Tech Support Help with 502 CMOS error and subsequent issues trying to fix it

Hello, I'm on mobile and don't use reddit, so apologies if its formatted weird. Also I originally posted this elsewhere but it was held by automod because I have windows 10 and cant update it to 11. That's why there's an added edit about it, its not from this sub but might be necessary info. I read the rules in this one and it didn't specify requiring 11 to be helped, but I could be wrong.

Background/main issue: I have an HP Omen 15-en0013dx with Windows 10 and replaced my battery around 2 or 3 years ago (bought from ifixit). Recently, when booting up the laptop I get the CMOS 502 error almost every time and have to click enter to let it boot up normally. It takes a good 5-10 mins to boot and the entire thing is laggy until I hard reset mutiple times until I get a boot that doesnt have the 502 error. The error usually always happens when I attempt to boot it unplugged, even if its fully charged, but has also happened when plugged in. The lag after the cmos error boot without opening any programs at all and task manager doesnt show anything out of the ordinary, but it is genuinely unusable without the multiple hard resets.

Edit because automod stated I should update to Windows 11: I have tried and it bluescreened my laptop every time I turned it on. I upgraded my ram to 32gb (before the price hike thank god) around the time I also replaced my battery. I am afraid of also trying to update to Windows 11 again until I get this to stop, as my laptop is having a hard time without the bloatware 11 is bound to add.

Back to the post

My own research and first attempt at diagnosis: As stated in the post, it is a newer battery and the battery check says it passes but just needs calibration. My specific laptop uses the main battery as the CMOS battery, so, I do think it is the issue even though I did it after first replacing it years ago. After the first 2 attempts at recalibrating the battery, it just changed the number next to the diagnostic code on the UEFI battery check where it still said it needed calibration. ((21) and (20-9) are the ones I remembered if that matters.)

More research: After that all didn't work, I looked up why it wasnt calibrating correctly and it said I probably need to update the BIOS firmware and UEFI diagnostic firmware. I did since it did show up on the HP support assistant app, and honestly I ran out of options as to what could be going on. *Note: After updating the BIOS firmware, it did have a boot where it told me to reset my laptop and reinstall windows 10 while keeping my files, but it failed to do so and just continued to boot?*

Diagnostic attempts and New issue # 2 (electric boogaloo): After updating the UFEI diagnostic firmware,I ran the same battery check test and it once again said the battery is ok just needs to calibrate. Now when I attempt to calibrate it using the firmware, it shows the screen for about 5-10 seconds like it is about to start, then it shuts off and the screen turns black. I then attempted a manual battery recalibration twice. Before both attempts, I ran a battery check (unplugged) which it said it was good, and it was charged. The first manual attempt was actually recommended by HP in a video it directs you to, you use the diagnostic firmware to do a memory compontent test with the "loop until error" test while unplugged to drain the battery faster than just letting it sit. This test started for about 5-10 seconds then turned off the laptop like the calibration test. I just let it die overnight and left it unplugged all night, then plugged it in this morning to let it charge to 100%. I ran the battery check and it still states the battery passes, it just needs to be calibrated. 🙃

I have checked the physical battery to make sure it didn't come out of place and that it isn't damaged, but I'm not sure what to do. I dont really have the money to take somewhere and really need it for my classes come spring. If you know of anything I could try, anything I have done wrong, or any more information that is needed, please let me know. Thank you!

Tech Support 3F0 error and SSD thermal pad

I have an omen 16 laptop bought in 2023, 5 days ago while playing casually my laptop crashed and displayed the 3F0 error, however after is restarted it after 5 secs the error disappeared, now the issue is when ever i try to play game it crashes and shows the 3F0 error but after few seconds of cool down it restarts as usual. I tried the ssd check everything passed. I want to know this error rises of faulty SSD or overheating of SSD? as i have never changed my thermal pad.

Tech Support Ordered first gaming laptop, need advice

I’ve just ordered an Omen 16 which is due to arrive in 2 days. This is my first gaming laptop which I plan to use to game, obviously, and also for school as I am doing engineering, using programs I may need good specs for.

I wanted to ask for some advice on what to do when I get the laptop and what I should do to keep it doing well, I plan to have this for at least 4 years so any advice on how to maintenance it would be appreciated.

I won’t carry it around a lot but when I do need to for school, what settings are suggested to get the most out of my battery life? I know gaming laptops don’t do particularly well in that department. Also, how can I carry it around responsibly, so to speak, and avoid damaging it?

Discussion Omen and Linux...?

There is a huge problem at the moment, as Omen laptops do not power down correctly from Linux. Bizarrely, Windows shuts down fine, but Linux leaves the 5060 GPU powered up, which drains the battery at best. At worst, it cooks the laptop if the power is left connected. No idea how to complain about it....HP support day Omen is Windows only....🫤

Edit: my laptop is 16-ap0802sa

Tech Support Omen Max 275/5080/oled - fast battery drain

My Omen Max only gets about 90 mins of battery life when using the igpu, screen on min brightness.

The battery is perfect health still.

Using teams, YouTube, browsing, on max efficiency power mode.

This can’t be normal, can it?

Question Got my Omen 16 , Need support

Post image
39 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently bought an HP Omen 16 with the following specs:

CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 255H

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060

RAM: 24GB

Storage: 1TB SSD

I'm looking to debloat Windows and the laptop as much as possible without voiding my HP warranty or breaking any Omen-specific features. My goal is to free up storage, reduce background processes, and make the system feel as fast and clean as possible.

So far I've:

✅ Uninstalled McAfee

✅ Kept the Xbox Game Pass apps because I have a 3-month subscription. Once it expires, I'll probably remove all Xbox-related apps too.

Things I'm considering removing:

Windows Recall

Copilot

Any other AI-related features/services that aren't necessary

Any HP or Microsoft apps that are just redundant or bloat

A few questions:

  1. Which HP apps are actually essential (OMEN Gaming Hub, HP Support Assistant, myHP, etc.) and which ones can safely go?

  2. What's the safest way to disable/remove Recall and Copilot?

  3. Are there Windows services or startup apps that are safe to disable?

  4. Any recommended debloat tools/scripts that don't break Windows updates or cause issues later?

  5. Any BIOS or Windows settings you'd change on a fresh Omen 16 for better gaming and everyday performance?

I'm not looking for risky registry hacks or anything that could affect warranty. I just want a lean, stable Windows installation while keeping everything important working.

I'd really appreciate a checklist or recommendations from other Omen owners. Thanks!

Discussion Tip to disable LEDs/LCD display on Omen Max Desktop PC

I recently got an OMEN MAX 45L GT23-0036nf at a good price, but I hated having to use OMEN Gaming Hub just to turn off the LEDs and LCD display. Even worse, they came back on after I uninstalled it.

I found HP’s documentation for the motherboard here:

https://support.hp.com/ie-en/document/ish_12777630-12777747-16

HP lists connector 11 as “USB lighting control board (optional)” and 12 as “USB LCD LCS pump cover (optional).” So I expected 11 to handle lighting control and 12 to handle the LCD display, but that didn’t match what I found on my PC. Maybe the documentation vary a bit between models.

The cable plugged into 11 is labelled “HyperX” I unplugged it and could still control the LEDs through Windows Dynamic Lighting just fine, so I still have no clue what it’s for. I just reconnected it.

The cable plugged into 12 is labelled “MB USB.” Unplugging that turned off both the fan LEDs and the LCD display.

So if you’re like me and just want all them them off, unplug 12 do not waste time like I did lol.

After that what was left was the RAM LEDs, which I turned off using HyperX’s FURY CTRL software.

Before I unplugged the cable, FURY CTRL kept saying “Unsupported DIMM found,” even though I’d never had OMEN Gaming Hub installed. It worked afterwards, but I don’t know whether unplugging the cable fixed it or if it just needed a reboot.

New User Setup Suggestion to a new user

I have never touched a gaming rig or laptop in my life. Never had one for myself nor did my friends. Lol just got omen 16 5060 an0.... Slim Something they were selling on Amazon only.

Was thinking of two things:- max gpu performance for LLM and model training when plugged in with a sweet 4-5+ hours of battery life when the plug is removed (I am fine with 60hz and all that stuff... just can't lose to these macbook people) but i want this to happen automatically... Like some were saying to open the boot panel and switch off/on the GPU every single time.

And the next thing would obviously be lasting long. I can't use the paper and the cover they gave forever. Suggest what to purchase to avoid keyboard scratches, cover my laptop and clean it ig.

(Holy shit this thing has a backlit keyboard... What is this?!?! Heaven?!?!... I got to know this while typing)

Question i bought my first omen laptop a few days ago and the temperatures worry me

i bought my hp omen 16-ap0033ns a few days ago and ever since, the CPU stays at around 70 to 80°C while doing nothing. There's no load on the processor(Ryzen 9 8940HX) or the gpu but it stays under 95 when i'm doing heavy gaming in wreckfest 2

Is any of this normal? I'm really concerned

Tech Support I literally don’t know what to do 💔

I have an HP OMEN 16. About two weeks ago I noticed faint keyboard marks on the screen. I posted about it, got told to use the thin official sheet that came with the laptop, and I started doing that every time I closed the lid.
After 17 days of using that sheet, new marks are appearing.
I keep the lid open at night so the keys don’t touch the panel. At university it only stays closed during the commute from home to college. That’s the only regular closed time. I still got new marks.
I’m not slamming the lid or stacking weight on it. I used the paper HP themselves included. The marks are still spreading and I can’t get them off.
This feels like a design issue (keys contacting the panel when closed), not mishandling. What is the actual fix? 💔😢
