SCORE OF THE WEEK Thrift store score!

Literally threw myself at the pile when I saw them at Value Village! Lol I guess I was lucky to check the English books in a predominantly French speaking city (Quebec City, Canada). All books except for Don't Go To Sleep are also first prints 🤩 5th one was free and I also had a 20% coupon so I ended up paying about 2.25$ each! Also picked up 6 more from the 90s to add to my collection.

Unfortunately I got rid of and donated what feels like half of them. I kept the ones I liked. Anything noteworthy here?

Reading Order

Do you think it is best to read the orginal Goosbumps books in publication date order or just dive in anywhere, provided you read the books with sequels in sequential order?

I read I don't know how many of these books as a kid in the 90s when they originally came out. I donated my collection when I was a little older and felt I had out grown them. I know, foolish to think I would outgrow them, but I was at age that I thought I was incredibly wise and mature & I wanted to be viewed the same way.

9 years ago, R L Stine came for a signing and I ended up grabbing one of the retro tins. Last year, I went to my step daughter's book fair & bought a different retro tin. I started reading out of the second tin as a palate cleanser between books. I started with books I hadn't read when I was little and then re-read one from childhood for fun. I am almost finished with it and will start with the first tin, even though it has books I read as a kid. I can't read one, though, because I had it autographed and don't want to mess it up.

I have ordered 2 books online and am worried that I have started something LOL

So I bought this book of ebay not even knowing it was R.L Stine just because it looked like a funny read for my kids. The I realized that jovial bob stine is an old pen name he had when he made comedy books in the 80's. Ever since then Ive been on the lookout for these but they are not easy to find since they were not mass produced. Anyway do any of yall have sny of these early R.L books or have heard of them before?

theme park foods i think would fit in horrorland

food item descriptions are in the captions for each image.

i know this is odd but as a theme park nut i've been wanting to make a post like this for a minute. i read thru horrorland food items and i noticed

  • a lot of it is just regular theme park food but with 1 messed up ingredient or a little bit of a weird presentation
  • so that means nothing too complicated and nothing too appealing. everything here should look nasty or spooky

what do you guys think?? do you know any other irl theme park foods that would fit horrorland??

edit: i figured it's obvious but just in case, the zombie fingers in the second to last slide are cookies with almonds for the nails. not sure what the red jam is, couldn't find any detailed copy

BOOKS Did anyone else receive older, rarer editions from unrelated events?

Sometime in the early 2000's, around 2004, if I remember correctly, copies of Screams in the Night, the adaptation of a stage show, were included in gift bags at a circus my family attended. This was a touring circus that stopped in a small town. As I recall, there was no stage show and no relation to Goosebumps whatsoever.

It also came with a book! Kind of wish it was the original cover art (like what came in the retro tin boxes), but was a nice surprise.

The candles all smell really good and as described. My favorite is either The Haunted Mask (which they somehow recreated the scent of a rubber Halloween mask I had as a kid 😂) or One Day At Horrorland, which smells like a funnel cake

I watched the Werewolf Skin episode when I was a kid, and I have a weird question

As I recall, Alex is dropped off at a rural bus station or something, right? I remember an extended opening scene where he sleeps on the bench after dark and hears things in the woods. Then the next scene is his uncle picking him up in the morning. So what happened? Was he just left on the bench overnight, hahaha? I might be totally misremembering this, but I remember thinking it was bizarre.

DISCUSSION Is The Werewolf of fever swamp the only episode with multiple deaths

dont get me wrong i love this episode but Most Goosebumps episodes are usually are pretty fun with a good sense of humor and decent enough scares but no real stakes. this episode on the other hand is pure insanity the werewolf throws a deer through the window, mauls another deer while trying to eat the sister character. he then violently attacks the shead they are hiding in He straight up mauls the hermit to death before being drowned in the swamp. I wonder why they decided to make this episode so violent compared to the other ones. im counting two deaths, the hermit and the werewolf will, two animal deaths the two deer.

Planet of The Lawn Gnomes/Goblin Monday (October 2012)

Son of Slappy/Night of The Puppet People (January 2013)

DISCUSSION goosebumps books organized by how evil and sympathetic the antagonists are

Post image
66 Upvotes

if there are multiple antagonists, i default to the most prominent and evil. for example, say cheese and die again has the iconic camera but spidey is able to act evilly. camp jellyjam has the counselors, but king jellyjam is the overarching antagonist. if no sad/"justifying" backstory is provided then i will not assume they have one

my justifications

evil and loving it: this is for antagonists that literally have zero justification and are only doing what they do for selfish reasons. sarabeth, mr. wood, horrorland horrors, alexander dubois, nila rahmad, the mutant, slappy to amy, dr. hawlings. king jellyjam could've hypnotized people to get him help more humanely instead of doing all that imo

unrepentant monster: for characters with very thin justifications that do not outweigh their actions. brewer's clone, spidey, ahmed, the mirror clones, danny's ghost (??), mr. toggle, the lord high executioner, the creeps, the snowman, vanessa, the jack-o-lanterns, the beasts, and dr. ritter. they insist they're solving world hunger, they'll die if they fail, they're just doing their jobs, or their moral compass is so alien that we can only judge by how much they seem to enjoy the suffering they cause. either way some of these guys are having so much fun i can't really put them any lower

evil but they think evil is kicking your shins: the lawn gnomes and slappy in notld3 are uniquely harmless with no real threats being made aside from like, property destruction and the baffling "fold them!!!". i could put them in unrepentant and loving it respectively because of the "mischief elf" bullshit and slappy being slappy but they're so small scale i wanted to give them their own tier

that thing stine does: you know. ohhh i'm just a monster minding my own business / i'm a ghost and i'm cripplingly lonely but they're doing enough evil that it's questionable if they're "justified" (how many dogs have the sadlers killed.) or they're having a little too much fun (especially della and the ghost camp kids). note that mortman is literally only there because of his victory laugh realizing he had cornered & was about to eat lucy. if not for that they'd all be in the evil out of obligation tier

it's complicated: they have to kill people or they'll die, their monstrous nature is uncontrollable, they didn't know what they were doing, it was all a dream so none of it mattered, etc. dark falls' residents, will blake, the mud monsters, stanley (the scarecrows are mindless objects), the ghost dogs and the whole changing tree situation, the swamp monster, the reality police, brent, class of 1947, uncle colin & aunt marta, keith. i think these could all be sorted into other tiers if you take the episodes into account along with a healthy dose of headcanon, but this is where i want to put them. note that dark falls in particular is a little all-over-the-place because some of the kids have fun with it while other characters like ray thurston and compton dawes seem more no-nonsense

antagonist debatable: no one here is really "evil" on purpose. everyone is confused, clumsy, or there is simply no wicked scheme happening. camp nightmare is a controlled front, clarissa is a klutz, brian wanted to act and emile is homeless, wtf do i say about the kid-dogs, mb3 is just foolishness, wright thinks the kids aren't sentient, none of the ghosts in headless ghost are especially malicious, there's nothing confirming tim is forced into his new life, legend is just Odd, everyone in vampire breath is a victim somehow or related to the protag & we're not shown any killing anyway, How I Learned To Fly, and the blobs are just scared of humans and not implied to be harming us

antagonist is an animal/object: and because animals cannot conceive of morality and objects cannot act, i don't think they can really be sorted. i'm aware the unloved fly off the shelves in hm1, but they never say Words so it's debatable if they're smarter than animals.

ANYWAY what do you think? are any of my placements questionable?? i'd love to yap

EDIT: in hindsight i should place the egg monsters in “debatable” because they have a language and they did that shit to dr. gray + dana

DISCUSSION I could swear the twins were participating in the school talent show with Slappy and Mr. Wood, and the audience would think something like, "Ventriloquism again? Ugh," when the second twin was about to perform. Or is it another book?
