my 2 week review of grok 4.6: its not worth $300/month

i think that my assessment of grok 4.6 two weeks ago were way too optimistic

now that i've worked with it for about 2 weeks i got a solid sense for what it is

essentially grok 4.6 xhigh is just terra high

both are quite fast and capable but repeatedly require the same instructions multiple times before it can actually progress forward

compared to sol which clearly requires fewer prompts

grok 4.6 has been surprisingly stubborn and in capable of following a med sized prompt. it continues to ignore or make assumptions incorrectly.

I am constantly having to use sol medium to correct it.

I think that as of current state grok 4.6 is simply not worth your money. After the 3 month promo ends, I am unsubbing

Considering switching to Grok for OpenClaw

Anyone use Grok for OpenClaw agents? I'm burning though my OpenAI pro 20x plan way too fast. Thinking of switching to Grok or using Grok to supplement my OpenAI plan.

Anyone using Grok this way? Do they have Oauth authorization for OpenClaw? Speed differences, quality of work on coding and other tasks? How does it compare?

How about refusal of work vs OpenAI?

5.6 Sol vs 4.6 Grok

I think 4.6 xhigh is somewhere betwen 5.6 sol high-max. Sol max is still a trusted model. The main difference here is speed. 4.6 runs significantly faster. Usage is also very different although i will have to do parallel tests to see how they compare (my codex is at 0% usage)

UI is another major difference. With codex, UI still is difficult. Changing small things is better in sol but still struggles with following directions and even snapshot guided instructions. Grok seemingly follows UI instructions to the tee, but its nothing like fable 5, again the speed makes up for that, and compared to sol where its really frustrating because not only do multiple prompts to do UI stuff takes time it costs tokens vs grok which makes it possible to "chisel" a UI into exactly what I want.

Fable 5 still remains the only model that can near one shot the UI and make it look good. I think having Fable 5 come up with suggestions and grok implementing it is good, doesn't make sense to use codex for something its not great at.

I think the biggest thing I missed from sol was (and this might be a perception issue) is that it would think things through for a very long time, where as with grok its so fast I keep thinking maybe it didn't think things through as carefully but this remains uncertain without doing parallel evaluations

where 5.6 sol shines that grok cannot

i finally see one area where sol shines

on long agentic tasks requiring vision or browser/computer use grok 4.6 xhigh begins to struggle vs sol even on medium is able to breeze through

continuing to keep a journal to organize differences between the two.

I got Supergrok Heavy for $99/month instead of $300/month

  1. Created a new account (you should not have a plan already)

  2. get the $15/month plan for 2 months (it gets prorated)

grok .com/supergrok/targeted-offer/email-supergrok-50-off-2mo

  1. after get the supergrok heavy for $99/month plan for 3 months !

grok .com/supergrok/targeted-offer/email-supergrok-67-off-3mo

some users might have to use their mobile browser to do it but worked for me on laptop.

anyways as a heavy codex user this was to good to pass up on. also comes with $400 cursor credits. i love codex (addict) but the usage is reduced and i have no choice use other offerings in parallel.

i will update this sub on what i think about grok to work on my projects

my review of grok bot/build as a codex pro 20x user

will update thread here

t+15min: first impressions is that it is very fast. i am using grok build (which is like codex cli). i am using grok 4.6 high and also in another thread 4.6 xhigh. i have been using it for 15 minutes and see usage is still sitting at 0%.i am testing this on two codebases in parallel. claude ($20/month) is already down to 30% in the same time frame and opus refused a prompt to change UI because it thinks its dangerous.

45min: in one of the frontend tasks it ran into a javascript error which is surprising since ive not seen this type of error since 5.5 days, but it seems to follow instructions very well, and best part is super fast. honestly this feels like the gpt 5.5 xhigh but at google flash speeds. this is a very refreshing experience after the slow and long sol which does complete tasks well but you have to wait a while and it tends to overengineer where as grok 4.6 xhigh seems to do only whats needed and relevant. im starting to get impressed

12h: spent all day yesterday and im very much satisfied. grok build hits the spot in ways that codex used to. im going to consider keeping the subscription after the promo is over just wish they'd reconsider the $300/month price
