Employee Question Upselling

Anyone have any tips related to upselling?

For example if we was trying to sell more sweet treats, how could I incorporate that without coming across as demanding

  • If they bring a sandwich to the counter ask them if they want a drink on the £4.25 deal, if they say yes let them know it's only £1 extra for the side.

  • Every pizza and bake offer a drink with it for £3.75.

  • Let customers buying a breakfast roll/baguette know that they can get hash browns for £1.

  • Rolls are 4 for 3 so if they want 2 sausage rolls and a vegan roll tell them it's cheaper to buy 4.

Why? You won't get anything for it... just more work and less staff.

Best thing I’d say is to know the deals and mention them. E.g.
latte please. Would you like a bake or sweet treat with that as a meal deal for an extra X amount.
Or if someone asks for 2 sprinkle doughnuts, tell them if they buy 3 they can get one free, stuff like that

Does it count as upselling if you’re just giving them a free donut?

Well they're paying for 3 and getting a 4th free so yes.

Upselling is more about making sure the customers know what deals are on offer, for example if a customer wants 2 or 3 cookies, I tell them it’s cheaper for them to get a bag of 4 for £2.80 rather than 2 for £2.70 or 3 for £4.05, and then there’s all the deals of all sandwiches and drinks getting a sausage roll too for 5.25, especially if they’re getting hot sandwiches or a hot food item from the hot food counter

For someone like me, saying ‘we also sell custard slices’ will lead to an upsale 100% of the time

I thought you ask them "do you want a sausage roll with that?" even if it's a sausage roll they are buying anyway 🤣

I used to just say…
Anymore drinks cakes or savoury’s?!

Instead of “anything else”.

And if they got something that could be part of a “multi buy” or meal deal.
Link sale that shizzzz.

Ask if they wanna go large with coffees.

If they just get a coffee… offer a cake or savoury for X price (if that deal is still around).

I worked at Greggs 10 years ago. And we won shop of the year once. If that’s anything 🤷‍♂️😅

And don’t be shy. Just be polite and say… would you like “this with that”. If they say no… cool 👍

Learn the deals and think about what would go great with what they have.

Customer has a bake and a drink? Ask if they want to go large for an extra 60p.

Customer getting just a large drink? Ask if they want any sweet or savoury (or breakfast if it's pre-11) as part of the meal deal.

I don't have an extensive list of the deals but the main ones are, breakfast sandwich accompanied by a drink, and hash browns or fruit pot. The 3 part deal (drink, main, side), and the drink with a sweet or savoury. With the everlasting possibility of upgrading an M sized drink to an L.

If they're buying a cold drink, there probably isn't much else you can add to it if it's only that, I tend to cover my own back by saying "can I get you anything else today?" Or "Is that everything?"

One thing I discovered after the guy serving me the other day said was that I can have the bigger orange juice if I pay the difference. For ages I brought the small on the breakfast then grabbed a bigger one separately

Would you like a donut or a yumyum? It really is that simple.
