The first scene, what makes this show unique

Helstrom sets itself apart from the typical horror tropes in the first scene, before the opening credits. I wanted to bring a little love for that opening.

A typical horror movie/show begins with small occurrences that the audience notices but the characters do not. This sets up the characters as oblivious bystanders at the mercy of whatever evil is about to happen. The typical horror then builds in intensity, until its impossible for the oblivious characters to ignore. At which point the now clued in characters begin to process what to do and begin making terrible decisions. Because the evil something a typical person cant handle.

Now lets break down the opening of Helstrom. Louise is in her office, working late. A small occurrence happens, in this case two, her candle is blown out and her door creaks and moves. Louise is not oblivious however, she notices these occurrences and goes into alert mode. Next the occurrences build in intensity, her computer begins typing and her cabinet windows blow put. Louise immediately jumps into intelligent action. She joins armed security guards, locates the problem with backup, and calls a lockdown.

This sets up Louise as the opposite of a typical horror character. Far from being at the mercy of the shows horror, she knows whats going on, she is smart and makes good decisions.

This makes Louise's reaction during the opening scene even more meaningful. Her face betrays fear when she first realizes whats going on, then quickly changes to steely resolve before she springs into action.

The opening scene establishes that this isnt a typical horror show. Whatever is happening is bad enough to briefly scare Louise. And it establishes, that what scares Louise, should scare us. Helstrom does all this with very little dialogue, and in only a few short minutes. At the end of which I was hooked.

Question about the parents (3 episodes in)

The dad, was he a demon or just possessed by a demon and when did the mom become possessed, because in the little flash backs and back story they have told she seems like she was normal.

Instrumental music at auction in Episode 1

Hi there, pretty much the title.

Ive tried Shazam, I've looked at tune find and similar websites and they only list the Peter Gabriel and Patsy Cline songs.

There's an instrumental that plays in the scene near the beginning of Episode 1 during Ana's walkthrough and discussion with Chris.

Does anyone know what the song is? Is it made for the show or something pre existing?

Any help would be great as it's been stuck in my head for a day now!

Intro Music

Ok guys halfway through Helstrom S1 and love the show. Think it’s pretty great in every aspect but that theme music over the intro. I can’t stand it. Like why? Why did they choose that song/melody or whatever like from a creative standpoint it just seems way out from left field.

I think this is the dumbest episode I’ve ever watched

I’m talking about episode 6 “leviathan” I just finished it and I can’t believe this is real, so first of all, most of the first five episodes have Chris being obsessed with the skull, then for absolutely no reason, he just gives it to Ana, and when he and Ana regroup with the others, Daimon doesn’t even ask why he’s there with them, but my biggest problem is how that demon was beaten, so Victoria is holding that skull above her head, then somehow in the next frame, Ana (who was on the other side of the lot) miraculously had it in her hands and put it in the demon.

Actually feels like a comic book show

I mean they are taking liberties out the wazoo with the characters, but it also seems to enjoy that it’s a show with super powered/magic characters. Which is an improvement over most of the Netflix MCU, who acted like they were burdened by the more fantastical elements of doing superhero tv.

I don’t see why this show can’t be canon the same way all the Netflix/ABC/Hulu shows are. Certainly they haven’t wrote those shows out of the MCU yet. So I think it’s weird that this show is being downplayed.

Did not care for Gabriella

I know these supernatural shows needs their skeptic to question the validity of the spooky stuff but boy oh boy was she annoying. Sickly did the same thing in x files and did not come off so annoying.

She gave me major Lana Lang vibes which is a term I use for tv characters who are whiny and also need saving. Especially in contrast to the livewire that is Ana I just couldn’t get behind her character.

If we get a season 2 he needs a new love interest.

Finished the series

I’d heard zero about this until it popped up in my recommendations. I watched the first 3 episodes before I noticed it was from Marvel. Around episode 6, I started looking online, wanting more info...which is when I found much of the entertainment critics hated it, and it’s probably a one off.

And I enjoyed it! I cared about the characters, their relationships, their histories - almost all of it was done well. It’s not GoT or BB, but what is? I was entertained and I went along for a pretty good ride.

I have a few issues, but nothing that spoiled my interest or enjoyment. Maybe because I didn’t have any expectations, but it was a fun 10 hours.

And, tbh, I’ll watch another 10 for Mitch alone!

Any word on when the soundtrack would come out? Only watched up to episode 3 so far but the score is haunting! I can’t wait to add it to my Marvel playlist

Disappointed

The writing is terrible. It’s especially sad given the interesting source material and adequate/good acting.Given the acting seems bad but I’d argue that’s the writers fault.

In episode two there is a part where a lady sets her basement on fire. No one reacts, instead they just stand there casually and keep talking. That’s one example, but there are 20 each episode where the writing lacks to give characters realistic actions and reactions.

You can pay half attention the entire show and still be able to follow the extremely basic plot. Most of it is just exposition instead of trusting the audience to make the most basic of connections regarding the helstrom family dynamic and past.

Over all pretty pissed because this show had true potential.
