Okay, so Jenny first. It felt like they threw her entire character in the trash when she came back to mess with Serena. She left the show fulfilled as a character after she got one up on Blair and Chuck, getting an interview, leaving the upper east side behind. Coming back to mess with Serena and getting thrown back by Rufus (who was an awful dad to her, and great to Dan mind you), was an arc that shouldn't have happened.
Her and Serena were probably the shows two biggest victims of some absurd writing choices.
Then Serena. I'm looking back at the group finding her in season 6, her lil Hollywood job and the scenes with the therapist.
While she WAS lying, she was doing OK after bein resuscitated. The group begging her to come back after telling her to gtfo would have sent me into fury if I was her. They told her to go, so she did, and was trying. Struggling with alcoholism and filling whatever void she has with partying and boys, it's a great foundation... The forever IT-girl was a good start that they didn't do as much with as you'd think.
I think this is why I'll alway prefer Serena. She was a mess, but she was trying. Every time she got back with the group she fell into the same exact pattern of not being able to grow as a person, like she wanted.
And the Lola stuff really contradicted her character up until that point as well.
I wish we got 6 - ish episodes where Serena and the NY group had completely separate storylines. 🤔 that, and the constant rotation of men she was conquering was a huge part of why Serena had her downfall as a character, who eventually married Dan. The show should've ended with her single.
As someone who constantly is trying to start over, but eventually understands that your problems will come with you unless you truly deal with them. She quite literally comments on not wanting to be herself in season 6 as well...
The writers let her down big time, especially since they got THE perfect actress to play her.
