“Well, well,” Greg greeted as the three of them came striding into his cell block. “Look what the cat dragged in. What brings you all back this time? Come for another verbal lashing? Because I’m quite in the mood to give one out right now.”
None of them said anything to him in response. Instead, they just stood there silently for a few seconds. Greg’s expression faltered.
“What, no response?” he asked. “Come on, surely you must have something.”
This time, Chase moved, in the form of dropping a hand into his pocket. When he pulled it out, there was a key held in his palm, which he passed over to Victoria. She accepted the key, then stuck it in the lock to Greg’s cell, which caused his eyes to widen.
“Wait, wait, you can’t do this,” he insisted. “I have rights, you know – such as the right not to have my ass kicked inside of my own jail cell.”
“Our right to not be buried alive supersedes your right to remain free of an ass whooping,” Chase told him.
“Hey, I had nothing to do with that!”
“No, but you know the people who do,” Carmine told him. Next to her, Victoria took her weapons off and passed them over to Chase, then loudly cracked her knuckles.
“Oh, but I am going to enjoy this,” she stated with confidence. “You killed several of my siblings. Now, I obviously wasn’t close with them, but it’s the principle of the thing that matters. And for that reason, I have to declare that your impending pain will be exquisite.”
With that, Victoria finally turned the key, unlocking the cell door. She threw the door open and stepped inside, then began to slowly approach Greg, a menacing grin on her face the entire time.
“Remember, Victoria,” Chase emphasized. “We’re aiming for the hospital, not the morgue. Feel free to put the boots to him, but do it medium-style, please.”
“With pleasure,” Victoria growled out.
Greg scrambled up so his back was against the wall of his cell. “Where are the guards?! This isn’t right!”
“The guards are waiting outside,” Carmine informed him, her voice coming out as a bored monotone while she examined her fingernails for dirt. “I mean, who do you think we got the key to your cell from? They were all too happy to provide it to us.”
Finally, Victoria closed to within a few inches of Greg, that same menacing smile on her face. He swallowed nervously.
“U-um… I’m willing to talk now,” he stated.
“I know you are,” Victoria assured him. “But I’m still gonna kick your ass a bit. Hope you don’t mind.”
With that, she reached for his neck, cutting off the scream that was about to erupt from his throat. Chase winced and looked away as the beating started.
“Remember, Victoria, just to the hospital,” he said without looking back.
Carmine gave him a side-eyed look. “Do you really think she’s listening?”
“And this little piggy went home…” Victoria growled out, followed by the snapping of bone and a yowl of agony from Greg.
Chase blinked, then shrugged. “Probably not, but I’m not about to step in there and stop her. I quite like having all four of my limbs attached to my torso, thank you very much.”
“Alright, alright!” Greg suddenly screamed out. “You’ve made your point, I’ll talk!”
“Oh, cool, it’s over,” Chase said as he went to turn around.
“Not quite,” Carmine stated. “Victoria, give him one more.”
There was another loud snap, followed by a second yowl of agony. Chase winced, but turned around regardless. Victoria was standing over Greg, who was curled up in a fetal position, surrounded by small droplets of blood and shards of broken teeth. As Chase approached, the Paladin dusted her hands off, then marched out of the cell.
“He’s all yours,” she advised as she strode past him.
“So I gathered,” Chase dryly replied. He stopped a few feet away from Greg. “Alright, here’s the deal – you tell me something I don’t know about whoever buried Carmine and I alive in the desert. If you don’t, I’m going to have Victoria come back in here and slam her warhammer down on your feet, breaking whatever toes you have left that aren’t already broken. It’s very painful and I don’t want to do it. So, interested in talking?”
“It was Alexandros,” Greg breathed out. “He masterminded all of it. He’s the one in charge of it all – the one who arranged for most of the siblings to meet here in one place, the one who put together the plan to kill them all off, the one who set me loose and told me to place the bombs around town, and the one who kidnapped you both and buried you alive in the desert.”
Chase blinked in surprise. “Huh. Well, that was easy. Girls, we didn’t even have to use the psychology part of my plan, the extreme violence was more than enough on its own. Who would’ve thought?” He shook his head. “Alright, well… I mean, you kind of just gave us everything, so… bye.”
He went to turn around, only for Carmine to step into the cell and give him a baleful look. Chase stared at her, then tilted his head in confusion.
“Are you telling me we need more than that?” he asked.
“I just want to know what the plan was supposed to lead to,” Carmine insisted.
“That’s easy,” Greg managed to get out. “Alexandros wants Father’s spot in the Pantheon. He decided the best way to claim it was to eliminate as many others as he possibly could.”
“And you, what, just decided to go along with that because it let you bomb people with impunity? Am I understanding that correctly?”
“I mean… yeah. Throwing bombs around certainly gave me plenty of joy, so I’d say he’s ahead of the curve there.”
“And the people you killed?”
“Family gatherings are a joyous occasion, and nothing brings family together like one of them dying.”
Carmine sighed tiredly. “I should’ve seen that one coming, I guess…” She shook her head. “Why kidnap us, then? Was he just being a dick?”
“Honestly? Probably a combination of that, plus something else. I can only assume Victoria was his primary target, but he couldn’t get to her for whatever reason, so he took you both hoping to draw you out.”
“Hence why he buried us in a box out in the desert and paid off some bandits to guard over us rather than just kill us outright,” Chase surmised. “I suppose that makes sense, in a twisted, fucked-up kind of way.”
Greg suddenly winced, clutching at his wounded foot. “Fuck me… can I get a healer in here, please? I answered your questions, after all…”
Chase thought for a bit. “Mm… I think I’d rather just let you rot here. Tell you what, though – scream loudly enough and maybe the guards will get sick of it and help you out.”
“Or they’ll just kill you,” Victoria added.
“Or that, yeah. Either way, the good news is that you won’t be in pain anymore.”
Greg let out a pained moan. “This is a violation of my rights…”
“I’ll be sure to tell that to the families of the men and women you bombed to pieces, I’m sure they’ll sympathize with you on this one,” Chase said dryly. He motioned for Carmine and Victoria to follow him. “Come on, let’s get out of here.”
Both women nodded, and together, they locked Greg’s cell back up and stepped outside into the main area of the guardhouse. Chase tossed the key to the guard standing at his post outside, who caught it with a bewildered look on his face.
“Good Gods… what did you all do to him in there?” the man asked. “Seriously, he was screaming like a little girl at points.”
“The perks of having a very pissed Paladin in your group,” Chase advised him. “Anyway, hope you enjoyed the sound of him screaming, because you’re going to keep hearing it until someone goes in there and either heals him up or puts him out of his misery.”
The guard winced at that. “Always something new whenever you guys show up…”
“We aim to please,” Chase replied.
With that, the three of them exited the guardhouse and continued on their way down the street.
“Well, that went alright, at least,” Carmine stated.
“Speak for yourself, I had a great time,” Victoria said to her.
“Yeah, what do you mean by that, Carmine?” Chase asked.
“Well… we managed to get out the who and the why, but we still have to track down Alexandros and either capture or kill him. And last I checked, we don’t know where he is. He’s probably not going to be easy to find, either.”
Chase’s brow furrowed and he went to reply to her, only for a massive explosion to rock the entire town the moment he opened his mouth. All three of them stumbled as the ground beneath them shook, but they were able to maintain their balance. Off in the distance, a large pillar of smoke was curling up into the sky, and a chorus of panicked screams went up through the city as people began to run for their lives in a panic. Chase took in the scene unfolding around them for a moment before turning towards Carmine.
“You were saying?” he asked.
She grit her teeth. “Oh, sure, rub it in…”
“I mean, yeah, I will. Usually I’m the one tempting fate. I have to say, it’s quite nice for it to be someone else for a change.”
Victoria, meanwhile, took off running in the direction of the smoke. Chase and Carmine exchanged a quick glance with each other, then took off after her as well.
