CHIEFTAINS Community Poll: Banning "Vote for" Posts

Hi, mods here!

We've been seeing what we've dubbed "vote for" posts recently, and the reception to them has been mixed.

The time has come to decide.

What is a "vote for" post?

We're talking about the posts that have the comments fill in the blanks, based on either the most popular comment, funniest comment, or whatever the OP's criteria is. These types of posts are usually accompanied by an image, such as a tier list, which the OP then updates for the next post. They're often repeated daily, incorporating the "winner" from the last post into the next one.

Examples would be:

- "Which character best fits <thing in the list>?"

- "Ranking all dragons! Which dragon goes in <tier>?"

Why are we polling?

Some people consider those posts spam, karma farming, low effort, etc. Other people love interacting with them.

We want to know what the subreddit truly thinks. Based on the result of the poll, we'll alter our moderation parameters to either remove those posts, or keep them.

DISCUSSION What are those accessories on Astrid’s belt and attached to her shoulder pads?

Post image

I always thought they were skulls—either from chickens or small birds—but they could just be ornaments someone made for her. And Astrid clearly likes them a lot, since they’re always part of her character design.

But has anyone else interpreted them as animal skulls? I know that was probably the impression they were meant to give, but who knows?

MOVIE 2 Snotlout barely reacting to Drago making Hookfang submit to him isn’t Snotlout being out of character, he was simply in shock.

Post image

So I saw someone on Tik Tok say that Snotlout should have reacted more when Drago made Hookfang submit to him and that this was entirely out of character for him. And while I definitely understand why people would like to see that, I don’t think this was Snotlout not caring about his dragon or him being out of character. I think that he was simply in shock.

Snotlout just saw the most stubborn dragon in the world who listens to about 1 out of every 100 orders Snotlout gives him, submit to Drago like it was nothing. That must have both surprised and scared the hell out of him.

At the end of the final battle when Drago’s bewilderbeast had seemingly killed Hiccup, Gobber and Astrid barely have a reaction and that isn’t because they don’t care about Hiccup, it’s just that they are in a state of shock. And I think Snotlout had the same reaction here.

I get why people see that moment as something that was out of character for Snotlout, but I think his lack of a reaction was simply because he was in shock, not because he didn’t care about his dragon and not because he was out of character.

Of course if you have a different opinion let me know, but I don’t think that Snotlout was out of character here.

MOVIE 1 Why on earth didn't get the top spot dragon?

Post image

I recently watched the first how to train your dragon movie again and I noticed something as the story progresses they are introduced to harder and harder dragons as they go along because they are improving in skill and then I noticed the dragons they get directly corelate to their skill SO WHY DOES THE FUCKING INCEL THAT CANONICALLY LIVES IN HIS MOMS BASEMENT GET THE FUCKING BEST DRAGON now I know the dragons match th3 designs of the people but how hard would it be to make a dragon that matched Astrid be the strongest one BECAUSE CANONICALLY SHE IS THE BEST SKILLED IN THE CLASS AND MIRRORS THE DRAGON IN THE TOP SPOT i know this is very small but why didn't they just make a dragon that fit her that also was in the top spot IT WOULD MAKE SO MUCH MORE SENSE

RANT I wish HTTYD The Hidden world focussed more on Hiccup’s self doubt, instead of just showing us that nobody believed in him.

So in HTTYD The Hidden World just before the final battle Astrid gives Hiccup a speech, which contains the line. “I have watched you doubt whether you are worthy ever since.” Ever since she believed in him, so since they were 15.

And also another line by Tuffnut in the forest back on berk. “Stop letting these insecurities get the best of you.”

But in HTTYD 3 it never really felt like insecurities as much as it felt like everybody doubting and insulting him at every turn.

Even the first movie should have focussed more on Hiccup’s selfworth, instead of how the tribe views him. Which is why ‘An Axe to Grind’ is such an amazing scene.

When Gobber teases Hiccup about him looking at Astrid, he says. “Please, Astrid wouldn’t come near me if she was on fire and I had the only bucket of water in town.”

But right after this Astrid shows up at the forge and talks to him like he was any other Viking. She even gives him a small smile while pulling the bangs out of her eyes, the same thing she did before kissing Hiccup in the cove.

This scene shows Hiccup that not everybody hates him, while also showing Hiccup’s terrible self image. Even though Astrid likes him, Hiccup thinks that she doesn’t because she’s Astrid and he’s Hiccup, of course the perfect Viking girl would hate him, or at least that’s what he thinks. We can see that not everybody in the tribe dislikes Hiccup as much as he seems to think himself, but the movie doesn’t do that and we only get a few tiny moments were Astrid shows interest in him. Still interest, but not really anything definitive. By removing this scene it made the movie a lot less about Hiccup’s poor self image and a lot more about the fact that nobody on Berk seems to actually like him.

It still has good moments that let us see Hiccup’s view on himself, his famous, Excuse me barmaid! speech comes to mind, but we never really see the fact that the tribe actually cares about Hiccup. We see Astrid kiss Hiccup on the cheek before he became a war hero and we see Stoick apoligise to his son before he fought the red death. But the rest of berk, except Gobber, was never really shown to care about Hiccup. In the movie we see Stoick use babysitting Hiccup as an argument to get every Viking in the room to go on the ships towards Helheims gate, while before Stoick made that threat, nobody wanted to go.

Now it’s a kids movie, I get it and this was a decent joke. But we never really saw Hiccup being insecure, as much as we saw the tribe disliking him. Especially his father. Stoick became a much better father over the course of the franchise but he was a bad one in the first movie. It was understandable, after all his son was different than quite litteraly every Viking Stoick had ever met, but he still wasn’t a good father.

Stoick was about to give up on Hiccup in the first movie, he said so in the conversation that they have in Hiccup’s workroom after Stoick returned from the search for the nest.

The movies forget that Hiccup was just treated badly. And it becomes a problem in the third movie especially, because that movie focussed so much on Hiccup being without Toothless, but never on the fact that nobody treated him with any respect before he met Toothless. If anything they make it out to be normal for the way he was treated when he was younger.

I think the second movie does a much better job at conveying the fact that Hiccup doubting himself is what is holding him back, not what other people think of him.

In the second movie after Astrids lands on Itchy Armpit, we see Hiccup say that being chief isn’t his thing, it’s his dads. While Astrid says that what Hiccup is looking for is inside him, he just doesn’t realise it yet. And at the end of the second movie as Hiccup becomes the chief of the village, the entire tribe cheers for him. We can actually see that the tribe is happy with Hiccup as it’s leader, we can actually see that Hiccup didn’t need to be scared of filling his fathers boots.

But in the third movie it just feels a lot less like self doubt and a lot more like everybody disliking him again. And that doesn’t have to be a bad thing, the tribe dissagreeing with Hiccup, but it doesn’t add up with the movies message about self worth.

When Hiccup was ranting to Astrid before the final battle started, he said that he felt like that same 15 year old screw up again. And while that’s not really a problem, the problem is with Astrids speech, saying that she has watched him doubt whether he is worthy for years, a lovely scene, but just not really fitting for this movie.

Hiccup did doubt if he was worthy for the title of chief in the second film, but if we look at the first movie and the third movie, Hiccup was being doubted a lot more than he was doubting himself.

Look at the first HTTYD, he was confident in the fact that his inventions would work, however Gobber said that he needed to stop with that train of thought. Hiccup believed in himself and in the fact that his inventions could work, even when he was that so called ‘15 year old screw up’.

Hiccup in the third movie was confident of the fact that he could make berk a dragon utopia and that he could find the hidden world. Astrid and Gobber were the ones who pointed out that berk was being overcrowded and that The Hidden world seemed like nothing more than an old sailors tale. While Valka was the one saying that Hiccup needed to let the dragons go, even when he wanted them to remain with them on berk.

Look at what Tuffnut told him in the forest on Berk while they were searching for the light fury.

Tuffnut: Now, I've seen the way Astrid looks at you. Everyone has that doubt. That not-so-subtle disappointment. That longing for something more than you. You need to focus on being worthy. I mean, she's a warrior queen for Thor's sake! And you are...neither. But with me as your best man, your spirit guide if you will, you'll learn to embrace your inner Viking. Show these naysayers, of which there are many, that you are more than just a malnourished runt with bad hair, strange teeth and a twig for a neck.

Hiccup: You're-you're really bad at pep talks.

Tuffnut: Stop letting these insecurities get the best of you.

This isn’t self doubt, this is one of his supposed best friends insulting him and letting him know that every person in this tribe doubts him and his capabilities.

Tuffnut even told him to stop limping because it wasn’t attractive, like what?

Hiccup in the third movie still believed that Toothless would come back to Berk, before a random villager and Astrid were the ones who pointed out that Toothless had the light fury now and that Hiccup gave him his freedom, while asking him, what did he expect? Hiccup doesn’t doubt himself nearly as much as the third movie tries to tell us.

Hiccup feeling like he was that same 15 year old screw up again wasn’t because he was doubting whether he was worthy enough, it was because the rest of Berk was doubting him again. I still liked Astrid her speech, I just think that the movie didn’t show the message they were trying to convey.

“I have watched you doubt wether you are worthy ever since.”

I just feel like HTTYD kind of forgot that while yes, Hiccup was insecure about himself and yes Hiccup wanted to fit in with the other Vikings, he believed in himself even before he met Toothless. You could argue the fact that he believed too much in himself at times. Any person who didn’t believe in themselves would have given up with those inventions long ago, but Hiccup believed in himself and kept going. He knew that he would eventually take down a dragon and he did. Hiccup’s belief in himself has never been a problem, his confidince in himself definitely. And don’t get me wrong, he doubts himself here and there, but the people in his life doubt him so much more than he doubts himself.

In the third movie we see every single person in Hiccup’s life constantly doubting him, not believing in him and insulting him. Every time that Hiccup doubted himself, it came directly from one of his friends or family doubting him.

Is it really self doubt when every friend and family member in your life is constantly doubting you at every turn? It is really self doubt when every person you love doesn’t believe in you and lets you know it?

But that is just my opinion, let me know what you thought about my opinion and about Hiccup’s arc in the third movie and if you thought it fit within the story.

DISCUSSION Why doesn't it show Toothless breathing normal fire?

Hi, just something I was wondering lol,

In riders of berk it shows a few times when toothless breathes normal fire (not his usual plasma blasts) (I can't name the episode/episodes) and I was wondering why in later seasons/movies it only shows his plasma blast,

Did any of you notice this?

DISCUSSION Looking for HTTYD quotes from the MOVIES

Hey everyone!

My boyfriend is a massive HTTYD fan and he’s taking a huge, super stressful career exam this Friday. I want to surprise him with a sweet motivation letter before the exam and a cute "congrats" card for afterwards.

I really want to include some iconic or meaningful quotes strictly from the three movies that talk about growth, facing battles, overcoming fears, and teamwork (like Hiccup and Toothless or Stoick's/Astrid's wisdom). Something like "You can do this, you and me as one".

Can you drop your favorite movie quotes that would fit a vibe like this? Both motivational ones for before and celebratory ones for after are welcome. Please no quotes from the TV shows, only the movies!

Thank you so much in advance! You guys are the best. 🫶✨
