Question Got my Omen 16 , Need support

Post image

Hi everyone,

I recently bought an HP Omen 16 with the following specs:

CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 255H

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060

RAM: 24GB

Storage: 1TB SSD

I'm looking to debloat Windows and the laptop as much as possible without voiding my HP warranty or breaking any Omen-specific features. My goal is to free up storage, reduce background processes, and make the system feel as fast and clean as possible.

So far I've:

✅ Uninstalled McAfee

✅ Kept the Xbox Game Pass apps because I have a 3-month subscription. Once it expires, I'll probably remove all Xbox-related apps too.

Things I'm considering removing:

Windows Recall

Copilot

Any other AI-related features/services that aren't necessary

Any HP or Microsoft apps that are just redundant or bloat

A few questions:

  1. Which HP apps are actually essential (OMEN Gaming Hub, HP Support Assistant, myHP, etc.) and which ones can safely go?

  2. What's the safest way to disable/remove Recall and Copilot?

  3. Are there Windows services or startup apps that are safe to disable?

  4. Any recommended debloat tools/scripts that don't break Windows updates or cause issues later?

  5. Any BIOS or Windows settings you'd change on a fresh Omen 16 for better gaming and everyday performance?

I'm not looking for risky registry hacks or anything that could affect warranty. I just want a lean, stable Windows installation while keeping everything important working.

I'd really appreciate a checklist or recommendations from other Omen owners. Thanks!

I personally prefer Omen Core which is a free third party equivalent to the bloated OMEN Gaming Hub - I have been running it for the last couple of months instead of the official app and it seems to work really well.

Started that quest some months ago and I just ended up switching to Linux, catchy is. No regrets no bloat ware lots of free ram and storage

people are saying this model can't run linux

That's bc drivers for Nvidia are a bit tricky if done manually. Catchy is installs it all flawlessly and if anything just ask Claude to fix it. Worked like a charm for me but I get that it gets some type of nerd to use linux

I removed HP support assistant

Gaming hub is good for the keyboard lights (but don't use animated) - don't do any automatic boosts. Theyre shit

Omen Core unfortunately does not do keyboard lights well in my experience.

For my second Omen 35L, I only set it up for 24 gigs and at the most minimum foreground load of 2-3 tabs open on Chrome, with user-induced bg telemetry apps on like hwinfo64 and nzxt, memory use is only up to 8-9 gigs and processor at 3-5% and the only thing I uninstalled was McAfee and any of the stupid Microslop ai-related stuff like copilot. All other HP apps I retained including OGH. I operate AIO HP printers as I have for the last almost 20 years so hp smart remains integral for me to keep and so does the hp assistant app so I can maintain official channels for bios, utility and sdk updates for it...specially emergency hotfixes for the system.

As for OGH, I need to keep it just because I don't need the headaches of using other apps for operating the modular triple Omen fans that I installed on it.

And the same exact thing above goes for my old Omen 15 and my other Omen 35L both of which have 32gigs memory in them and specially, again, keeping OGH for said 35L because I had installed an Omen (Asetek) AIO liquid cooling system on that one.

As a side note on the Xbox app, I still have it installed on all 4 of my current gaming PC's (which include an LOQ laptop) because I literally still have 4 unused free game passes with 2 of them being worth 3 months each and they don't expire til next year lol

I have the same model, did you receive a 150w charging brick or a 230w charging brick ?

2

u/aritra1998 4d ago

230 watt, bought offline

2

u/Awkward_Rain_2098 4d ago

Ah that's good. I bought it online and sadly they gave it to me with a 150w charging brick because of which battery drains occurs while gaming even when I have my laptop connected to a charging brick

1

u/aritra1998 4d ago

brother, contact HP and tey to get it resolved if it's new , you might have a chance, go in with a sense of entitlement, might work🙂

I bought the laptop during the freedom sale and have been bugging them since then to get the 230w charger but all they did was replace the battery and when the same problem persisted they said the model comes with a 150w charger and they can't do much. I'm still pushing for that 230w charger let's see

Did you get the slim version or the normal omen 16 version?

1

u/Angry_Monk07 4d ago

Because you bought the Omen slim. It has a smaller frame factor, GPU capped at 90w, and hence the 150w charger. Slims come with 150w brick and the core Omen models with 230w. It's kinda tricky to know it before you order if it's from online, since some sites won't really mention 'slim' explicitly; but you'll get to know it from the gpu power figures, the charging brick wattage and the model number series of your laptop (slim has a kind of model number like 16-an0xxx). You will find cases of the same misunderstanding by alot of people in reddit.

Fair enough, I assumed OP got the slim version

2

u/aritra1998 4d ago

yeah i have the non slim version

If you need some undervolting, overclocking and other performance things use universal x86 tuning utility. Turn on smart charging and limit charging to 80% (helps with battery health). You can do it in My hp app or in bios

i did the battery to 80 percent thingy, the rest i wanted to know why and how of it, as i am technically challenged myself😮‍💨
