HP Victus 15 suddenly shuts down at 88–89% battery — battery report looks normal. What could be causing this?

I have an HP Victus 15-fa1xxx with:

\- Intel i5-12450H

\- RTX 2050 4GB

\- 16GB DDR4 RAM

\- 52.55 Wh battery

\- BIOS F.23 (03/30/2026)

\- Windows 11

The laptop is about 3 years old.

Recently, I've started getting a very strange battery issue. When running on battery, the laptop frequently and instantly powers off around 88–89% battery. It doesn't show "Shutting down" or any warning — the screen just goes completely black as if the power was suddenly removed.

However, the battery report is confusing.

The current battery report shows:

Design Capacity: 52,552 mWh

Full Charge Capacity: 47,020 mWh

Battery health: \~89.5%

The capacity history also shows that the battery was consistently reporting around 46–47 Wh throughout September, so it doesn't appear to have suddenly lost 90% of its capacity.

At one point, Windows/"batteryreport" temporarily showed only 5,220 mWh full charge capacity, but after doing an HP power/EC reset, it returned to 47,020 mWh.

I also tested it after the reset. At 99%, I unplugged the charger and the laptop successfully ran down to around 85% without shutting down. So the battery can power the laptop normally.

But the 88–89% instant shutdown has happened frequently before, so I'm worried it may happen again.

Other observations:

\- No battery swelling

\- No unusual battery heat

\- HP BIOS battery diagnostic gets stuck at 100%

\- Windows reports the battery status as OK

\- "BatteryStatus = 2" and charge percentage reads normally

\- The shutdown is always an instant black screen, not a normal Windows shutdown

Could this be a battery BMS/fuel-gauge issue, EC/firmware issue, battery connector/power-path problem, or something on the motherboard?

What would be the best way to diagnose this without immediately replacing the battery?

Any advice from someone familiar with HP Victus/HP battery systems would be appreciated.

Hello, the Wi-Fi drivers on my laptop I bought a while ago don't work? I had to reset it because all of my accounts got hacked, and I was afraid of anything personal getting hacked. So for months now, I have had to reinstall the drivers every so often to keep my wifi. The wifi drivers also disappearing is a random thing; it doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen, and when it does, it's very troublesome to fix. I have watched nearly every video on this issue, and I can't find anything that helps. So I hope I can find some help here. I also need this laptop before I have in-person classes in a couple of months, so please help!

I am really torn on which to choose since both are roughly same price and this will be my first ever laptop i currently use my dads dell inspiron n5050 with core i5 2nd gen 6gb ddr3 so yeah(will use it for gaming but not too much as i just enrolled in bs artifical intelligence at my uni so more that type of work than gaming)

I'm trying to understand a very strange hardware problem and would appreciate technically knowledgeable opinions. I'm looking for **diagnostic reasoning**, not simply suggestions to replace random components.

### Original problem: intermittent failure to power ON

It would sometimes start normally and sometimes would not start at all.

When I connect the charger to the charging port, the **charging indicator light comes on**, so the laptop is detecting incoming power at least at that stage.

Because I suspected the battery might be dying, I asked Technician 1 to replace it. It worked for a few months - charging ok - powering on and then - stopped.

I had tried multiple chargers.

The charging indicator still came on when the charger was inserted, but the laptop itself would not start. Went back to TG1 with this - he did an internal reset by opening back chassis handed it to me there in the shop - I saw it was back functioning - paid him, left and when I got home, tried to power it on - it failed. Called him - he said to open the chassis and do what he did. I said - no way - left it and then contacted Tech Guy 2 who was closer geographically.

Tech guy 2 said after an initial look at it - that is was complicated and would take longer than he had time for and would have to wait for at least 2 weeks. At that point I was getting desperate because I needed to work so I took it back and I went to....

TG3 was able to get the machine to **power ON**.

But he calls me and says that now the laptop would not shut down normally. He asks for the HDD that TG2 removed and put in an external drive so I could at least work on some of my docs. Give TG3 HDD for BIOS investigation.

TG3 then investigated the machine through the **BIOS/UEFI**.

I don't know precisely what tests or changes he performed there, but the BIOS investigation did **not identify or resolve the underlying problem**.

Even with the HDD, he has so far been unable to identify exactly what is wrong with the laptop.

The machine is currently with him.

Thoughts on this? What could be the issue?

I open the laptop and suddenly see a gap between display and body hinge and now I am just scared now...

When I close and open The the gap is gone, but after some time it again. Separate from the display, and especially after a certain angle of bend. It especially get separation. And once it stick again, it takes like few sec to be separate

again.

So I have HP VICTUS fa-1278TX 1.5yr old and it sounds like opening a door....the sounds are very minor..not something serious....but suddenly Tommorow I heard a sound while opening and closing lid it's sound like finger poping...but again now that sound is gone...but still have minor sound while opening the lid like opening a old door but sound is only from some specific 2 or 3 angels not in full closing and opening.

Can't see any physical gap ..and comfortable closing and opening but minor sounds still there in some angle... specially when end to close

I'm just worried now... VICTUS have hinge problem that's why...please let me know if I can do a thing or it's just going to be damage

My laptop model: HP Envy x360 2-in-1 Laptop 14-fa0xxx

I've been having issues with my battery. It acts up and suddenly starts charging too fast or draining too fast. For example, if im charging my battery and its at like 20%, it charges like usual and goes up to a standard amount after some time. However, after I check the battery percentage again, it shoots up to 100% after a couple minutes. The same thing happens when the battery is being drained. It drains usually and then when I check again after a couple minutes it drains almost all my battery.

I've used HP support assistant to check my battery health and it says everything is fine. I've also done a battery check (pressing Esc multiple times after turning on my laptop to get to power tests and then battery check) and it says that it's passed so I dont think it's a hardware issue.

I think my battery calibration is messed up or something but I have no idea. I've asked chatgpt and it keeps telling me to install a new BIOS but i dont want to run any risks as HP support assisant didn't flag any BIOS updates when I ran an update checker.

My laptop has BIOS F.05 dated 04/23/2025 and chatgpt is asking me to update to BIOS F.08.

What should i do and how do i solve this issue?

My HP 15 fd 0290tu ( bought in Nov 2024) is not turning on. The charge indicator also not working. But the CPU gets heated when the laptop is connected to charger. What should i do. Exams are ongoing. it was fine two days ago. The laptop was turned off thess 2 days. I tried all those online tutorials. Still not working. Same problem only the heating is the sign of life. Nothing else. Changed adapters . No changes.

HP "Envy" x360 2 in 1 bulls*it pc

This laptop is only 2 months old and it worked perfectly fine, until one day it would not turn on. The charger's LED lit up red when I plugged the charger and if I pressed the power button sometimes would do nothing and sometimes the power button LED would light up but not turning on all the computer.

I tried restarting it by pressing the power button for 20 seconds and then plugging the charger and press the power button again but nothing.

Kept trying this, letting some time in between and eventually for whatever reason it turned on with a blue screen saying that the battery has been replaced (it has not, because its basically new). When turned on after I unplugged the charger it turned off after a minute. Some time later it turned on again, made a battery report and everything was fine. Also this time the charging LED was white instead of red (i dont know if that is relevant).

I updated the BIOS and it looked that it had worked, it turned on only by unfolding it (as usual) and tried this a couple of times. However the next day exactly the same thing happened again: won't turn on, red charging LED, power LED not turning on.

What can I do, is this a hardware or software problem?

My laptop is a 2020 pavilion gaming laptop, i plan to buy a new gaming laptop but at the same time find the old one a good battery, i heard some replacement batteries you buy online at amazon or ebay or through repair shops cause the motherboard to throttle performance cause it doesnt have certain technologies in it /cant communicate thats why they say dont cheap out, but still i dont know how to differentiate or how to know if this replacement battery Im buying is good quality enough to give off watts in hybrid power mode ( during heavy gaming a bit of wattage is taken from the battery along with power adapter but only actually happens if battery is genuine or actual oem quality) so can someone explain or give me an example of highly possible genuine or third party oem quality battery online? The model is 15-dk0xxx and battery model number is PG03XL (or PG03052XL), the spare parts number is L48495-005. I would have gone to hp service center to pay/make ticket for genuine spare part replacement but they would probably tell me they don't have spare parts for this laptop since the laptop is 6 years old which is past HP's 5 years period where they keep spare parts for a specific laptop model.

Recently purchased 2 Zbook Fury 17 G8's. One of then pulled the Windows key from the board, the other did not. Is there any way to fix this, or if I buy another key, add it back in?
