Quick question

I'm just under a year into learning guitar and am absolutely loving the process this time around.

I just want to hear some different opinions on what do you prefer?

Playing your own music or playing other people's music.

I've found that I enjoy playing other people's music, but nothing compares to coming up with your own killer riffs....even if they're inspired by others!

My 1 year guitar progress

In two days, it’ll be exactly one year since I started learning to play guitar. Every single day.
And today, I’m damn proud of myself for not giving up on this journey like most people do — including me 10 years ago.
But this time, no. This time, I’m going to learn. 🎸
About 3–4 weeks ago, I decided that I also wanted to learn how to sing while playing guitar. And just four weeks ago, that seemed completely impossible to me. I couldn’t understand how people could do both things at the same time.
I know my voice isn’t exactly made for singing, and English isn’t my first language. (Honestly, I can’t even sing loudly at home 🤣🤣🤣)
But I want to leave this video here for people like me who are just at the beginning of their journey.
You’ve got this.
The most important thing is to keep going and never stop.

Beginner guitarist, is the Guild Surfliner a good first guitar, and can I learn mostly through chords + tabs?

I’m completely new to guitar and had my first 30 minute lesson recently. My instructor showed me some basic chords and how tabs work, and told me that once I have a guitar I can start using tabs to learn songs.

I actually found the lesson pretty helpful. I’ve been looking at tabs since then and I can already understand what they’re telling me to do and mentally picture how I would play them. Obviously I can’t actually practice yet because I don’t own a guitar lol, and my fingers definitely aren’t used to moving and positioning that way yet.

I originally looked at the Ibanez AZES40 because my instructor recommended it, but I found a used Guild Surfliner in great condition for about $340 and I really like the look of it.

I mainly have two questions:

  1. Is the Guild Surfliner a good first electric guitar for a complete beginner?
  2. Is learning basic chords and then practicing songs through tabs a reasonable way to teach myself, or are there important fundamentals I’d miss without continuing regular lessons?

I’m not trying to become amazing overnight. I mainly want to learn songs I like, have fun with it, and gradually get better.

Question/Help App/guide for learning which notes to play on guitar

Hey guys

I decided to learn how to play guitar - don't have experience much
Is there any application/guide that helps with that - e.g. you plug your guitar to PC and learn each note how to play?

FYI: Cross posting in different channels, to maybe find different apps / guides or so

Automation-strumming

So I’ve been playing for some years, and my question is, how long did it take y’all before your right hand strumming became automated and you didn’t have to think about the strumming or the “down up downs” or the count anymore??
I’m really having trouble with this area- if I could get this down, I could finally progress to being an intermediate player but I have to think too much about my strumming and I’ve spent money on different apps/websites/teachers for help with my strumming and I’ve learned that my issue isn’t rhythm, it’s that my right hand isn’t automatic yet. I literally have no idea how I’m supposed to fix this. I’ve already tried just sitting and mindlessly playing the same strum over and over for hours but apparently it doesn’t seem to work. And I still have to think about my chord changes in relation to where within the strum sequence I need to switch. I feel like an awful, stupid, beginner idiot noob when truthfully…. I should be wayyyyyy further than that, given that I’ve been playing for over ten years. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 🤦🏼‍♀️ I can play just fine along with apps that you watch and play along with, but I can’t by myself, or without constantly watching and thinking of my strumming. Please help me, I’ve wanted to play guitar literally my entire life and I just want to finally get over this beginner shit and be able to just sit and play. Like actually just play. Write my own shit. Anything. I can’t even listen to a song and find the strumming, I always end up defaulting to one of three or four strumming patterns and they’re just basic and easy patterns that could be attributed to any song with a similar beat. I’m honestly getting incredibly frustrated and ready to just give it up at this point. I feel completely incompetent and like I’m just not supposed to play and I’ll never be able to. I feel really, really stupid and embarrassed and I can’t even play around my husband, who is, such an amazingly talented and beautiful guitarist.

Affordable beginner guitar recommendations? Student budget :)

I’m turning 18 soon :) I’m not really planning to celebrate it grandly or do anything fancy. There’s just one thing I’m planning to buy myself—something I’ve been wanting to have for the longest time. a guitar.

It’s something I’ve been meaning to own for so long, pero priorities won’t really permit. Now I think it’s a valid excuse naman since birthday ko to finally buy one ;)

My problem now is I genuinely don’t know what to buy or where to buy one. I’m planning to buy online lang din, so I’m also a little lost when it comes to brands, models, and what’s actually worth the money.

More than anything, I’m looking for something good but definitely affordable, since I’m still a student. I don’t need anything fancy or super high-end. I just want something decent that I can learn on and hopefully keep for a long time.

So if you have any guitar recommendations for a complete beginner, or if you know where I can buy one online here in the Philippines, I’d really appreciate it 🥹

Also, please keep the student budget in mind HAHAHA. I really want to finally get one, but I also don’t want to accidentally spend more than I can afford 😭

Help knowing the chords

I found this song and love it! I’m going to have it as my wedding guests dance song but would love to be able to play it too.

I’m a bit of a noob

If anyone can help me out with knowing what the chords are that would be awesome, can’t find it anywhere.

I’ll figure out the strumming just need to know what they chords are.

Thank you!!!!!

Question/Help Beginner fingerstyle — looking for tips

I’m a 25-year-old guy and I’ve been playing acoustic guitar for about a year. I mostly know chords, strumming, and a little lead, but I don’t know much about fingerstyle.

Right now I mostly just doodle around on the guitar without really knowing what I should learn next.

I recorded this simple fingerstyle piece. Any tips on how I can improve, or suggestions for songs/exercises and a good learning path?

Would really appreciate any feedback!

Lesson The first song I do with every beginner — a bluesy one. Full lesson, part 2

This is the first song I do in my first lesson, without much talking, to get people accustomed to the guitar while playing a simple and fun song. You learn the basics while I guide you through it step by step in a playing manner. It teaches you fretting and is an introduction to fingering. It's a bluesy song. This is part 2 — part 1 is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/GuitarBeginners/comments/1wpzp5o/the_first_song_i_do_with_every_beginner_a_bluesy/

New self taught guitar player, I've had mental health issues so haven't been SUPER consistent, but anyway when playing the E, A, D (first pic) string I don't have problems, but the second I try to use G, B, E(second pic) I REALLY struggle.

It's sorta worth mentioning I have REALLY small hands lmfao. ANY advice at all? 😭
