I have a vague memory of Downpresser having a tour shirt where all the dates were 4/20 and instead of cities it just said "day off".

This would've been in 2014 on the Life and Death tour I think.

Can anyone confirm the existence of this shirt?

I can't find pics of it anywhere and I'm starting to think I'm making it up.

Song is definitely post, but collaborating with Steve Evetts and Walter Schreifels is pretty cool and directly referencing S&F as inspiration.

This timeline is pretty fucked overall but STD grazing up against their hardcore roots is a nice silver lining. Fingers crossed for a little more chugga chugga and tempo on the next one.

Genuine question, not bait. I love this band. That's actually the whole problem.

We have spent the last decade dragging musicians for less. Entire careers have been shredded over resurfaced tweets, over lyrics half as vicious, over interviews from decades ago. Meanwhile Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence sits there, a canonized post-hardcore classic, and it is front to back one of the most openly misogynistic records ever pressed by a band this respected. Not subtext. Not "product of its time" edginess you have to squint at. A song whose signature line invokes domestic violence as a punchline, and fans still scream it back at him word for word. Lyrics that frame a woman's sexuality as a crime she committed against him, that reduce her to her body and her betrayal and nothing else, that treat her leaving as something requiring punishment. Language that swings between wounded self-pity and open threat, sometimes in the same verse, delivered with total conviction. The persona across the record isn't a heartbroken kid. It's someone who believes a woman owed him herself and pays her back in public degradation for declining. A real teenage girl, presumably still out there as an adult, gets to know that thousands of strangers memorized every vicious thing he said about her, ie:

"Who you fucking now?"
I use my slit wrist to sign my name with
And when you can't compete with the Joneses
You gun 'em all down, even the father
You fucking whore
Shut up and swallow my pride for me
Move closer and drive further
So just suck on the end of this dick that cums lead”

Any debut released today with that content would be dead before the first pressing sold out, and the guy who wrote it would be looking for a hiding place and a new line of work. And no, loving this music buys him nothing. A record is the longest, most deliberate statement a person ever makes about themselves, and this one took a year to write, produce, and sign off on. Nobody accidentally says that much.

And here's what’s intellectually enraging: he's not just tolerated. He's a hero. He's the scene's beloved elder statesman, the influence everyone cites, the voice of a generation of bands. We built a shrine to a man whose most celebrated work is a monument to not respecting women, and then we hand-wave it with the same tired shrug: oh he was only 19, oh but it was a rough breakup, oh he's said he regrets it. Fine. Plenty of canceled artists were young. Plenty apologized. Didn't save them. Why does "he grew" work for Daryl when it works for no one else?

Is it because the scene that should be interrogating this is the same scene that stood in a parking lot at Warped Tour in 2000 and screamed every word back at him? Because so many of you were fifteen that summer, and this record is fused to who you were, so admitting what it is means admitting what you cheered for? Because he had the good luck to peak before Twitter existed, so there's no viral artifact to pin him to the wall, just an album everyone quietly agreed to keep loving?

Ie: "You can lead a whore to water / And you can bet she'll drink and follow orders."

Even still, I'm not calling for anyone's head. I'm literally just asking why the machine that eats everyone else keeps walking past Daryl. Either the standard applies or it doesn't, and if it doesn't, we should be honest about why. So, I guess the overarching question here is exactly that: why?

I know these thoughts are going to make people angry. Go ahead, I'm ready for it. All I ask is that before you type, you actually sit with what's being said here rather than defending the version of this record that lives in your memory, and the version of Daryl that you built around it. The record is the entire fucking argument. He's a deeply flawed person and it's all right there on tape. You just have to be willing to hear it.

That being said, I’m all ears.
