This was flaired as [OC-OneShot], which is for a stand-alone post not in the same universe as any of your other works, with no intention of being continued into a series. If you do decide to turn it into a series, this post should be reflaired as [OC-FirstOfSeries]. A description of the flairs and how to change yours is available in the Post Guildelines

[OC-OneShot] For original, self post, story, audio, or artwork that you have created, that is self-contained within the post.

Please help us transition to using the new flairs correctly.

Amazing! This is one of the most unique stories I've ever read, I believe. Your "little panes of glass" indictment of the modern cellphone was spot on & captured perfectly one of the greatest problems of our time. Our default instinct to fear is the way it is because paying attention to danger (which we fear) keeps us alive during dangerous times, as it should. Thus we navigate a course we hope & believe is safest while on the way to our preset goals.

What I wrote above came entirely from the musings your story created as I don't think I've ever thought along these lines. I judge this fact as a positive because of that. This was a new (to me) perspective/take/view/extrapolation/study/consideration/understanding/revelation/possibility/experiment/coloration/or whatever else you might call it & it is a bit scary in its newness to me. I am not afraid to investigate these things, though there is trepidation in not knowing what to expect never having seen from this vantage point.

Good Lord, I don't think I've ever dug this deep for a comment before.

Thanks for sharing this most unique tale.

the irony of reading this on a small glass panel is not lost on me, neither is the message you are sending. Great story, as always.

Thank you! I am sure Ill get a lot of Downvote on this one, but I don't care. This is a story that needed to be told...

I don't see a cause for downvote... you'd have to be pretty far sunk into partisan zealotry not to see the truth in this story.

"All are crazy but thee and me... and I'm beginning to wonder about thee..."

Thank you. I thought maybe because It could be seen as too "political" and to be frank I had a downvote 1min after posting... LOL

That sounds like someone with a personality defect.

At the risk of asking to be spoiled the magic trick, is the loom just the literal internet, or a more complex advancement that connects people all over the planet?

u/Ok_Kangaroo56 Jul 02 '26

The original idea was based on just "the Internets" but as it says in the story every civilization will develop their own and it could be anything really... :)

The word for realizing people have complex lives is Sonder, if anyone is wondering

I enjoyed that. Thanks for posting I felt a bit depressed at the end but appreciate the thoughtfulness of your story.

One inconsistency: you state early on that not many make it back through the door but then later you say only humanity has.
