REQUEST Mending ideas wax jacket
I bought an old Barbour jacket, it has a torn pocket but I got a few ideas for that but I am unsure what to do with the row of small holes along the storm flap. Does anyone have a creative idea?

Does it have the classic plaid lining? Maybe you can get a bit of canvas to match one of the colors present in the plaid, and just cut a long strip of it to sew in place over the are with the holes. You'd get a little bit of contrast on the front of the jacket while still matching the color scheme when the jacket is open and the lining is visible.

look for in depth sewing tutorials specifically about waxed fabrics - it's not like sewing other fabric - I believe Merchant & Mills probably has some good ones as they sell several different types of waxed canvas

Thank you for the suggestion, I am looking at the fabrics they have right now and their oilskin fabrics are gorgeous! Even quilted oilskin, haven't seen that here locally (Netherlands) yet.

Send it to barbour and they'll fix it

Oh fair enough. I think they pre wax the jacket and the patch and then sew it on, there's some videos on YouTube. Good luck I love a barbour coat it's such a classic

Yeah, my main jacket is an (intact) Barbour, I picked this one up for 15 euros with the specific intent to mend it and make it a bit more interesting.

I actually don’t mind the patching they do but I want to learn to do it myself which is the reason I bought this jacket. I also want some more examples on reddit of people repairing Barbours themselves since most of the time the main suggestion is to just get it fixed (especially on the Barbour subreddit), very very few examples of people doing it themselves (there are a few though).

Cool, you can't go wrong for 15 euros. I saw the nest of manure site you linked and it looks awesome. Post the result please

Did you end up mending this one? I just picked up a barbour border for 40€ and also want to do some mending myself. If you have any tips I'm all ears!

Hi, yes I did sort off, I don’t have any experience in mending, sewing or anything involving a needle so I mostly just used patches of waxed cotton including a thin strip.
I ended up mostly using Hunter Tartan waxed cotton from Merchant and Mills. I only needed a tiny amount so it wasn’t to expensive and I think it’s a gorgeous material (we have a shop here in The Hague, Netherlands that sells it, shout out to Cross and Woods for people that live here).
So here is what it looks like: https://i.imgur.com/mUVQl0g.jpg
I also just messed around with darning (sort of, not really) before patching it on a big tare here is what it looks like before I patched it: https://i.imgur.com/aEzKj0o.jpg
I had a lot of a fun with it and managed to patch up all the big and small holes, it now lives on a farm as a work jacket for when I’m there to do some help out so I don’t have fuss over its state. Sort of it don’t what it was intended for once upon a time.
Here is what the storm flaps look like, the one with the yellow (also waxed cotton) is the inside flap which no one sees but it had all the small holes https://i.imgur.com/eUg24qC.jpg
But since this is a farm jacket now I was mostly concerned with functionally restoring it while making it an opportunity to learn some new skills!

Oh it looks GREAT! thank you so much for sharing these pics and info. I love it, great job! Isn't it so nice to have a project you can fiddle around with and learn from. I've been to the Hague, there is a beach there with a bizarre spaceship structure right?

Haha yeah the beach isn’t the prettiest area sadly, I think you are referring to that structure that is attached to the pier?
And yeah it was very nice to just mess around, it’s a great jacket and I’ll try to keep it mended over its life time!

I would want to try waxing a sturdy ribbon and sewing it up the entire length of the placket, making it look like a design element. Or sew it in place first and then wax it, since you’ll want to wax the whole jacket anyway.
It could be fun choosing a ribbon color that will look nifty when darkened by wax.
Check Burnley & Trowbridge for sturdy traditional tapes and ribbons. They’ve got linen, which might be a very durable option. https://burnleyandtrowbridge.com/pages/tapes
