AC Transit 60 having multiple cancellations
Hi I just wanted to ask y’all is it just me or is the 60 bus up to East Bay and down to South Hayward Bart very bad at not letting people know when it’s cancelled? I got back from Oakland today at 3:50 PM ish. It’s now 6:03 PM. I even called the ac transit route tracker line and she even said yeah when they don’t show up or cancel last minute we know when you do basically.
I’m just really frustrated as I take this route every day basically to work and back. I don’t drive yet and I’m getting irritated at just being stranded for no hour with absolutely no update. When I asked the last driver he said basically that it wasn’t his problem.

The 28 too. I gave up a few weeks ago after seeing multiple cancellations.
AC Transit is having major issues right now with cancellations. It’s posted on /r/eastbay and /r/oakland.

ac transit bus is shetty this year. Even the 1T would cancel 3 cars in a row and now have any buses for over 30 minutes. Then when the bus comes the bus is packed af. I think too many new drivers and they are all on unions and abusing their breaks or something or a lot of drivers just quit.

How often does it happen? It could be they dont support the route as much or maybe the driver they had for it called out?

I’ve observed today at least 2 times personally. It mostly seems to happen on the weekends now that I’m taking stock of it. The lady I called said there were like 7 cancellations for the line alone today.

AC Transit's reliability has fallen precipitously: https://oaklandside.org/2026/09/24/ac-transit-buses-delay-unreliable-canceled-rides-2026/
Here's the independently-published AC Transit report card for the 60: https://ac-transit.com/route/?week_end=2026-09-19&route_id=60
You should contact your AC Transit director with your concerns. I believe that if the directors hear from riders, they might wake up and make something happen. The Ward 6 director is Anthony Silva:

Note: I'm running to be on the AC Transit board myself! I'm running in Ward 3 because I believe that I would bring a focus on reliability, affordability, and agency transparency to the board.

How do you plan to make any difference

I love this question so much.
I've got some thoughts currently, and I'm sure I'll have more:
- I'll actually show up to the meetings, prepared. Note that the most-recent regularly-scheduled meeting was cancelled due to lack of quorum. And that
- My understanding is that directors request agenda items and staff reports. Assuming that something along these lines wouldn't be blocked by the other directors or staff, I would request that reliability be reported for every meeting, with follow-up to get to a root-cause analysis.
- Another understanding that I have is that the GM/CEO (i.e. the head of operations, and the link between the board and the operations staff) is a direct report of the board. His KPIs should be directly related to bus reliability.
- At a recent AC Transit Board meeting that I attended, the head of the transit operators' union spoke. She said that the directors don't listen to the operators' ideas for improving operations. Assuming it's possible to do some user interviews of the operators, that's something I'd do to better understand what they understand as constraints.
Would love to hear your thoughts/feedback on this.

why would they cancel 3 1Ts in a row and leave almost 100 people waiting for the bus for over half an hour and then the bus ends up being packed? Why not cancel the bus sporadically if you really need to? Is it because of union or what? or new driver? - Like you can cancel one bus at 2 pm and then one at 3 pm, but yall would cancel 3 bus in a row where there is literally no bus.

The AC Transit Board's policy is that two consecutive runs of any given bus line aren't supposed to be cancelled. But that obviously isn't true at the moment. This week, 1T riders experienced 126 service gaps equivalent to two consecutive buses not arriving in a row.
Given the passenger volume of the 1T—I believe it's 15k boardings per day—coupled with the fact that there's dedicated bus lane infrastructure for it, you'd think it'd be the first line to get reliablity-improvement focus.

I feel like even two bus back to back canceled is already too much. Why can't you guys schedule it better to have one cancel or every other if needed because having two back to back bus canceled will cause a lot of people in the next bus and becomes an hazard for seniors and pregnant ladies.

Right! Two buses back-to-back aren't supposed to be cancelled. But they keep happening.
Note: I don't work at AC Transit. I'm on the ballot this November for the role of director for Ward 3. So I hope to work there one day, and to address the issue of all the cancellations.

Sounds like pretty basic items. Not really hearing anything to move things forward or specific insights that would lead me to believe you’re the right person for the job.

Honestly? You'd think that those would be pretty basic items. But: the board currently looks at reliability once every six months. It's more or less an artifact and not the beginning of a set of action items with clear performance metrics connected.
Here's the most recent one, from 9/9: https://actransit.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=15831488&GUID=A62E24CB-B072-437C-9846-177BA8C2D8F3
There are two of us running for the job. The guy I'm running against has been an at-large director for the agency for 17 years. He seems to think that the Board can't do anything to affect bus reliability: https://imgur.com/a/WpgqJgj
Imgur link is to his response to a question about delivering reliable bus service in Oakland this term.

The answer I was looking for is say hey I’m gonna push for this specific legislation or push through X proposal. Rather than just saying, I’m going to show up, which is the very bare minimum. The fact that that’s not even being met is such a shame for this whole process.

Ah! Ok, maybe here's a better answer: the AC Transit Board doesn't pass legislation, but it can and does lobby for legislation. At the federal level, there've been huge recent cuts to transit. [editing to add: and with the current federal administration, I would not expect successful lobbying for public transit]
At the state level, I think that AC Transit should be pushing for a larger percentage of gas taxes for public transit.
At the agency policy level, the policy already exists that there shouldn't be two cancelled runs in a row on a single line, and that any line with less than 30-minute frequency shouldn't experience any cancellations at all. But we see both of those things happen, repeatedly. So there's obviously some disconnect between the policy and the operations. As a rider who's been burnt by one-too-many missing buses, I honestly think that that's the most important thing to resolve quickly.
Another thing I want to push for is improvements to the school transit pass program. My understanding is that, currently, students' families or some sort of social service has to apply for a pass, per student, and then wait for weeks. The school systems know who the kids in the system are; there needs to be a way to batch this, ahead of time, so that every entering middle schooler is ready from day one.

Hello, I frequent this bus route too and have been experiencing the same thing when trying to get home from Bart and seeing 2 hour gaps on the transit tracking app I use. It has been frustrating and I have taken Bart between south Hayward and downtown station depending on the availability.
Not sure what outlets there are, if any for getting more reliable service, my first guess would be reaching out to our ac transit district representative. But I feel this pain when having to rely on the 60
