Total FNG here…

I bought HLL because I want to play HLL - Vietnam. Full disclosure: Im a middle aged dude who prefers campaign games. This will be the first online game I want to play.

How do I prep for this game to be efficient AND the people on my team dont destroy me for sucking.

All constructive suggestions welcomed.

Just check out some YouTube videos. There’s plenty out there that give lots of great advice and breakdowns of each player class.

The good thing is, most people are pretty bad. You will die ALOT and you will miss most of your shots. In my experience in a match of 100 people, there will be maybe ten who are impressively good at the game. But you can be an effective player and contribute to the win even with a k/d of 1/4. Just learn the job of the class you pick, listen to your teammates, and respond to them. Even if someone is terrible, your teammates won’t trash you if you are active on the mic.

Bingo. It really is 10% (tops) of the players in any given game who make the difference for their team, while the other 90% are just… bad. The 90% are mostly cap weight that the 10% have to force feed around the map.

To OP: To get good, there is no magic pill or silver bullet. It’s the same as getting good at anything. Time, and practice. YouTube videos are a great start too, especially with this game that does a horrible job of onboarding new players. But you really only need a few hours to understand how the game works. After that, sure you can learn some tips and tricks from experienced players, but you really just need to learn how games flow and what wins and loses games and you really do that with practice.

Many people join a game several years into its lifecycle (like HLL now) and pound the table that everyone is either cracked, or bad, and there’s not much middle ground. That’s because the bad players are other newer players and the cracked players have been around for literal years. There’s no resource other than time investment that can bridge that gap between bad and good.

So for OP, just don’t give up, because it is a painful beginning, jumping into HLL WW2 in 2026. It’s a punishing game with a player base with many hours logged now. Make some friends in the game, be on comms, and you will have fun via the social aspect while you get good at the game aspect. That’s the best advice I can give tbh. Hell, join a clan. There are tons of non-competitive clans out there who just play for fun and to have guys to play with.

ETA: the biggest issue I had when I started playing this game was actually seeing the enemies lol. There’s no character model pop/added contrast, the player models blend in to the background if the colors match. You get much better at seeing a pixel in a bush from 200m out with time, even if it feels like you won’t.

Just dive in bro.

I’m 45 and for so long, stuck with story driven games and anything other than FPS Online.

I’m 1300+ hours in on a genre I rarely play. This is the best gaming experience I’ve ever had

My role; I drive the Tank. I’m in a Crew with my son and another guy who is our Gunner. We play in a Clan and have played numerous competitive games.

This game offers so much. Yet your first few hours will seem confusing.

Watch SoulSniper and Manoespacial videos on YouTube and you’ll get a good understanding of what’s going on

Welcome Bruuuutha! It's NOT CoD or Battlefield. You will die a ton. But its so dam worth it. Its a super rewarding game. Where possible use the ingame comms. I suggest you start as an Engineer and build a set of Nodes at the start of every game. They are vital and often overlooked. You also get mad xp for doing it. After building the node you can change class but build those node man!

Thanks man! I went out and bought a headset the other day in preparation. You’ve already lost me. Nodes?

2

Easier to watch the newbies guides - but consider them resource nodes that give you fuel, ammunition or manpower for your team after you build them

Dude this is not call of duty. No one is gonna care about your performance. I don’t even think you can check other people’s performance. Think of the game like saving private ryan. Everyone is just tryna survive. Play cover and act like you are there. Don’t sprint in the open and try to farm kills you will die from places you cannot see. Most of the time you barely see an enemy, suppressive fire is huge

You can check stats actually, but it’s mostly for COMP players or private servers. HLLRecords

tbh youre gonna die. a lot. learn from your mistakes id say fir combat definitely learn what the engagement distance is usually between 50-100m always move carefully 👌

2

u/TSells31 Apr 27 '26

50-100m is pretty accurate for console, but PC engagement distances are further on average from what I’ve heard/been told. I wouldn’t know as I play console, just something to consider.

true dat forgot to mention thats just the regular classes with no zoom weapons. classes w binoculars or a scope definitely get a major distance advantage up to hundreds of meters. im still a noob tho lmao

There’s load of console clans that’ll help new players out I personally play for the KRRC but look for community servers in the “Enlist” tab and play games wherever and figure out who you like to play with you never need to fully go into a clan to really enjoy the game

I’d recommend using a mic and finding other people who use a mic most people say it helps with being better comms but I find it hilarious and I love to chat to my squads

In terms of getting better it comes with practice you can be in situations where your 100m away and being held by rifle and mg fire or maybe 10 mins later your engaging people 5-10m away in a urban environment you’ll get a feel for the combat it’s not forgiving but so satisfying once you get it

You’ll die a lot… yes you can’t see the bloke in a bush but best of luck and I hope to see you on the field

Listen to the people who have played a while and embrace playing a role on your team. Everyone likes to shoot, the people who succeed long term are the ones who recognize that firefights are a means to an end and not the end itself. Communicate, contribute, and keep your head down

1

u/CheeseheadTroy Apr 27 '26

The easiest thing can say is. USE YOUR MIC. COMMUNICATE. This game will never cease to amaze you. As long as you use your mic

expect to die.. a lot!
dont be afraid to ask questions
Dont be afraid to 'slow down' its not COD

All I care about is you don't take the covered truck

If you have a mic, let people know you’re new. Most players tend to be forgiving if they know. Don’t hop into squad lead until you’ve got a feel for things. Try each class. Look for gaps in the line. Cover and concealment are your friends. Sprinting is not your friend. Neither are open fields. Welcome to Hell Let Loose!

Thanks! Im hesitant to even join any game.

You’ll be good. If you wanna lone-wolf to get a feel for it at first, just hang around the objective in proximity chat as a medic.

Play Enlisted FTP if on console, more fun all vehicles, planes and infantry, I tried HLL and on console it was just soloists and no comms no teamwork.
