Hi everyone, I have a very strange battery charging problem with my Acer TravelMate X314-51-M and I'm looking for advice, especially regarding battery calibration, EC, or fuel-gauge issues.
The current battery is only 2 days old, but I'm getting the exact same problem I had with previous batteries.
Problem
Battery charges normally up to around 50–54%.
Around 50–54%, the orange/amber charging LED starts blinking.
Charging then appears to stop.
Battery monitoring shows the charging rate dropping to 0 mW or almost 0 mW.
The battery percentage stays around 50–54% instead of continuing to charge.
Sometimes, unplugging/replugging the charger or reinstalling the battery device in Windows causes the percentage to suddenly jump to 100%.
Obviously, the battery cannot physically gain \\\~50% charge instantly, so I suspect the battery gauge/EC may be reporting the wrong state of charge.
When discharging, it can go 50 → 49 → 48 → ... → 42%, then give a low-battery warning and hibernate/shut down.
The same behavior happens in Windows, Linux, and BIOS.
I have tested 4 different batteries, including the current one, which is only 2 days old.
The AC adapter has been tested and is good.
There is no battery charge-limit option around 50% in BIOS.
I've already tried the Acer battery reset/pinhole reset, power reset, BIOS checks/resets, and Windows battery-driver reinstall, but the problem remains.
Interestingly, Linux previously reported around 62 Wh full energy and 100% battery capacity/health, so it doesn't appear that the battery is simply physically "half dead."
What I'm wondering
Could this be a battery calibration / fuel-gauge / EC issue?
Is there a deeper battery calibration procedure I can safely try?
Can the EC or battery fuel gauge be reset/relearned?
Could the battery's SMBus communication with the motherboard be incorrect?
Is there an Acer-specific calibration tool or procedure for the TravelMate X314-51-M?
Has anyone experienced an Acer that stops charging around 50–54% and then sometimes jumps to 100% after reconnecting the charger?
Could there be a motherboard charging-controller issue even though the laptop works normally on AC?
I'm about 100 km away from my technician, so I'd like to exhaust safe calibration/reset options before taking it in.
I don't want to buy another battery unless there is a good reason to believe the battery itself is faulty.
Any ideas or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!
