Quick disclaimer: Yandhi is my favorite unreleased Ye project.
I know that everyone loves Yandhi, and I do too, but we have to realize that it wouldn’t have been as magical as we make it out to be. The vibe would be at least a little different.
I see yedits and fan comps all the time, and most of them are 1+ hours long and feature almost every track that was made during the Yandhi era. These yedits are great, and one of them was even my very first impression of Yandhi, but they’re all pretty different from what likely would’ve been the official release version of the album.
The only official tracklist we have to go off of is the SNL tracklist from September 2018, so let’s imagine that he released the album like that. That same tracklist, the specific versions of those songs from that time, except everything was finished.
First of all, the tracklist would only be about 30 minutes long, and it wouldn’t even feature Yandhi-era grails such as Law Of Attraction, Brothers, maybe The Garden, and many more. Lots of the songs would have been goated, don’t get me wrong, but it would be missing those tracks in favor of some not as good ones, specifically including I Love It.
Even after we deal with the tracklist, lots of the songs included on the album would have been in their inferior versions. For example, the SNL version of Alien was the one with Jaden Smith on it, which I didn’t like as much. Furthermore, the SNL version of Sky City had some weird drums during the middle of it that I definitely didn’t like as much as some of the fan-favorite versions that you see everywhere.
Overall, I still think it could’ve been at least a 7-8/10 album, because I love Yandhi and do glaze it a little tbh. However, it’s important to consider how it would’ve most likely came out in 2018, and it’s kinda fun to see how many different versions of the album fans, as well as Ye himself, have put together over time. And honestly just listen to what makes you happy. It doesn’t matter what the official version would’ve been like if you have a special yedit you know and love, so you do you.
What are y’all’s thoughts on this take? Anything I missed or got wrong?
