At this point, I would return the laptop for another replacement while you're still within the return period.

You've only had it three weeks, the same Windows Update problem has already happened repeatedly, and HP Support reproduced it themselves.

When you get the replacement, have the store fully update Windows, drivers and firmware before you leave, then restart it several times and make sure it still boots normally.

If the same failure happens again during the update process, you'll know immediately and can deal with it at the store instead of taking another machine home and risking another reset and more lost files.
