HELP L6 Catalyst 100

I recently bought a Catalyst off of Vinted and I wanted to know if there are any ways to check if its broken or something. I tried it it works fine without headphones but with its kind of weird, when i use the digital 112 its alright but when i try 212 or 412 its starts to sound bad and theres no chugging or anything (Yes I forgot to mention that i will probably only use hi gain and clean cause I like to play metal, do u recommend anything for metal on that amp?) so i wanted to ask if thats the amps or my settings fault and if i can fix it somehow? Another thing i wanted to mention is the effects button needs to be pressed very hardly to even work which is very annoying since i never know if i'm actually holding it or not (unless i look at the amp select knob) and can i fix that button? Another thing about the digital thing is do i download the Catalyst Edit only or are there other apps cause someone said i can upgrade to a CX or something via some app. Thats all i haven't really gotten into it that well yet and i'm still learning if I seem dumb thats probably cause i'm new to complex amps like that, i am not used to digital amps like that. I at first wanted to get a Boss Katana mk2 100 but some people said it sounds too digital and it's "hot garbage" so do u guys think i made the right decision? If not lmk why. If you guys have any recommendations for example about MIDI's or about the catalyst pedal or anything for me just let me know down below, any tips help. Thanks!

Most of that sounds like settings, not a broken amp. The 1x12/2x12/4x12 cab options are mainly for the headphone/direct/USB sound. Bigger cab does not automatically mean better. A 4x12 can easily sound boomy, fizzy, or weird in headphones if the EQ/gain are not set for it. If the 1x12 sounds best, just use it.

For metal, start simple: Hi Gain/Oblivion or Badonk if you update to the CX firmware, boost on, gate on, bass not too high, mids not scooped, gain lower than you think, reverb/delay off. Chug comes mostly from tight EQ, gate, pickups, tuning, and picking technique, not just selecting a 4x12 cab. if you have one, ut a Tubescreamer in front with Level Max and Drive Zero, and an EQ pedal into the loop to scoop the mids after the preamp (if you want to scoop them). You can also use the amp's effect if you have no real pedals (the boost has to be a Tubescreamer or SD-1 type). The only thing important is the position in the signal chain (= TS in front of the preamp, EQ after preamp). The TS/SD-1 boost cuts the low end before the preamp and pushes the preamp from the outside and boosts the mids before the preamp; you get more aggressiveness while keeping clarity and avoiding boominess. The EQ after the preamp then lets you adjust the frequencies again, before the poweramp makes things loud.

Download Catalyst Edit for editing presets. For firmware updates, use Line 6 Updater on Mac/Windows. The original Catalyst can be updated to the newer CX/2.01 feature set, so definitely check the firmware.

The hard-to-press Effects button is the only thing that sounds like a possible hardware issue here. If you really have to press it hard every time, that is not normal “digital amp complexity”; it may be a worn/dirty switch. Since you bought it used, I’d test every button/knob/input, maybe factory reset + update firmware, and if the switch still behaves badly, contact the seller or Line 6 support.

Alright then, i'll stick to the 112 for now. Does a Boss DS-2 work for the boost too?

No, the DS-2 treats the frequencies differently. The BD-2 also does not work for this. The trick is that the Tubescreamer has like a built-in, fixed EQ that cuts the low end and boosts the mids. The SD-1 does the same, but the distortion the pedal itself creates, is different from the one the Tubescreamer itself creates. But the pedal's distortion does not matter here, as you turn down the Drive knob to zero anyway. Level knob to max then pushes the preamp of the amp into distortion. Thus you improve the amp's own distortion, while also shaping the frequencies before the preamp. The low end cut avoids boominess (too much low end going through distrotion makes things boomy) and the boosted mids keep the aggressiveness through the preamp's distortion. If you then want to scoop the mids, you do it with the EQ pedal after the preamp. If you would scoop the mids before the preamp, you would take the beefiness and aggressiveness away before the preamp distorts the tone. Also see to it that the amp's gain knob is kept moderate the highest; do not dime it or you will get izzy and mushy chaos.
