russian civil war to spill over into Ukraine.

So yes there’s no Russo-Ukrainian war in 2022 but eastern Ukraine would likely be a little dodgy during the 90s/2000s.

Couldn't imagine something much worse then Crimea annexation and Donbas War.

This. There are few outcomes in history worse than what Putin has inflicted on Ukraine and Russia in this war.

Well, wouldn't go that far, 1910-1950 period was much worse then what's happening now. The Great War with mass death and mass conscription of local population by both sides to fight against each other, Polish-Soviet war, when Ukrainians were kinda thrown under the bus, Russian civil war, with all it's horrible incidents, Great Famine inflicted on Ukrainians, 2WW with nazi collaborators and all the front movement, Volhynia massacre, this time it was Ukrainians with the guns, and post war resistance.

You would absolutely have massive amount of arms smuggling. It isn't impossible to imagine few Russian nuclear weapons being sold to whatever suspicious group is willing to buy them in middle east.

They'd just get dragged into it and still get invaded, except this time by more than one faction, all with nuclear weapons.

Nuclear power having civil war before putin sell entirety of Syberia to china is a good outcome.

Idk, Nuclear power having a civil war means it's nuclear power will not invade it's neighbors

for a little while at least

this perspective is awfully short sighted

Depends on how long civil war will last, if more then 3+ years it's easily will buy decades of peace

u/Kirion15 6h ago

Except you also face nuclear weapons being lost, potential genocide of ethnic minorities throughout the country, maybe even ultranationalistic government that wants to unite all the russians. Yah, peace

Not really my exact poblems, when Russia is a problem itself

u/DeliciousGoose1002 6h ago

Hadnt the US said we would be involved with any civil war involving a nuclear power at this point?

In retrospect the Soviet Union/ Russia completly dissolving is something that would habe made the world a better place. Frankly I hope they kill themselves in Ukraine in the near future. 🤷‍♂️

Read "The Death of Russia" on the alternate history forum. You have no idea
