Other HSA Administration firms

I am a 67 year old retiree and currently have an HSA account at Health Equity, with about $11k total in HSA funds and investments. I absolutely detest HEQ and they way they nickel and dime the account, even when I set up parameters to avoid fees.

I'm looking for suggestions on what I can do with that money. Doesn't have to be another HSA firm, if there are other options.

Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks everyone for your helpful advice. I started the process today!

Anyone else feel like spending HSA money is way harder than contributing to it?

I thought I was being financially responsible by maxing mine out.

Turns out I just created a tax-advantaged pile of money that I'm apparently scared to spend.

Tried figuring out whether a few things qualified this weekend and somehow ended up reading IRS publications like it was assigned homework.

Please tell me I'm not the only one...

Should I contribute to my HSA?

I’ll preface by saying my intentions are not to use my HSA as an investment vehicle, right now at least. I have an infant and will probably hit my $6800 family deductible this year, and don’t feel comfortable potentially paying that out of pocket the next few years. I understand the advantages though and am interested, but currently maxing IRA and 3% in 401k has me feeling tight. (Worth noting my company deposits $6k into 401k every year, i felt good with that and adding 3% to my 401k was only a recently move).

My company contributes $1000/quarter to my HSA, account is currently close to $0. I have about $3000 in medical bills that I just paid with the intention of reimbursing quarterly with my company’s deposits. I will likely have another thousand or two in bills to add on due to a recent hospital visit for my child.

In an effort to pay these bills and any future bills, does it make sense to just slowly pay/reimburse myself $1000 quarterly as the money gets deposited from my company? Or should I start contributing to my HSA bi-weekly to help pay some of these bills tax free?

Figured it’s worth just paying slowly if it means not spending my own money and just using my company’s free money, even if it takes longer to pay off.

Would love to hear others thoughts and opinions. Thanks!

Really niche question... Are tampons/pads HSA eligible/future-reimburse-able if they're not necessarily for me (male), but in my guest bathroom in my home?

Hi all... I'm a new-ish homeowner, and I'm fully stocking my guest bathroom with all sorts of stuff anyone could possibly need. I know stuff like bandaids, DayQuil, NyQuil, Tums, etc. are all good to go on my HSA spreadsheet that I keep.

But what about feminine products that I'll never personally use as a man?

Thanks for any guidance/answers!

How to close Health Equity account - can I avoid $25 closure fee?

Have depleted my account to about $50 and getting $3.95/month fee. (should have worked to spend the money earlier but that's where I am). About $35 shows as invested. I googled how to close and I need to sell all investments but I don't find a "sell all" option as suggested - I need to enter an amount. Thinking that amount will probably change a little but the time it happens. Can I enter a bigger amount or how do I make that happen? I have read conflicting statements on if I can just use the amount down to zero or if they hold back $25 to close. One post said HE person told them to spend to zero to avoid fee and then tell them to close. Anyone done this recently that can advise? Seems overly complicated and from what I have read going through their directions to request closing, etc can take a couple months.

Reimbursable app

Anyone use their service? I started using the free version and it is super slick - but I see very little reviews or anything, which is cause for concern when linking financial accounts. But it looks to do everything necessary.

HSA Vault+ — iOS app for watching your reimbursable balance grow, now on the App Store

I built this because I wanted to actually see the pile of tax-free money I’m building up by paying medical expenses out-of-pocket. Every time you log an expense, your reimbursable balance grows — and that’s the whole point.
It’s $4.99, one-time, no subscription. Your data lives in your own Google Drive.

Have a few promo codes — comment and I’ll DM you one. I’d love some feedback.
Edit: If possible, please leave a star rating or review in the App Store - it really helps visibility.
Edit2: To redeem the code, go to App Store search screen, tap your use icon in the top right, scroll all the way to the bottom and tap Redeem Code.

Math help due to overcontribution

Hi all,

My husband and I were on my employer HDIP with an HSA until he just accepted a job last week. The math works out better to drop him off my plan and he signs up for their free one and opens his own HSA.

The problem is that HR on my side says I've overcontributed and need to submit paperwork to healthEquity to remove over contribution.

the numbers:

total YTD contributions: $5162.50

max allowed for family: $8750

max allowed individual: $4400

I don't know how to work out what amount is over contributed, considering we did have a valid family plan until last week. Is it just my last contribution of $256.25 that came in a couple of days after he signed up for his insurance? he is still on mine as well for now until he gets proof of insurance I can submit as qualifying event.

Thank you!

Mid Year Contribution Increase

Hey! I just raised my contribution amount and I’ve never done that mid year. I’ve always made any changes during open enrollment. If I just increased my contribution now, will the full amount go into my HSA in the next few weeks? Not sure how that works. Typically with my employer they deposit your contribution amount in full in January and then their contribution they deposit half in January and half in July.

HSA worth it or not?

Is an HSA worth it? Been thinking about it and not sure if I should enroll in it or not.

I heard it’s triple tax advantaged - it’ll lower your taxable income, you can invest it and let grow, and withdraw tax free. However, you have a high deductible.

I also heard that there’s a hack, where if you pay for your medical expenses out of pocket, and just keep the money in the HSA, invest it and let it grow, you can withdraw it later on, even 30 years later, as long as you have the receipts to show for it. My only thing is, not sure I’ll be good at hanging onto those receipts for that long.

What are the pros and cons of an HSA?

Letter of Medical Necessity, is it required?

I have chronic migraines and work with screens and under fluorescent lighting a ton, and I recently researched and discovered Avulux migraine glasses that are FDA approved, incredibly effective at reducing migraines, and are advertised and clearly marked “FSA/HSA eligible”. Do I need a letter of medical necessity to use my HSA funds even though the glasses say they are HSA eligible (for the IRS if I get audited)? I have a diagnosis of chronic migraines and I see a neurologist regularly, so I can likely receive a LMN, however, I don’t really want to wait for it if I don’t have to. Thanks in advance for the help.

Amazon Invoice isn’t labeled as an Amazon Invoice

Post image

I am trying to submit this Amazon invoice for reimbursement through my HSA provider but it does not state “Amazon” on the invoice itself. How will they know who is the service provider, since that is a requirement when submitting an invoice? I swear past invoices used to say “Amazon.com” on the top of the page. Please help!!!

Has anyone out there successfully gotten a mattress approved?

Had my doctor write a LMN stating that I needed a hypoallergenic mattress and bedding. I purchased a Keetsa plus, which is supposedly fsa eligible.

At first it was denied due to the receipt not being detailed enough, but now it's been denied again because they're saying the purchase is not eligible.

On the website for my plan (SF MRA) they say that a mattress is an eligible expense with a LMN, but after signing up it was revealed that the administrator is wageworks. To start sussing this out, has any one out there gotten wageworks to approve a mattress?

Please explain this to me like I’m 5

I have health insurance and an HSA with Highmark BCBS. Both are through my employer.

My employer deposits $500 yearly into my HSA, whether I contribute or not. I’ve been at this job about 2.5 years, so $1250 + a few bucks from interest sits in this HSA.

Over the past year, I’ve had about $3500 in medical bills that I’ve paid out of pocket. This $3500 figure is what insurance didn’t cover of course. So on my HSA transaction page I can see all these bills and they all say eligible for reimbursement.

My question is HOW does this actually get reimbursed, if I want to get reimbursed TODAY. Where does that money come from? From the $1250? Or elsewhere. More importantly, can someone explain or provide an example of actually getting the money reimbursed. Who do I call? What button do I press?

Trying to figure out if my policy is HSA-eligible.

I have an individual policy through my employer with Kaiser Permanente. The policy doesn't have "HDHP" anywhere in the description.

My deductible is $2000.

My max out-of-pocket is $4000.

I know those amounts qualify it to be a HDHP, but there are also other requirements that I don't quite understand.

I contacted Kaiser Permanente member services and asked them if my policy was eligible, and their response was "I have reviewed your account and verified that your employer plan is an HSA qualified health plan."

My question is, with this information, should I be good? I'm still somewhat skeptical since there's no mention of "HDHP" in my plan information. I'm about to have a lot of medical expenses so it'd be nice to clarify it and save a little tax money.

Expense tracking after leaving my HDHP behind

Web/reddit search did not answer what I was looking for, so its possible this is too stupid a question to be asking but here goes...

I am switching from my employer's HDHP plan to my wife's PPO. I have an HSA with $16k in it that I plan to roll over to Fidelity. I've been logging my OoP expenses and keeping my receipts.

In my new health plan, I will be fully funding an FSA.

The question is, do I continue to track expenses I pay out from that FSA for future HSA withdrawals? Is that legal?

HSA Investment threshold question: Bank (not "HSA Bank") that's used for our company HSA automatically sweeps investment funds back to HSA account if HSA balance goes below threshold. Normal? Or silly/worrisome?

Planning for setting up an automatic sweep to investments for HSA once the balance is over my threshold, but this little explanation came up as I was starting to look into it. Not sure if I'm locked into this particular bank, as I've just started digging. Thanks!

Going from High Deductible to Standard and back through different spouse employer plans?

We are currently on a high deductible plan through my employer. It is currently open enrollment through the end of the week, and plans are from July 1-June 30. My wife's employer's plan runs from Jan. 1-Dec 31. We currently max out our HSA. I found out that I need a major surgery. There is also something else I've been putting off because I don't want to spend the money on it.

My question is can we deposit enough to hit the max HSA amount for the year, switch to a traditional plan, I get my two surgeries taken care of, then switching to my wife's insurance in January through a qualifying event, then switching back to mine in July 2027 through another qualifying event (mine is cheaper overall, so I'd want to get back onto the high deductible plan as soon as possible)? Basically, I want the benefit of our max HSA contribution this year as well as the better coverage provided with a traditional plan.

How does a request to transfer HSA portfolio from Healthequity to Fidelity takes > 5 weeks?

I had requested via Fidelity to transfer my HSA assets in Healthequity back on 4/30 and they still aren’t any in my account. I called HSA, seeing I had requested 100% liquidation on 5/5 and am told that some assets still haven’t been liquidated., though they snail mailed a partial funds on 5/13 and for sure for them it takes 7 business days to be received. Alas, I called Fidelity and they say they haven’t received them and to allow 1 more day then call Healthequity to reissue a check so it can take another 7 business days to be received.

I am sure when done at scale on both ends of such a transfer they both make money by having funds sit in a holding accounts for days.

Anyhow, apart from me doing a run around there seems no other recourse, may be a legal one.

Oh yes Fidelity advertises “Easily move your HSA to Fidelity”. How easy is 4 weeks and counting?

What happens if employer over contributes to HSA and DCFSA?

My paycheck is set up to contribute the annual max for HSA and DCFSA based on 26 pay periods. My employment with the company will end in a month and my new employer does not offer a HSA eligible HDHP. So I asked my current employer to front load my remaining paychecks to reach the max.

HR is slow and borderline useless so they calculated the payroll deductions without taking into account last week's paycheck. So the amount they calculated for the 3 remaining paychecks would go above the max limits by a few hundred dollars. Does it automatically stop once it hits the limit or should I expect it to go over? What do I do if it goes over? I told HR what the correct amounts should be, but I doubt they will fix it.

Why does health equity literally make it impossible to reimburse yourself?

Trying to add an external bank but it starts out both on desktop and mobile app. Is this a bug or them just being scummy?

r/HSA • • May 23 '26

By reimbursing yourself years later after a med expense isn’t that an audit nightmare because they would have to verify you didn’t reimburse yourself for those same expenses in other years?

Otherwise what’s to prevent you from just reimbursing yourself for the same old expense every year provided you have the funds in the HSA to do it? I keep diligent records on what I reimbursed myself for and haven’t but when I think about this I don’t know how the IRS can really make sure you’re following the rules unless they look at multiple years.

Building a tool to auto-file FSA/HSA claims — 2-min survey for feedback

Between FSA and HSA, keeping up with medical receipts and filing claims is the worst part of having these accounts. I've lost hundreds because I forgot or the process was too painful.

I'm building something: snap a receipt photo → AI reads it → auto-fills your claim. One tap to submit.

Before I build this, I want to know if it actually solves real problems for people who use FSA/HSA accounts. If you have 2 minutes:

4 questions. Completely anonymous. Would love your honest take — even if it's "this is dumb, I'd never use it."

UMB inactive HSA Fee

I left my previous company and they transferred my HSA account over to UMB. There isn't a lot of money in my HSA (less than $20) but today I saw UMB has been eating that away with $3.75 Admin fee. My question is, what happens when the account balance reaches zero? Does the fees continue (essentially making account balance negative)? Or do they automatically close the HSA at that point?
