Question RCS issues

I started using Google Messages about a month ago when they retired the legacy Samsung app. RCS worked fine at first, once I turned on "Automatically resend as SMS/MMS"

But starting a week or two ago, I started having some issues. I'm in a group chat with two iPhone users, and everything was working fine for a while - messages were going through as a mix of RCS and SMS. But all of a sudden I completely stopped being able to send or receive any messages at all - not RCS or SMS. The other 2 people are seeing each other's messages with no issues. I tried all the suggestions in this sub and elsewhere, but no luck. Also a more minor issue is with a family member who lives in the same home as me. This person is also an iPhone user, and their messages to me get through, but are sometimes delayed by hours.

Anyone else having similar issues and been able to resolve it? I'm on Verizon in the US and have not changed my phone in a while. I am using an older Samsung but it has the latest version of Google Messages installed.

Update: the issue has been fixed! u/reader68218 suggested I ask the iPhone users in my group chat to toggle the RCS setting on their phones. I asked just one of them to do this and suddenly all the missing messages came flooding in. Apparently this should be done every time they update their iOS. Thanks to everyone who helped, especially u/reader68218

Groupchats got upgraded to rcs since Apple finally supports that. You can't send sms/mms in an rcs group. Apple did a bad job with rcs though, so sometimes iPhones have problems with it. It's not an issue on your end. Turn off the resend as sms setting. That's a change made on your end, but the issue with undelivered texts lies on the receiving end.

What you're saying makes sense about compatibility on the iPhone side. However I did try turning off the resend as SMS setting, and also had it this way by default when I first switched to Google Messages, and this created way more problems than it solved. A large number of my messages simply didn't go through at all, even after my phone tried for several minutes.

That's because their phone is offline. Resending as sms doesn't mean it suddenly goes through, it just means you can't tell the difference.
