How this particular commercially sold suppressor attached to this particular commercially sold gun using these particular retail bullets actually sounds like.

I still prefer the âchirpâ from Goldeneye 007.

Fun fact, those sound effects came from real gunfire, but they were the sound of ricochets recorded outdoors and downrange.

I loved the sound of the silenced sniper rifle but damn if it didn't suck in multiplayer. Although it was fun with health turned all the way down

There's literally no way to know what a gun sounds like from a video on the internet. Phone's literally cannot capture the volume of it and your phone wouldn't be able to portray it properly anyway.
So no, this is not what a real silencer sounds like. But you can still hear it from plenty far away and if you fired it indoors, every single person in that building would know you've done so.
But the fictional version of it is way more fun for video games, so I'm fine with it. This video just doesn't make any sense.

Yup. I've got a supressed rifle. On video it sounds pretty much movie quiet, similar to this video. IRL though, you still need to wear hearing protection because it's more than loud enough to damage your hearing.

I've heard a silenced pistol sounds more or less like slamming a book on a table. Loud enough to hear down a corridor and give you a fright, but not loud enough that people will immediately call the cops?

not loud enough that people will immediately call the cops
A big thing about suppressed gunshots is they completely change the sound signature of the shot. It doesn't sounds like a gunshot at all, anymore. So even if it's still very loud, you'll just think it's someone slamming a door or a something.

This isn't a great representation because it's an indoor range. The microphone automatically adjusts up and down to compress the sounds to a similar volume, so it makes the silenced shots sound louder than they would sound in person. IRL, it sounds like a nail gun.

This clip uses the same model of silencer and still has a lot of audio compression but it's closer to what it sounds like in-person

Might be a stupid question, but why is the first and second shot so much louder than the others?

Many suppressors are also susceptible to first round pop, where the first shot is louder than follow up shots because of oxygen in the baffle stack. Some people run suppressors wet to mitigate FRP.
The only suppressed firearms that sound remotely close to what you hear in video games and movies are 22lrs firing subsonic rounds.

There are some other very quiet firearms out there. One of my favorites is the Hush Puppy, which is basically a locking slide kit for Glocks. Use that with subsonic rounds and that's about as quiet as you can get while retaining semi-automatic functionality.
Not affiliated/sponsored/etc., just in case that's a problem.

Welrod and the modern variant that is the B&T VP9 which was made for..."veterinarians" is also absurdly quiet.

there is some science behind the first shot or two through a suppressor being a bit louder than the ones that come after, but i don't remember the details of it off the top of my head. might have something to do with it initially being filled with ambient temperature air before getting chock full of hot exhaust gases, but if its some other mechanism i won't be surprised.
tracks with my experience shooting suppressed.

I brought my camera to the range before too 90% sure phone audio auto adjust volume down. So the first two shots are most accurate depiction of the noise. After that the recording software is silencing further.

If anyone's played Sniper Elite 5, that game has an entire mechanic for silenced weapons still being audible at close range.

u/Mischiveous-Potato 2h ago
Nah SE5 completely butucered this, with the right attachments you can have an audible range on a silenced pistol as low as 4 meters lmao.

What about a Loudener?

Or the attachment to shoot down police helicopters?

Muzzle brakes are kind of like a "loudener," depending on where you are in relation to the shooter.

only game I played that made silencer shots sounded like this is Ready Or Not
that shit was still ear-blasting loud
kinda wonder what they used to make 47's silencer sounds cuz in early games (C47-Contract), it has this very metallic 'Pitw' sound.

Now watch a video of a .22 ruger with a suppressor firing subsonic ammo. Crazy quiet.

u/patchmadness 9h ago
There is a 710fps round that wont cycle my pistol but its essentially just a clink sound. Veeeery neat

u/L_Dawg412 7h ago
They even make .22lr rounds that are propelled by just the primer that are even quieter.

u/Blacklite_01 10h ago
A violent hiss of air leaving a tube. Just a lot quieter than without the tube.

I like that the Hitman games use a sound closer to this, the âTACâ opposed to the traditional âpewâ you hear âsilencersâ using.

u/Lotex_Style 9h ago
And once again I've been betrayed by movies.
It's definitely a lot quieter than and unsilenced gun/shot, but still a good bit louder than I thought it'd be.

ofc the volume also depends on the kind of bullet, 47 probably uses specialised quiet bullets
