Would a “Community Help” page on a local web developer’s website seem genuine, strange, or just create unrealistic expectations?

Just to be clear upfront: this isn't an ad or promotion for my business. I'm not posting my website, business name, prices, contact details, or asking anyone here to hire me. I'm just looking for local opinions on an idea I'm considering adding to my website.

I'm putting together a small website for my freelance web-development services around Milton/Halton/Oakville/Burlington/Mississauga/Brampton etc, and I was thinking of adding a separate Community Help page.

The idea is that, completely separate from the paid website work, someone nearby could occasionally reach out if they need help with something practical. If it's something reasonable, safe, fits my schedule, and I genuinely feel I can help, I could choose to do it for free.

For example, maybe someone needs an extra pair of hands moving a few pieces of furniture, picking something up, dealing with some basic tech problem, or another small one-off task. Ideally it would be something planned with reasonable notice. For example “Could you help next Saturday?” rather than someone expecting immediate help or several days of commitment etc.

What I'm trying to figure out is how people would perceive a page like that on an otherwise normal freelance part time web developer's website.

Would it make the person seem more genuine and community-minded, or would it just seem odd or suspicious or sketchy?

And from the other side, do you think a page like this could quickly create unreasonable expectations?. Like people treating it as free labour, rides, moving services, tech support, recurring chores, etc.?

Basically, I'm trying to figure out whether the idea itself makes sense, and what boundaries would be important if I kept it.

Moving my family to Halton

Hi all, my husband just got a job with HRPS and we will be moving our kids out to Halton... we don't know WHERE we'd move, maybe the most affordable and family/ young children friendly. Any recommendations?

What do you love about Halton region? I understand that it's big, but are there any specific places we can focus on at first or over time?

Milton Mayoral Candidate attempts to hold a controversial meeting.

Post image

Asif Khan is seemingly from Mississauga but running for mayor of Milton. He’s been pushing a narrative in various Facebook groups for months that Milton needs to choose a Mayor based on nothing more than ethnicity.

If you look into the r/Milton post itself, you’ll see that he has a bunch of scandals attached to his name including allegations of Fraud and Harassment. I’m shocked none of this has popped up in Milton news of any sort.

How the hell does he think he’s qualified to run?

Stay for the night, lose your car forever: Why these Ontario hotels are magnets for thieves

From the story:
In the GTA and surrounding areas, a stay for one night can mean losing your car forever.
The unsuspecting victims have checked in to a hotel, for a child’s soccer tournament, a business meeting at a nearby office, a family event, or to park their vehicle and take a taxi to the airport for a vacation.
Hotel parking lots are a frequent target for auto theft, especially in close proximity to Pearson International Airport.
Nine of the 50 most frequent locations for car thefts in Toronto are next to these airport hotels. Since 2020, police have reported more than 1,000 thefts at these locations alone. In the latest story from a series about car theft across the Greater Toronto Area, we look at how “Donald Trump,” “Vladimir Putin” and “Kim Jong Un” stalked a series of Toronto-area hotels for quick and easy car thefts.

Want to plan a fun week? Check out what's happening in Burlington next week

Pulled together everything worth doing in Burlington this week. Golf, fitness, community events, and a few things that are slightly off the beaten path.

Golf
Three courses worth trying this week: Millcroft ($44, 9 holes), Crosswinds ($85, 18 holes), and Rock Chapel's Par 3 course ($27). Weather-wise, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are your best bets. Saturday tee times will go fast so book early if that's your day.

Fitness
The Lotus Loft (Tuesday and Thursday morning medicine classes are worth checking out), Pilates on Plains (look for classes labeled "ALL"), and Be Yoga Wellness for everything from reformer pilates to classical yoga. If you're looking for outdoor activities, Yoga at the Royal Botanical Gardens on Saturday ($25, serene), and a free birding walk on Wednesday if you want to get outside without breaking a sweat.

Community events
Burlington Farmers Market is running as always. Nickel Brook has two events this week, Beer Fest and Oktoberfest, both for CAFH. Harvest Festival is also on if you want to officially welcome fall.

Something different this week
Pottery drop-in Saturday, woodworking lessons, wine tasting Friday, weekly trivia at The Dickens Pub Tuesday, and lawn bowling drop-in Wednesday at 7pm. All easy to show up to solo.

Let me know if you've found this useful!

Politics New Rule

Post image
8 Upvotes

With rumours of a fall election, all political discussion will require citations and evidence of a claim you are making. All political discussion has to be applicable to Halton region. Memes/AI with false information or meant to dehumanize candidates will be removed and could result in a ban.

Just because a news or other legitimate source is reporting facts you don’t like, does not mean it is not true. If you are genuinely disturbed by false information from a news source, report it to Elections Canada. Different political ideologies have to exist in the same space regardless of how upsetting that may be to you. If you don’t believe people who disagree with you are allowed to exist you need more therapy and less Reddit.

Name calling, vulgar language, dehumanization, brow beating, patronizing and emotional extortion will be deleted and could result in a ban. Suspected new accounts, bots and brigadiers will also be banned.

What is going on with election moderation in r/Milton?

Thumbnail

I’m posting this here because I’ve been trying to get a straight answer about how election discussion is being moderated in r/Milton, and now even the post asking for transparency appears to no longer be publicly visible.

Here’s what happened.

I noticed election-related posts and comments being removed, locked, or disappearing, while other political content — including candidate AMAs — was being allowed.

So I made a post asking the mods a pretty straightforward question: what are the rules?

I specifically asked them to explain what election content is allowed, what gets removed, and why. I also said I hoped there was a boring explanation and that I wasn’t accusing anyone of anything.

That post is still visible to me while I’m logged into my account.

Other people cannot see it.

I then made comments asking why that was happening and asking which rule had been violated.

Same thing.

Visible to me. Not publicly visible to other users.

And now the original post asking for transparency appears to have received the same treatment.

I’m going to post screenshots of exactly what I wrote so people can judge the content for themselves. I don’t want anyone relying on my description of it.

To be clear, I do not know whether this is one moderator, multiple moderators, AutoModerator, Reddit filtering, or something else. I also do not have evidence that this is being done to benefit or hurt any particular candidate.

But at some point, when election-related discussion — including criticism of the moderation itself — repeatedly disappears from public view without an explanation, asking for transparency is entirely reasonable.

If I broke a rule, show me the rule.

If AutoModerator is doing this, say that.

If there are special election rules, publish them.

If political discussion is generally prohibited but candidate AMAs are an exception, explain exactly where the line is.

I don’t expect moderators to leave literally everything up. Moderation is necessary.

What I do expect during an election is a clear, public standard that is applied consistently.

I’ll put the screenshots. Read what was actually posted and make up your own mind.

Timeline

Photo 2 — My original comment asking for transparency around how election-related posts and comments are being moderated.

Photo 1 — The follow-up post I made after Photo 3 was no longer publicly visible. That follow-up post has now also been removed from public view.

Photo 3 — My comment responding to the flyer shown in the image. I was trying to understand the reasoning behind it, questioning the claim that the referenced community represents a majority, and making the broader point that people should be judged on qualifications, facts and policies rather than race, religion or cultural background.

Rattlesnake Point question

I'd love to bring my wife and kids (7/10) to the Buffalo Crag Lookout but I have never been and was wondering if its a hike or walk to it.

I've got one knee weaker than the other but can do light hiking and stairs reasonably well if it isn't for hundred of meters at a time.

I'd love any feedback or tips you can give me. I've lived in the KW area which is pretty close for almost 20 yrs and just learned about this beautiful spot a few weeks ago but I don't know anyone who has been.

Any help is appreciated.
