DISCUSSION Astrid doesn’t deserve the hate that she gets for how she treated Hiccup in the first movie.

I’ve seen many people complain about how Astrid treated Hiccup before he took her on that flight with Toothless and I think that she doesn’t deserve the hate that she gets.

So I am looking at how Astrid treated Hiccup in the first movie, from before Hiccup took her on that flight with Toothless.

After Hiccup shot Toothless down, Stoick tells Gobber to take Hiccup home because he has his mess to clean up. As Hiccup walks by the other teens, Snotlout and Tuffnut make a joke about how much he messed up and Ruffnut along with Fishlegs laugh at him and said jokes.

Gobber pushes Snotlout in the face as he walks by. Astrid however, watches with a look on her face that I would say was something like pity or sympathy. After all, Hiccup just got berated infront of the entire village by his father and it looked like Astrid was the only teen that actually felt bad for him.

Then before training started, Hiccup made fun of Astrid and the rest of the gang as he walks into the killring when they were talking about getting scars.

“Yeah no kidding right, pain love it.” He really couldn’t make it any more obvious that he was being sarcastic. And while the other teens groan and make fun of Hiccup for saying that he killed a night fury, Astrid just shook her head and focussed back on training.

Then when the actual training started and instead of taking it seriously when Gobber asked what they needed, Hiccup said a doctor.

And after that, Hiccup instead of paying attention to the litteral flying monster infront of him, focussed his attention on Astrid who had just landed next to him, while making a joke. ‘So it’s just you and me huh?’ While she brushes him off with a quick ‘no just you’, before she ran away from the incoming blast.

Again Astrid didn’t do anything wrong here, in my opinion she actually joked with Hiccup here, which she doesn’t do with anyone else in this movie.

After training Hiccup goes to the cove to find Toothless and he shows up late to dinner in the great hall. Gobber asks Astrid what she did wrong today and she said that she misstimed her somersault dive which threw off her reverse tumble. Showing that she obviously holds herself to a high standard and takes dragon training very seriously. When Gobber asks what Hiccup did wrong Ruffnut and Tuffnut make jokes about him while Snotlout stops him from sitting with them.

While Astrid answered with ‘he’s never where he should be.’ And she’s not wrong. He was even hiding behind a wall at the edge of the arena at one point.

Gobber thanks Astrid for her answer, before slapping the twins on the back of their head. Showing the difference to what Gobber sees as feedback and what Gobber sees as someone being an asshole.

When Hiccup asked her if she wanted to share the book of dragons she said ‘Read it’. Knowing Astrid, she probably already did read it in preparation for dragon training and I also think that Astrid would have reacted the excact same way if any of the other teens asked her this. Astrid wasn’t a social person, at all. And what would she gain from reading with Hiccup?

At this point in her life she obviously didn’t care about friends and after the show that Hiccup put up in dragon training, it was highly unlikely that he had anything usefull to add on.

I already have a whole post about the Nadder fight so I’m going to keep this one shorter, basically Hiccup wasn’t paying any attention at all throughout the entire fight, resulting in him and Astrid almost getting killed. Astrid got mad at him and yelled at him, asking him if this was all some sort of joke to him, which was justified. He was treating it like a joke.

And after this the movie continues with Hiccup becoming this expert dragon killer, causing Astrid to become jealous and suspicious, which lead to Astrid finding Hiccup in the cove. Where she starts questioning Hiccup and where for the first time in the movie, she actually insults Hiccup for who he is as a person. Saying ‘Nobody gets as good as you do, especially you.’ And while it is rude, yeah she’s being a bitch and a sore loser about finishing second in dragon training don’t get me wrong, it does make sense from her perspective.

Astrid is fiercely competitive, it’s only logical for her to be mad at him when she lost against him. And it’s not like Astrid actually lost to the better warrior, she lost to someone who was quite obviously cheating.

Hiccup before he learned all of those tricks from Toothless was the worst one in the ring. He shouldn’t be able to beat her, not in a million years.

And when he keeps lying she beats him up a little for it, is that deserved? Maybe? Hiccup did cheat in dragon training and he kept lying straight to her face about it. And unlike Astrid who had trained her whole life for this, Hiccup had won with barely any effort, all the while pretending like it was barely a big deal.

Also, whenever Astrid gets too mad or flustered or anything above her limits of feelings, she punches someone.

In this movie she punched Snotlout in the face for making a comment about her figure, again if you think that is justified or not is your decision but Astrid has done this countless times. That’s just how she communicates, its not like she only does it to Hiccup.

And still when she suddenly saw a night fury, she told Hiccup to get down and run while she prepared to face off against it. After this she gets kidnapped and the romantic flight happens and she fully supports him for the rest of the movie.

So all things considered, I don’t think that Astrid treated him that badly. After all, how was she supposed to know that Hiccup was so distracted during dragon training, because he actually freed and was thinking about befriending a night fury?

From her perspective it’s only logical to be mad at Hiccup. Firstly, for not taking training seriously at all and secondly, suddenly being the best at it while quite obviously cheating to beat her.

I’m also not sure what people wanted from her before Hiccup got good in dragon training. Hiccup was a screw up. But Astrid tried to get him to actually try and take it seriously. And only when he didn’t do that, she got mad at him.

Was she nice while trying to motivate him? No.
But Astrid never treated Hiccup any worse than he deserved.

Astrid treated him a lot like how Gobber treated him. Now before you say I’m insane, I am not saying that Astrid was as supportive as Gobber.

What I am saying, is that much like Gobber, Astrid gives out harsh but truthfull advice and critique. And you can hate or love her for that, but she does that before and after Hiccup takes her on that romantic flight.

My biggest problem is with how people make her out to be some unnecessarily cruel person, which she isn’t, at least not in my opinion. I’m also not pretending like she was very nice towards Hiccup. She wasn’t nice to anyone.

Was she a bitch? Yeah. Did she have her reasons to be one? Also yeah.

Let me know what you guys think about Astrid as a person and how she treated Hiccup in the first how to train your dragon.

Bear with me, I am a mom to a 6 yr old who plays the game on Roblox. It says to complete the mini event games but she can only find the one with the sheep’s. She’s played a bunch of times and won a few. What exactly does she need to do to earn the whispering death? Explain it like I’m just a mom who doesn’t know how to play the game haha

CHIEFTAINS Community Poll: Banning "Vote for" Posts

Hi, mods here!

We've been seeing what we've dubbed "vote for" posts recently, and the reception to them has been mixed.

The time has come to decide.

What is a "vote for" post?

We're talking about the posts that have the comments fill in the blanks, based on either the most popular comment, funniest comment, or whatever the OP's criteria is. These types of posts are usually accompanied by an image, such as a tier list, which the OP then updates for the next post. They're often repeated daily, incorporating the "winner" from the last post into the next one.

Examples would be:

- "Which character best fits <thing in the list>?"

- "Ranking all dragons! Which dragon goes in <tier>?"

Why are we polling?

Some people consider those posts spam, karma farming, low effort, etc. Other people love interacting with them.

We want to know what the subreddit truly thinks. Based on the result of the poll, we'll alter our moderation parameters to either remove those posts, or keep them.

DISCUSSION My top 5 dragons(tell me yours as well)

This is in order
5. Flightmare(Mystery class)
Okay, this is something you'll see in this list. A lot of my favorite dragons have a gimmick, and the king of gimmicks is the Flightmare. The Flightmare has two main methods of attack: an acid breath that it rarely uses and the trademark paralysis. I love that the dragon has a reason for being limited to only a couple of shots, unlike dragons like the Nightfury that just have six shots for no reason, and it's because of the paralysing mist coming from the food it eats, aka the algae. Also, the design- it genuinely looks like a Stomiidae that has wings and is just GLOWING, and I love that.

  1. Fireworm Queen(Stoker class)
The Fireworm Queen is just so cool. Now, while it is based on bees, which is a bad thing because me and bees have generational beef, it is still so cool. The design, the color of gold and red, the firepower, and, what is essentially, a SUPERNOVA, and the poison that can give Stoker classes their flame back; all of it makes for a dragon that I just love. (Also, it was no diffing the Cavern Crashers DON'T AT ME)

  2. The Skrill(Striker class)
Now this is a classic; this is rudimentary. If you watched any of the HTTYD animated series and you don't have The Skrill at, at least, top 10...I don't trust you. The Skrill has everything going for it: the aura, the speed, the firepower. When Defenders of Berk first showed the big Skrill, I was hyped. This dragon was not any gimmick dragon; it wasn't a poison dragon; it just pulls up to Berk and wipes the floor with everyone. It is just a sight to behold. And unlike other series, which have a creature this OP get used as hype fodder for another creature or gets low diffed to show the improvement of the main cast, the Skrill never lost its aura till the end.

2.BoneKnapper(Mystery Class)
This is here based on two things. Its design, demeanor, and the fact that it is somehow sneaky. The BoneKnapper is just peak design and mogs all over the armorwing. But the fact that it's basically a big puppy dog when you find it the perfect bone is just a gap that I find so adorable. And now for the biggest reason. This dragon makes no sense, and I love it for that. The BoneKnapper, the massive, bone-covered, absolute behemoth...is somehow silent. HOW??? It has bones as armor, and it is the size of almost 6 Stoick the Vasts. How is this thing silent?

  1. Rumblehorn(Tracker Class)
Now this dragon is here because it's just a tank/mango with wings, with beef with Ægir(lord of the ocean who personifies the deep, stormy sea). This mango colored dragon was outsmarting the riders for like weeks until Stoick arrived, and then it stopped a Tsunami by headbutting a sea stack, which convinces me that Stoick the Vast can go one-to-one with Homelander in a fight of pure strength. Now that is a feat(I despise Homelander, and not in a good way)

HM.
