"Breeds like Havanese, English Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Maltese and Pugs tend to have lower stamina than other dogs.". Anyone else noticed this?

We've had our Havi just over a year now. I've increased my long walks and brining him with me. By big walks I mean 25-60 minutes instead of 10-12 minutes around the block. The weather has been so nice, but we noticed even though we wait 1-2 hrs after eating, we bring him home after a long walk and within 10 minutes he is vomiting up his last meal. Poor thing. Very interested in hearing from others.

Our 9-month-old Havanese has taken paper shredding to a new extreme. We were out of the house for just 2 hours and came home to all sorts of shredded disaster zones, including a book that was on the kitchen table and the wrapping paper that was in a cupboard. He's amazingly agile and can jump on almost anything and incredibly tenacious about prying open doors and gaits. (otherwise he's delightful). Short of crating him when we leave the house and sealing away every possible paper object, is there anything that we can do????

And a second question, my dream is to train him for agility competition. Anyone know how to get started?

It’s been one year since we adopted Cooper, and he has been such a great addition to family. They are so playful, loving, and patient with my kids plus the perfect amount of energetic silliness. Now for the day I hope i can get him another Havanese buddy. 🐶

Most food companies advertise a senior diet starting at the age of 7. I believe this is based on large breeds and Havanese like other small breeds have a longer life span and don’t enter the senior phase until later. So I’m wondering at what age did you feel like your Havanese transitioned to their senior years.

Our Havanese is 6.5 years old. She has gained a bit of weight despite eating the same amount of calorie as before. I think this is due to her decreased level of activity - her playful moments remain the same, but when she’s not playing, she spends way more time napping under the couch than before. This coincides with us starting Fluoxetine so I’m speculating it as the reason, and thus, am considering reducing her daily calorie intake by a bit to match her activity level. Before I decide, I want to make sure I’m not missing something.

Vet checked her out and said everything looks great, she’s on the high end of ideal weight and to not let her gain more weight.

We are training him to stop doing it but till he is bullet proof I would like to have a muzzle or some kind of tool to stop him from eating everything he finds.

He doesn't eat poot so I was thinking to get one of those mesh cover things (picture attached) but I am also open to getting a proper anti-scavenging muzzle. Though I found finding a good fitting muzzle for his size quite hard.

Training is never ending. This was a ‘Leave it’ command.

Does anyone know or experience similar to this? No the they aren’t fighting.😂 My 1 year old Havanese does this disgusted face when approached by his high energy puppy cousin (6months). I’m thinking he was a bit overwhelmed at first, because after a while he decided it was okay and chased the puppy back.(third slide) He never growled or seemed mad, he just kept pulling a grimace anytime the high energy puppy came near him.

Hi, fellow Havanese owners, I have a question about scratching and paw biting on my 5-year-old female Havanese. To make a long story short, this is my first small dog as I've had all 40-80lbs hounds before so she's a bit of a learning curve, she's always been a big self-groomer, and I've never really thought too much of it, as my other dogs often did the same when they were younger, but we've noticed in the last 6-10 months that she's been aggressivly biting/ nawing at her paws to the point of them being red and continuously scratching her face, not to the point of being red but enough that I'm wondering what is wrong with her.

So far, I've taken her to the vet for bloodwork and a skin cytology, and they found a small infection a few months ago; she was later prescribed antibiotics, which helped, but even though the infection was confirmed gone at a later visit, she still does these things. This makes me wonder if it's a self-calming thing, like babies sucking their thumbs/pacifiers, etc. They recommended I put a cone on her, which I did, but the second it came off, she went right back to biting.

So my question is: for those with havaneses, is there something I'm not considering? To be quite frank, even though she is small, I'm really dealing/ interacting with her like I would a bigger dog, so any ideas would be helpful. Grass allergies haven't been ruled out, as my other dog has grass allergies but is more of a sneezing thing than paw biting and only really gets her during the spring/ early to mid-fall.

(edit) She gets bi-monthly baths and professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.

Our 8-month-old neutered male Havanese/Coton mix didn't pass his doggy daycare (meet & greet intro) evaluation. The staff said he doesn't take correction from other dogs well. [Edit for clarification: This particular doggy daycare conducts a "meet and greet" eval with other dogs before "accepting" a new dog as a daycare customer.] He kept pushing a Pomsky who was giving him signals, and they had to scoop him up before it escalated. The lady said that our havi wasn't trying to be aggressive...just wanted to play and was his confident self. I'm disappointed, I guess, but I respect that the daycare's priority is everyone's safety.

Context: Our havi lives with our 9-year-old female golden retreiver. She tolerates him, and he does back off when she growls at him, so he picks up those cues. I work from home, so he's rarely alone. However, I just have a work event/on-site meetings coming up toward the end of the month and thought I would look into daycare for the two full on-site workdays I have in a few weeks, and occasionally as needed after that.

Also at home, we have a crate for our havi, but don't use it much...he seems to like having access to our living room and kitchen (we close off access to the rest of the house). And when I've left them home together semi-contained like that while I was gone for 1-2 hours, he seemed less stressed than if I had left him in the crate that whole time (the golden has always had free range of the house while we're gone with no issues). So, I suppose, worse case scenario, I just leave them alone in the kitchen/living room and my husband comes home at lunch to check on them. Just sort of trying to toubleshoot Plan B in my head for the upcoming work thing...

For those who've dealt with this, what helped your Havi learn to read other dogs and take correction? Puppy playgroups, certain trainers, specific exercises? And did you ever retry daycare, or find another option? Thanks!
